Will Jailed MP Engineer Rashid Return to Parliament?

MP Engineer Rashid

The Awami Ittehaad Party (AIP) has formally approached the Patiala House Court in New Delhi, seeking permission for its incarcerated president and Member of Parliament, Engineer Rashid, to participate in the upcoming Lok Sabha session scheduled to begin on July 21.

In a statement to Kashmir News Observer (KNO), AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi confirmed that the application was submitted today by Advocate Vikhyat Oberoi, who is representing Engineer Rashid in legal matters. The plea has been listed for hearing on July 15.

“Engineer Rashid is the elected representative of Baramulla. Preventing him from attending Parliament not only silences his voice but also robs his constituents of representation. Attending Parliament is not a favour—it’s his constitutional right and duty,” Inam Un Nabi said.

He added that the party remains hopeful that the judiciary will honour the principles of democracy and allow the MP to fulfill his responsibilities in the House.

Sajad Lone Slams Security Cuts After Alliance Launch, Cites Cross-Border Threats and Political Targeting

Sajad Lone

Peoples Conference President and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone, on Sunday expressed concern over what he described as the sudden and politically suggestive withdrawal of security cover from key leaders associated with the newly-formed People’s Alliance for Change.

Lone noted that in the aftermath of the alliance’s formation, statements of criticism had begun surfacing from various quarters, including across the Line of Control.

He mentioned that the first such statement came from Ghulam Mohammad Safi, a veteran Hurriyat figure, and Naseebuddin, an affiliate of Jamaat-e-Islami—both based across the border. Similar responses followed from Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, a former senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I had personally met Bhat Sahib along with my younger brother Imran just a few days ago. I respect him deeply as a courageous man. But the public statement he made was contrary to what he told us in person,” Lone said.

He added that even more concerning was a threat received from a militant outfit in Pakistan, suggesting that the formation of the alliance had unsettled several actors both within and outside Jammu and Kashmir.

However, Lone’s strongest criticism was directed at the administration for what he called a “deliberate withdrawal” of security cover from senior politicians associated with the alliance. He revealed that former minister and senior political figure Hakeem Yaseen had his security scaled down by 80 percent.

“Hakeem Sahib survived a deadly attack in the 1990s. He was shot, and only God knows how he survived. That incident alone stands as proof that the one who protects is greater than the one who seeks to kill,” he said.

He also informed that the security of Sheikh Imran, a young leader of party, had also been reduced by a similar percentage.

“We are not here to beg for security. Nor are we here to complain. I just want to place it in the public domain that even security is now being politicised,” Lone told reporters.

He noted that although earlier governments too had shown bias—giving more security to ruling party members and less to the opposition—this is the first time such a swift and sharp cut had been observed. “This happened just three days after the alliance was announced. It is difficult not to connect the dots.”

Lone recalled the assassination of his father, late Abdul Gani Lone, as an example of how political leaders had long been left vulnerable for ideological reasons. “When my father was martyred in Eidgah, the then government had prior information that he might be attacked. But they decided not to act, thinking: ‘He’s a separatist—let him die.’ And they let him be killed,” he said.

Despite the threats and the apparent pressure, Lone reiterated the alliance’s commitment and unity.

“We met this morning—all three constituents of the alliance—and resolved to stay firm. The kind of reaction we are getting only confirms that we are on the right path,” he said.

Taking aim at a prominent regional party—without naming it—Lone accused its leadership of arrogance and political insecurity. “There’s a party in Kashmir whose entire foundation is built on the legacy of another organisation. They ruled for two decades, yet they still lack the confidence of having their own vote bank. They are now shocked that the people they once used for votes are daring to contest elections themselves and sit with them in the Assembly.”

Lone concluded the press interaction by taking aim at the same local political party: “On one hand, they talk of dialogue with Pakistan, while on the other, we all know who is pulling the trigger from behind the scenes. We know which ‘uncle’ is involved. No matter what they do, we will move forward—together and with conviction, Insha’Allah.”

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Announces Housing Scheme for 5 Lakh People in Jammu and Kashmir

Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Meta Description: Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announces government plans to provide housing for 5 lakh people in J&K under a new scheme.

