Director of the Meteorological Centre, Mukhtar Ahmad, said the recent rise in temperatures was already predicted by the department.
“As expected, temperatures started increasing from June 27. For the past three to four days, the Kashmir Valley has been experiencing intense heat,” he said.
Ahmad said heatwave conditions were recorded on Sunday at a few weather stations, including Srinagar, Qazigund and Kukernag.
He said hot weather is expected to continue until Tuesday afternoon, after which some districts may receive brief spells of rain, bringing temporary relief from the heat.
More Rain Expected From Tuesday Night
The MeT Director said another spell of rainfall is likely late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
He said the Jammu division is expected to receive the heaviest rainfall, with some areas likely to experience intense showers. In the Kashmir Valley, light to moderate rain is expected in several districts, while a few places could witness heavier showers.
Wet Spell Likely Until July 6
According to the Meteorological Department, intermittent rainfall is expected from July 2 to July 6. Showers are most likely during the late-night, early-morning, late-afternoon and evening hours.
Ahmad said heavy rainfall is expected over the plains of Jammu and the adjoining hilly areas of the Pir Panjal range, including Reasi and Udhampur districts. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also likely in the Chenab Valley.
Heatwave Expected to Ease
The expected rainfall is likely to bring significant relief from the ongoing heatwave across the Union Territory.
Ahmad said the weather will remain generally cloudy during the coming days, although humidity levels are expected to increase.
He also noted that nights have remained unusually warm, with minimum temperatures around 25°C in Central Kashmir, including Srinagar and nearby areas.
However, he said daytime temperatures are expected to fall over the next few days, making weather conditions more comfortable, while night temperatures may also improve gradually
