Party spokesperson Talat Majid said the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway often faces closures during the harvest season due to landslides and bad weather, causing major losses to apple farmers.
Highway Disruptions Cause Heavy Losses
Majid said that last year the highway remained closed for more than 20 days after landslides damaged sections of the road, leaving hundreds of apple-laden trucks stranded.
He noted that changing weather patterns linked to climate change continue to create uncertainty for growers. According to government estimates, the apple industry suffered losses exceeding ₹100 crore due to transport disruptions last year.
Cargo Trains Can Reduce Farmer Losses
The JDF leader also pointed to rising fuel costs caused by tensions in West Asia, saying higher transportation expenses are adding to farmers’ challenges.
He said additional cargo train services would provide a reliable and cost-effective way to transport apples from Kashmir to markets across India.
Railways Already Transporting Fruits
The Indian Railways began transporting Kashmiri fruit by cargo trains last year. In May 2025, a parcel van carrying 24 tonnes of cherries was transported from Katra to Mumbai.
This year, railways have continued running parcel trains for cherry transportation, while some cargo services are also carrying goods to Anantnag railway station in south Kashmir.
JDF Welcomes Amarnath Yatra
JDF General Secretary Sayar Ahmad Reshi welcomed devotees arriving for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.
He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have a long tradition of hospitality and brotherhood and called for a successful and peaceful yatra.
Reshi urged authorities and stakeholders to ensure proper arrangements for the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.
Party Demands Reservation Rationalisation
JDF President Kalimullah Lone also called on the Jammu and Kashmir government to review and rationalise the reservation policy.
He claimed that many open merit candidates face difficulties in securing jobs and admissions despite being highly qualified.
Lone said the party would launch a peaceful campaign supporting demands for reservation rationalisation and would take awareness programmes to educational institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.
Growing Political Presence
The JDF was formed after the 2024 Assembly elections by former members associated with the banned Jamaat-e-Islami. The party received recognition from the Election Commission of India earlier this year and has been raising issues related to farmers, youth and public welfare.