Rewritten News in UK English:

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Thursday, revealed that the central government has identified approximately five lakh people in Jammu and Kashmir who lack permanent homes. Efforts are underway to provide them with housing under a government scheme.

Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, the minister, according to news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO), stated that the Prime Minister has decided to offer permanent shelter to those still without homes. “A survey has been carried out to identify the beneficiaries, and once the verification process is complete, the housing allotment will begin. Verification is crucial to ensure no ineligible individuals are included,” Chouhan said.

He further emphasised that work would begin to ensure every eligible individual in the region receives permanent housing. The minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) to tackle rural poverty, especially among women. “Through self-help groups, the government aims to raise the annual income of women to over Rs 1 lakh under the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ scheme.”

Chouhan also pointed out that the scheme is making significant progress in Jammu and Kashmir, with many women already achieving Lakhpati status. Additionally, he introduced a new category, “Millennial Didi,” for women whose annual income has reached Rs 10 lakh.

A booklet featuring the success stories of such women was also released during the event.

On the topic of employment, Chouhan acknowledged some challenges faced by rural job schemes like MGNREGA, but assured that steps were being taken to resolve these issues. He mentioned that targets had been set for workers under MGNREGA this year, with implementation already underway in the region.

“The government is also focusing on skilled youth for employment opportunities, and new educational initiatives will be introduced. Efforts are also being made to connect more farmers to the Kisan Credit Card scheme,” he added.

Chouhan noted that various issues were discussed during his visit, and steps are being taken to enhance the implementation of central schemes. “As per the Prime Minister’s directive, we are committed to ensuring the full development of Jammu and Kashmir,” he concluded—(KNO).

Farooq Abdullah Slams Centre Over J&K Statehood Delay, Warns Sunni Nations on West Asia Crisis

Farooq Abdullah Speaking With media on India Pakistan War

National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Monday launched a scathing attack on the central government over the delay in restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, calling it “a right, not a favour.”

Speaking at a party event in Srinagar, Abdullah said, “Statehood is the right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It is not a dole to be handed out at someone’s whim.”

He also expressed concern over what he termed as “ lies” being circulated by sections of the media on Statehood.

Abdullah also announced the formation of a Human Rights Wing of the party within the National Conference to .

The wing will be chaired by Retired Justice Hasnain Masoodi and will have two more members.

In a sharp geopolitical remark, Abdullah also weighed in on the ongoing tensions in West Asia, cautioning Sunni-majority nations about their current alignment with Western powers.

“Sunni countries are also against Iran today. But they must remember—Israel and America will come for them too, for their resources, for their gas. This is not about religion, this is about exploitation,” he warned. (KNS)

AAP’s Mehraj Malik Withdraws Support from NC-Led J&K Government, Cites Public Interest

AAP’s Mehraj Malik

In a significant development, Mehraj Malik, the firebrand MLA from Doda and the sole MLA of the Aam Aadmi Party in J&K on Saturday announced withdrawal of support to NC-led government.

The firebrand legislator took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce his withdrawal of support from the ruling National Conference-led coalition.

“I, Mehraj Malik, MLA from Doda, hereby withdraw my support to NC in the government coalition. This decision has been taken in the best interest of my people of Jammu and Kashmir, whose trust and welfare will always be my top priority,” the legislator posted, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

While Malik’s exit does not threaten the government’s majority—the ruling coalition still has backing of 52 MLAs, well above the required number.

However, the real challenge for the government now lies in managing him on floor of the House.

In his fiery speeches in the last assembly session, he repeatedly accused the BJP and PDP of wrecking the state. He was assaulted by BJP MLAs and PDP workers in the House lobby, after he made disparaging remarks against the saffron party and late PDP founder Mufti Mohammed Sayeed—(KNO)

Mian Altaf, Farooq Abdullah Highlight Communal Harmony at Urs and Kheer Bhawani Celebrations in Kashmir

Mian Altaf

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) MP Mian Altaf Ahmad Larvi on Sunday paid tributes at the 129th Urs of Mian Nizam-u-Din Kiyanvi (RA) and highlighted the saint’s message of unity and spiritual wisdom.

