The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted one-week interim bail to jailed Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid (Er Rashid) on humanitarian grounds, allowing him to visit his critically ill father.

The High Court allowed Rashid to be released for seven days. He will remain either at the hospital or his father’s residence under the supervision of at least two police officials.
Background of the Case
Rashid’s father has been hospitalised and is reportedly in critical condition, with reports earlier stating he was put on ventilator support. Rashid had sought interim bail to meet his ailing father, describing it as a last opportunity to see him.
His brother and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) legislator, Sheikh Khursheed, had earlier termed the lower court’s rejection of bail as “nothing short of inhuman.”
Political Reactions
The decision has been widely welcomed by several political parties and leaders in Jammu and Kashmir:
- Rashid’s own party, Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), hailed the High Court order as “humanitarian justice.”
- Leaders from the Awami National Conference also welcomed the decision, calling it a “humane and compassionate” move.
- Several other J&K-based parties had earlier rallied behind Rashid, urging authorities to grant him temporary release on humanitarian grounds.
Notably, Rashid had earlier been granted custody parole to attend the Parliament’s Budget session this year. He won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Baramulla constituency as an independent candidate, defeating National Conference leader Omar Abdullah with a significant margin.
Current Status
Engineer Rashid is facing trial in a National Investigation Agency (NIA) case. His regular bail plea is also pending before the Delhi High Court.
The one-week interim bail is strictly for meeting his ailing father and is subject to conditions imposed by the court, including police escort.
This development comes amid continued political support for Rashid across party lines in the Kashmir Valley on humanitarian grounds.
