Police in central Kashmir’s Budgam have registered a criminal case against a man accused of running a fake WhatsApp account in the name of the district’s Superintendent of Police (SSP).

Accused Identified by Police
Police identified the accused as Sameer Ali Bhat, son of Ghulam Muhammad Bhat and a resident of Pallar Budgam.
Officials said reliable information was received that he was sharing screenshots of chats from a fake WhatsApp account operating under the name of SSP Budgam.
Used Fake Account for Influence
During verification, police found that the accused was already involved in multiple FIRs.
Officials said he allegedly used mobile number +91-9622126997 to operate the fake account and shared conversations to present himself as someone close to the SSP in order to gain undue influence.
FIR Registered Under Law
Acting quickly, Budgam Police registered FIR No. 90/2026.
The case has been filed under Section 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 66-C of the Information Technology Act.
Police Warn Public to Stay Alert
Budgam Police urged the public to remain careful and not fall for impersonation attempts.Citizens have been advised to use only officially published contact numbers available on the police department website when contacting authorities.Police also asked people to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station so timely legal action can be taken.
