Cloudburst Devastates Pahalgam Area: Flash Floods Cut Off Key Roads, Hotels Flooded Across Kashmir
Srinagar: A series of intense cloudbursts and torrential rainfall triggered devastating flash floods across South and Central Kashmir, leaving widespread destruction in their wake. The famous tourist destination of Pahalgam in Anantnag district suffered the worst damage as floodwaters washed away roads, inundated hotels, disrupted essential services and cut off major transport links.
Emergency teams from multiple departments are continuing rescue, relief and restoration operations as authorities work to restore connectivity and public services.
Cloudburst in Upper Catchments Triggered the Disaster
The disaster began after a powerful cloudburst struck the upper forest areas of Awoora and Dehwathu above Pahalgam.
Within minutes, huge volumes of water mixed with mud, boulders and uprooted trees rushed through Nallah Awoora, Overa Nallah and Wardbal Nallah before entering the Lidder River.
The sudden surge pushed the river above danger levels, causing floodwaters to spill into nearby villages, tourist areas and commercial establishments.
Major Roads Washed Away
The flash floods severely damaged key transport routes connecting Pahalgam with other parts of Kashmir.
Infrastructure Damage
- A nearly 100-metre stretch of the Bijbehara–Langanbal Road was completely washed away near Nallah Awoora.
- The Langnai Bridge at Batkoot suffered foundation damage, forcing authorities to suspend traffic on the Aishmuqam–Pahalgam Road.
- Mudslides, fallen trees and boulders blocked several alternative roads, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded and cutting off nearby villages.
Hotels and Tourist Facilities Flooded
The overflowing streams caused extensive damage to hotels, guest houses and tourist infrastructure along the banks of the Lidder River.
Hospitality Sector Affected
- More than 20 hotels, guest houses and private huts were flooded.
- Floodwater entered ground floors, damaging rooms, restaurants and reception areas.
- Several vehicles parked outside hotels were swept away or buried under mud and debris.
- Hotel staff and local residents helped evacuate tourists through emergency exits during the night.
The Nunwan Base Camp, an important facility for the annual Amarnath Yatra, also suffered damage after floodwaters breached its rear boundary wall, allowing mud and water to enter accommodation areas.

Relief Package

The assistance will be provided through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in addition to government disaster relief.
