Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Acquitted in Wrestlers’ Sexual Harassment Case, Delhi Court Clears Former WFI Chief

The verdict was delivered by the Rouse Avenue Court, bringing an end to a legal case that followed nationwide protests by leading Indian wrestlers.

Court Acquits Both Accused

The court announced its decision on 3 August after reserving the verdict on 2 July, when final arguments from both sides had concluded.

The case was based on allegations made by six women wrestlers, who accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment during his tenure as president of the Wrestling Federation of India.

Brij Bhushan Reacts to the Verdict

Speaking to reporters after the judgment, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh welcomed the court’s decision.

“The day the allegations were made against me, I said that if they were proved, I would willingly hang myself. Today the court has acquitted me and used the term ‘honourably acquitted’. What’s done is done,” he said.

He maintained that he had consistently denied the allegations throughout the legal proceedings.

Supporters Celebrate Outside His Residence

Following the verdict, supporters gathered outside Brij Bhushan Singh’s residence in Delhi.

They celebrated by:

• Bursting crackers
• Showering flower petals
• Raising slogans in his support

WFI President Sanjay Singh, a close associate of Brij Bhushan, said supporters were pleased with the court’s decision.

“Everyone is in a great mood and really happy,” he said.

Background of the Case

The case began after several women wrestlers staged a high-profile protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding action over allegations of sexual harassment against the former WFI chief.

Following the protests, the Delhi Police registered an FIR and launched an investigation.

After completing the inquiry, police submitted a 1,500-page charge sheet on 15 June 2023, detailing the allegations and evidence collected during the investigation.

The trial continued for more than two years before the court delivered its final judgment.

Previous Court Proceedings

In May 2024, the court had ordered the framing of a criminal intimidation charge against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in one complaint.

However, he was discharged in another complaint filed by one of the six women wrestlers.

The latest judgment acquits both Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar in the main case.

Political Impact

The allegations also had political consequences.

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP did not nominate Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to contest from Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh.

Instead, the party gave the ticket to his son, Karan Bhushan Singh, who went on to win the parliamentary seat.
