Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Masood Itoo gave the assurance during a meeting with a delegation of medical interns representing various government medical colleges in J&K.
According to an official record note issued by the Minister’s Personal Section, the delegation met Sakeena Itoo to discuss the revision of the existing stipend structure. The delegation included representatives from different medical colleges of Jammu and Kashmir, along with the Principal of Government Medical College, Srinagar, and the Deputy Director Planning, representing the Director Health Services, Kashmir.
During the meeting, the interns explained their concerns about the current stipend and sought a suitable increase, pointing to the nature of their duties, workload and responsibilities in the healthcare system.
The Minister heard their concerns and acknowledged that the matter deserved due consideration. She also assured the delegation that the government was aware of the issues faced by medical interns and was sensitive to their concerns.
Sakeena Itoo informed the delegation that the stipend issue was already under consideration by the government. She said a committee had been formed to examine the matter in detail and recommend an appropriate course of action.
The Minister said the formation of the committee showed the government’s seriousness in addressing the demand and reaching a considered decision.
The official note refers to the Stipend Enhancement Committee, constituted under Government Order No. 538-JK(HME) of 2023 dated June 27, 2023.
Following the government’s assurance that the matter would be resolved within 30 days, medical interns agreed to call off their strike.
