Shaheen and Nafisa Khan Allege Assault at Saket Police Station; Delhi Police Deny Charges

New Delhi: Two women journalists, Shaheen and Nafisa Khan, associated with digital news platform 4PM News Network, have alleged that they were detained and assaulted by Delhi Police while covering an event in South Delhi’s Saket on September 3. The journalists said they were stopped while trying to question the Chief Minister and were later taken to Saket Police Station, where they alleged that police personnel assaulted them.

Videos shared by 4PM News Network showed the women displaying injury marks on their arms and legs. In one video, one of the journalists appeared unable to walk and was helped out of the police station. The allegations, including claims of assault inside the station, have been widely reported, although they have not been independently verified.

Journalists Allege Religious Targeting

Shaheen Khan also alleged that the police asked about their community and that the alleged assault intensified after personnel learnt that the two women were Muslims.

The journalists subsequently went to AIIMS for medical examination and documentation of their injuries, according to reports.

Delhi Police Reject Allegations

Delhi Police has strongly denied the allegations, calling them “factually incorrect”, “misleading” and “baseless”.

According to DCP (South) Anant Mittal, the women had parked their scooter on a designated VVIP movement route and allegedly refused repeated instructions from security personnel to move it. Police also alleged that they created a disturbance and had an altercation with personnel deployed at the spot.

Police further alleged that the women were not carrying press identity cards and that one of them manhandled a pregnant police officer. The police said the journalists were taken to the station only for further inquiry and were free to leave within a short time.

The police specifically denied that the women were assaulted for asking questions to the Chief Minister.

Press Bodies, Political Leaders Demand Probe

The allegations have sparked reactions from journalist organisations and political parties. Several press bodies have demanded an independent investigation into the incident and action against any officials found responsible. Opposition leaders and supporters have also staged protests and sit-ins outside the Saket police station, calling for accountability.

The incident has renewed debate over the treatment of journalists while covering political and public events, with the two sides presenting sharply different accounts of what happened.

4PM News Network Faced Blocking Order in 2025

The incident also comes against the background of 4PM News Network’s earlier dispute with the Centre. In April 2025, the government ordered the blocking of its YouTube channel citing national security and public order. The Editors Guild of India criticised the move, and the matter reached the Supreme Court. The Union government later withdrew the blocking order in May 2025 while the wider legal challenge continued.
