Congress Must Earn its Place as INDIA bloc leader, not take it for granted and Should Raise the Issue of Restoration of Statehood in Jammu and Kashmir: Omar Abdullah

Omar Abdullah

Acknowledging growing discontent among INDIA bloc partners with the Congress, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asked the party to justify its leadership role in the alliance instead of taking it for granted.

Abdullah, while recognising the Congress’ significant position as a pan-India party and the largest opposition in Parliament, emphasised that leadership “has to be earned” and cannot be taken for granted. He also suggested that the party should raise the issue of restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir.

Yet there is a sense of disquiet among some of the allies because they feel the Congress is “not doing enough to justify it or to earn it or to keep it. That’s something the Congress might wish to consider.”

Still, Abdullah praised former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, describing her as a leader of unparalleled stature within the opposition alliance. “When the INDIA bloc comes together, she plays an important leadership role,” he added.

Abdullah chose not to give a direct answer to a question about statements made by leaders like Sharad Pawar or Lalu Yadav favouring West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a better leader but highlighted the INDIA bloc’s lack of consistent engagement, warning that the coalition risks becoming a mere election-time convenience.

Abdullah stressed the need for sustained interactions beyond the electoral cycle, noting that the alliance’s current approach appears sporadic and ineffective.

“Our existence can’t just be about six months before Parliament elections. Our existence has to be something more than that. The last time we met was when the Lok Sabha results had only just come out. There has been no formal or informal sort of work that has been done for the INDIA bloc,” he said.

Abdullah, who is the vice president of the National Conference, also stressed the importance of establishing a structured communication framework.

“You need to have a programme of regular interactions,” he explained, adding “not that you just come alive once Lok Sabha elections are announced and suddenly start talking and trying to work things out”.

Abdullah’s comments suggest underlying tensions within the opposition alliance, indicating that infrequent meetings could potentially magnify minor disagreements.

“If we had a more regular process of interaction, perhaps these smaller irritants wouldn’t assume larger proportions,” he added.

Abdullah has also not been very happy with the electoral alliance his National Conference party formed with the Congress before the Jammu-Kashmir assembly elections, where it failed to pull its weight during campaigning.

The NC won 41 seats while Congress got six. Observers noted that Congress leaders did little work during the campaigning, and left all the heavy lifting to the NC.

INDIA bloc was formed as a combined opposition to stop the ruling BJP juggernaut but has failed to make much dent. Despite its good showing in the parliamentary elections, the Congress and its allies have failed miserably in two recent assembly elections – Haryana and Maharashtra.

Abdullah’s comments are further proof of the discontent within the INDIA bloc and the challenges it faces in countering the BJP in future political engagements.

In a candid assessment of recent electoral debacles for Congress, Abdullah highlighted the growing strains within political alliances, particularly focusing on the Congress party’s electoral performance and seat distribution strategies.

“The Congress needs to critically examine its strike rate and learn lessons applicable to future elections,” he said.

Recurring patterns of alliance discomfort have been observed across multiple states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra, he said adding these tensions have reportedly contributed to the breakdown of potential alliances, such as the failure to collaborate between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress in Delhi, despite previous parliamentary election cooperation.

Asked whether the Congress could get a ministerial berth in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah drew parallels with past power-sharing experiences, referencing the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government under Manmohan Singh when ministerial portfolios were determined by the number of legislators a party had. At that time Abdullah’s father, Farooq Abdullah, got a minor ministry.

“So if that worked for us then, it works for the Congress now. And the fact is that as a Union Territory, we are limited to having nine ministers. With nine ministers including the chief minister, I was not in a position to offer the Congress more than we did offer them,” he said.

The Congress party has indicated that their participation in the government will be contingent on J-K regaining its statehood, signalling potential future realignment of political strategies.

“So for the time being, they’ve made it very clear that so long as J-K remains a Union Territory, they’ll stay out. Once statehood is restored, then that will change. So we hope that when they’re done fighting in Parliament for other things, they will also talk about statehood for J-K.” he said.

Omar Abdullah Calls for Statehood

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday reiterated his demand for the restoration of statehood, stating that the promises made to the people must be honoured at all costs.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 42nd foundation day of SKIMS, Omar Abdullah said that people participated in droves in recent polls and that their commitment to the cause must be honoured.

