PDP Alleges People’s Conference Used Names of Central Agencies to Intimidate Leaders, Seeks Amit Shah’s Intervention
SRINAGAR: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday accused the leadership of the People’s Conference (PC) of allegedly intimidating political opponents by claiming links with central investigative agencies. The allegations were made during a press conference addressed by Iltija Mufti, Waheed Ur Rehman Parra, and former MLC Yasir Reshi.
Iltija Mufti Seeks Clarification from Amit Shah
Speaking to reporters, Iltija Mufti alleged that some People’s Conference leaders had created “an atmosphere of fear” in Jammu and Kashmir since the constitutional changes of August 5, 2019.
She claimed that they allegedly invoked the names of agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED), National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while threatening PDP leaders.
Mufti urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to clarify whether such claims had any official basis.
“If this is not happening under your directions, then please rein in such people,” she said.
Allegations of Political Intimidation
Mufti alleged that PDP workers, journalists and businessmen had faced intimidation and pressure.
She maintained that political differences should be settled through democratic means rather than through alleged misuse of investigative agencies.
“If you want to fight us, fight us through dialogue and the ballot. Don’t fight us through the ED or the NIA,” she said.
She further argued that Jammu and Kashmir’s political debate should remain focused on issues such as governance, Article 370 and political prisoners.
Parra Raises Post-2019 Political Concerns
PDP legislator Waheed Ur Rehman Parra echoed the allegations, saying political discussion had shifted away from what he described as Jammu and Kashmir’s key issues.
Parra referred to his own detention by the NIA, stating that he had never engaged in activities against India’s interests.
He also claimed the PDP faced a political crackdown after the abrogation of Article 370, alleging that many party leaders were removed from active politics.
Yasir Reshi Alleges Years of Pressure
Former MLC Yasir Reshi alleged that he had faced repeated pressure and raids after joining politics despite having no criminal or militant background.
He claimed that a People’s Conference functionary had informed him that officials from agencies including the NIA, ED, Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) were discussing action against him.
Reshi said that if such claims were false, the matter should be investigated and appropriate action taken.
PDP Calls for Democratic Political Competition
The PDP leaders reiterated that political competition should be conducted through elections and public debate rather than alleged intimidation.
They maintained that democratic institutions should remain independent and not become part of political rivalries.
