Speaking during a BJP protest in Jammu, Sharma said thousands of party workers, MPs, legislators and members of the public had taken to the streets to express their anger against the government.
He said the National Conference came to power after making several promises to voters following the Assembly elections, which were held after a long gap. However, he alleged that the government was now focusing heavily on the restoration of statehood instead of addressing issues affecting ordinary people.
BJP Says Government Using Statehood Issue to Divert Attention
Sharma alleged that the government was raising the statehood issue to divert attention from what he described as failures in governance.
He claimed that the administration had failed to meet public expectations and said people would eventually hold the ruling party accountable.
Referring to recent by-elections in Nagrota and Budgam, Sharma claimed that the results showed growing public dissatisfaction with the National Conference.
He also criticised the Congress, which is part of the ruling alliance in Jammu and Kashmir, making allegations about the party’s position on national symbols.
Sharma said the BJP wanted the government to function effectively and would continue to play the role of a constructive opposition.
BJP Warns of Wider Protests
Sharma warned that the BJP would expand its agitation if the government failed to address public concerns.
He said future protests could be organised at the district, town and local levels, taking the party’s campaign directly to communities across Jammu and Kashmir.
Jugal Kishore Sharma Raises Civic Issues
BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma accused the National Conference-led government of failing to address basic problems faced by the public.
He alleged that people continued to face problems related to roads, electricity and drinking water, despite repeated assurances from the government.
The BJP leader claimed that the administration had lost public confidence and demanded that the government take responsibility for what he described as its failures.
Opposition Leader Alleges Corruption
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma launched a strong attack on the government, alleging corruption, administrative failures and poor governance.
He said the BJP had initially intended to function as a constructive opposition but claimed that the government’s alleged failures had forced the party to take its campaign to the streets.
BJP Leaders Raise Jammu Region Concerns
BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma said the party would hold the government accountable both inside and outside the Assembly.
He also alleged that the people of the Jammu region were facing discrimination under the present administration.
Another BJP MLA, Vikram Randhawa, criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, alleging that the government was more focused on protocol and political posturing than resolving issues affecting the public.
BJP Mahila Morcha Raises Youth and Women’s Issues
BJP Mahila Morcha president Neha Mahajan raised concerns over employment opportunities for young people and the government’s efforts to tackle unemployment.
She also questioned the administration over commitments made to women during the election campaign.
The BJP leaders further argued that the Centre had already indicated that statehood would be restored at an appropriate time. They questioned the National Conference-led government over what they described as its failure to fulfil promises made to voters.
The BJP said it would continue to raise public issues through democratic means and warned that its agitation would intensify if the government failed to respond to the concerns raised by the opposition.