Devotees from various parts of the country gathered at Baba Nagri, Wangat Kangan to offer prayers at the revered shrine of Mian Nizam-u-Din Kiyanvi (RA) during the 129th Urs.
The atmosphere was filled with spiritual devotion as people paid their respects and sought blessings. Many devotees expressed deep gratitude for being able to attend the annual event, calling it a spiritually uplifting experience that strengthens their faith and connection to the Sufi saint’s teachings.
On Tuesday, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah welcomed the celebration of both the Kheer Bhawani Mela and the Urs of Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, calling it a symbol of communal harmony in Kashmir. He stressed the importance of unity for national progress.
Speaking to ANI, Farooq Abdullah said, “It is a matter of joy that the mela of Kheer Bhawani and Urs of Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamdani are being celebrated today. There has always been brotherhood in the valley. We want to see this brotherhood across the country. If we stay united, we will progress.”
The Kheer Bhawani Mela is an important annual religious festival for the Kashmiri Pandit community. It is held at the Kheer Bhawani Temple in Tulla Mulla village of Ganderbal district. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi, a form of Goddess Durga, and is considered one of the holiest sites for Kashmiri Hindus.
Abdullah also appealed to devotees to visit the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, expressing concern over the drop in pilgrim numbers following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
“We should go to Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra and appeal to the people to visit there. There has been a decrease in the number of devotees to Mata Vaishno Devi. People are scared after the tragedy of war that took place recently. The impact of the Pahalgam incident was seen throughout the country,” Abdullah told ANI. (ANI)

Omar Abdullah Renews Statehood Demand Amid Rail Milestone

Omar Abdullah Renews Statehood

In a historic moment for India’s infrastructure and national unity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the Chenab Railway Bridge, the highest railway arch bridge in the world, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. These marvels, part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, now directly connect Kashmir with the rest of the country by rail for the first time.

While the day celebrated engineering achievement and regional integration, it also saw Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reiterate the long-standing demand for the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory. Speaking during the inauguration of the Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, Abdullah expressed hope that it would be Prime Minister Modi himself who restores J&K’s statehood.

“Statehood Will Return, PM Modi Will Do It”: Omar Abdullah

Addressing the gathering, CM Omar Abdullah reflected on his personal association with major railway milestones in Jammu and Kashmir over the years. He fondly recalled the opening of the Anantnag rail station, the Banihal rail tunnel, and the 2014 inauguration of the Katra station during the first months of Modi’s first term.

Noting the passage of time and change in political roles, Abdullah said:

“In 2014, I was Chief Minister of a state. Today, I’m CM of a Union Territory. But I believe things will return to normal, and J&K will regain its statehood — under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.”

His remarks struck a chord amid ongoing political and public sentiment in J&K seeking the restoration of democratic state-level powers that were revoked in August 2019 when Article 370 was abrogated and the region’s statehood was dissolved.

Chenab and Anji Bridges: Engineering Wonders Unveiled

PM Modi’s visit marked the inauguration of two engineering feats:

  • Chenab Railway Bridge, rising 359 metres above the Chenab River in Reasi district, is now the world’s tallest railway bridge, towering even above the Eiffel Tower.
  • Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, links Katra and Reasi with a striking design, featuring a central pylon rising 193 metres.

These bridges faced extreme geographical, seismic, and weather challenges during construction, taking years of meticulous engineering to complete. Their successful commissioning is considered a testament to India’s technological strength and a bold move to include Kashmir in the national development mainstream.

USBRL Project: Rewriting Kashmir’s Connectivity

The USBRL project, spanning 272 kilometres at a cost of over ₹43,780 crore, includes:

  • 36 tunnels (totaling 119 km)
  • 943 bridges, including major ones like Chenab and Anji

Designed to withstand the region’s seismic sensitivity and harsh weather, this railway link offers all-weather, high-speed rail access to Kashmir. It is expected to accelerate economic activity, boost tourism, and provide logistical ease for defense and disaster response.

Vande Bharat Trains to Srinagar Launched

In another landmark event, PM Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra to Srinagar, significantly reducing the travel time from 6–7 hours by road to just 3 hours by rail.

The trains will:

  • Provide swift and comfortable travel for residents, tourists, and pilgrims
  • Traverse through both Chenab and Anji bridges
  • Symbolise a new era of high-speed connectivity in the region

During the ceremony, PM Modi interacted with school children onboard and railway staff, lauding their service and spirit.

