Farooq Abdullah Blames BJP for Jammu & Kashmir Situation, Sparking Fresh Political Row

Farooq Abdullah said the Centre’s policies, particularly after the 2019 abrogation of Article 370, have not delivered lasting peace or political stability in the region.

The BJP strongly rejected the allegations, saying that the challenges facing Jammu and Kashmir are the result of decades of rule by regional political parties, including the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

JKNC Criticises Centre’s Policies

According to Farooq Abdullah, the removal of Article 370 and the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories reduced the region’s constitutional powers and created political dissatisfaction among many residents.

He also questioned claims that the security situation has returned completely to normal, pointing to continued security incidents and militant attacks in some areas.

The National Conference leader again called for the early restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and greater democratic powers for the elected government.

BJP Rejects the Allegations

The BJP dismissed Abdullah’s remarks and defended the Centre’s policies.

Party leaders said that the problems in Jammu and Kashmir developed over many years under regional governments led by political families, including the Abdullahs and the Muftis.

The BJP also highlighted several developments since the constitutional changes in 2019, including:

• A significant decline in organised stone-pelting incidents.
• Increased investment in infrastructure projects.
• Growth in tourism across Jammu and Kashmir.
• Strengthening of grassroots democratic institutions through local body elections.

BJP leaders also referred to the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, arguing that previous regional governments failed to protect minority communities during that period.

Statehood Remains a Key Political Issue

The exchange between the National Conference and the BJP reflects the continuing political debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s future.

Major issues remain under discussion, including:

• Restoration of full statehood.
• Political representation and governance.
• Security and counter-terrorism measures.
• Economic development and employment opportunities.

These topics continue to shape political discussions following the constitutional changes introduced in August 2019 and the subsequent Assembly elections.

The latest remarks by Farooq Abdullah have once again brought the debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s governance into focus.