“Kashmir to Kanyakumari” Becoming a Reality

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in his remarks, underlined how the dream of “Kashmir to Kanyakumari” rail connectivity was becoming reality.

“This bridge is not just a symbol of cement and iron, but a bridge of aspirations. PM Modi has fulfilled the dreams of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee,” said Sinha.

Conclusion

The twin inaugurations of the Chenab Railway Bridge and Anji Bridge, coupled with the flagging off of the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, mark a watershed moment in India’s infrastructure history and Kashmir’s integration journey.

As these symbolic and strategic links come to life, the spotlight also turns to the political aspirations of the region. With Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s statement rekindling hopes of statehood, all eyes are now on whether Prime Minister Modi’s legacy in Kashmir will include not just railways, but also a political restoration.

Salman Khurshid: PoK Must Return to India, Talks Only if Pakistan Ends Terror Support

Salman Khurshid

Salman Khurshid, Congress Leader and All-Party Delegation member, said that Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir must be given back to India.

Khurshid, in conversation with ANI, said that India has clearly stated that talks can happen only when Pakistan’s commitment to peace is clear, including talks on the Indus Water Treaty.

“There is a long standing unanimous resolution of parliament of India saying that the Pakistan occupied Kashmir must be re-vacated and given back to India and as you know that even in the assembly of Jammu and Kashmir, the seats that should have been in that area are kept vacant just for this reason that we have we have a long term commitment that the area is to come back to us. That’s one important factor,” he said.

Khurshid further said that attempts at making peace were negated by Pakistan, as it continued to attack India over the years.

“The second is that the government has reiterated this because you know, often questions are asked about will you talk, will you not talk, etc. We have expressed our distress that repeated attempts to talk and negotiate have been betrayed by Pakistan by a subsequent attack and several attacks that happened over the years,” he said.

Khurshid said that talks can happen only when Pakistan’s support for terrorism stops. Till then, the Indus Water Treaty will be in abeyance.

“But the government has said clearly that talks can happen only when the commitment of Pakistan to peace is clear that their support for terrorism is cogently shown to have stopped, and only then can there be a conversation with Pakistan. And that includes the Indus Water treaty being put in abeyance, that even on that issue, further talks can only happen once terrorism is given a complete stop and completely given up,” he said.

Khurshid said that India took kinetic steps to eliminate terrorist hubs in Pakistan, and their retaliation thereafter was met with India neutralizing the basis of their offensive.

“So it has been made clear that now we are taking several steps, steps that we took which are called kinetic steps of trying to eliminate the terrorist hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, which is the first thing we did. And then when there was a retaliation without escalating any further, we responded to that retaliation by neutralising the basis from which retaliation was coming,” he said.

Khurshid also said Indonesia was more supportive than they expected.

“I believe that Indonesia was far more supportive than we were even expecting, and we expressed our gratitude for that. They reiterated the condolence and the support messages that had already come from the president and have already come from the ASEAN headquarters, etc. and they took a lot of interest, reiterated the support that they’ve given,” he said.

Khurshid added that as of now, they had met the Secretary General of ASEAN, and it depends on the rest of the countries to take the matter up at their next meeting.

“The issue now is of course ASEAN at its next meeting can take up the matter further because we will only talk to the Secretary General, but as far as the government and the representatives of Indonesia are concerned, they were very, very supportive, including the political parties, some of whom we will continue to meet today,” he said.

Khurshid said that Indonesia was supportive of the Indian stance, and Pakistan’s false narratives on the attack were rejected.

“They were extremely supportive of India’s position. And the so-called narrative that was pushed by the chief of army staff in Pakistan, now a field marshal, that narrative was completely, completely negated and rejected in our conversations,” he said.

Khurshid is a part of an All-Party Delegation. The delegation, led by JD-U MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, includes Aparajita Sarangi (BJP), TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, Brij Lala (BJP), John Brittas (CPI-M), Pradan Baruah (BJP), Hemang Joshi (BJP), Salman Khurshid and Mohan Kumar.

The delegation is visiting many countries as part of India’s global outreach against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. The delegation has so far visited Japan, South Korea, and Singapore. (ANI)