When asked about declaration of holiday on the birth anniversary of National Conference founder Sheikh Abdullah, Omar said that they have a significant battle ahead-to ensure Jammu and Kashmir regains its status as a state. “This is not just about us but about the promises made by the Prime Minister to the people of J&K during parliamentary and assembly elections. People of J&K participated in those elections with full enthusiasm, hoping their trust would be honored.”

He added the Prime Minister and Home Minister were understandably occupied with polls in Maharashtra and elsewhere. “Now that those matters are resolved, we will talk to them again and expect them to fulfill their commitment to the people of J&K and restore its statehood without delay.”

On the issue of survey in Mosques and shrines across the country, Omar stressed the importance of India’s secular foundation.

He stated, “Our Constitution guarantees the right to live freely, irrespective of one’s religion or even if one chooses not to follow any religion. This fundamental principle of secularism must be upheld. However, a systematic effort seems to be underway to target our mosques and religious institutions. This is unacceptable.”

Omar further remarked, “We don’t ask for appeasement and not seeking appeasement doesn’t mean we should be targeted. Let us not victimise communities under the guise of opposing appeasement. Jammu and Kashmir has always been integral to India’s foundation, and its secular ethos must be preserved.”—(KNO)

Special Status Resolution Passed in Legislative Assembly Not Rejected, Door Still Open: CM Omar Abdullah

Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday said the resolution of special status passed in the Legislative Assembly recently has not been rejected and the door is open.

He, however, said as far as the release of political prisoners, the government has to wait for the restoration of statehood first.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of an event at Polo View, Srinagar, Omar while replying to a query about the fate of special status resolution said: “The resolution was passed by the majority of members in the Legislative Assembly. Congress members were also present in the House. It is alive and has not been rejected. The door is open. Let us get the Statehood, we will pursue the matter further.”

In reply to another query about release of political prisoners, Omar said: “Law and Order, Security continues to remain the domain of Centre. Despite this scenario, we have managed to ease the verification procedure. I made a speech in the Legislative Assembly stating that verification has been weaponised. Steps were taken to ease it out and more progress is on cards in this regard.” The Chief Minister said some people criticised the government stating that the resolution had nothing in it. “If there was nothing in the resolution, why Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah talked about it frequently,” Omar asked.

He said once the J&K gets Statehood, the government will follow the cases of political prisoners and ensure their release.

About today’s cabinet meeting, Omar said that the important decision taken in today’s meeting was to constitute a cabinet sub-committee comprising three members that would take a holistic view in the backdrop of Supreme Court directives. “The Committee will submit a report to the Cabinet and we will see how far we can go to rationalise the reservation policy,” Omar said as per KNO.

To a query about alleged torture of civilians in Kishtwar, the Chief Minister said that he has seen people dying during tortures in police and security forces camps in the past. “Thank God here, nobody has died. I urge the army to probe the case thoroughly and if any misconduct by the soldiers is found, the guilty should be court martialed and punished sternly,” Omar said.

To a query whether there would be improvement in power curtailment in winters, Omar said he has directed the Power department to ensure less curtailment in the areas where there is less theft. “I am hopeful to see improved power scenario in Kashmir this winter,” Omar said—(KNO)

CM Omar Abdullah Calls For Focus on Agriculture Varsities to Tackle Climate Change

Omar

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today emphasized the critical role of agriculture in addressing climate change and improving the economy of Jammu and Kashmir. He was speaking at the inauguration of the four-day National Agriculture Summit & Farmers’ Fair-2024 at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu.
Highlighting the exigency of climate change, the Chief Minister said, “Climate change is a huge challenge, and the responsibility lies on SKUAST (Kashmir and Jammu) to address it and assist our farmers. We can no longer depend solely on rain and snowfall, as climate patterns have drastically shifted. For instance, in our childhood, snowfall would arrive in December; now, it comes in February. Our average temperatures are also rising. To adapt, we need to promote modern agricultural practices, introduce new techniques and technologies, and raise awareness among farmers.”
He lauded the progress made by SKUAST-Jammu in recent years, saying, “I felt elated on visiting SKUAST-Jammu. Since my last visit, the university has made remarkable progress, for which I congratulate the Vice-Chancellor and his entire team.”
The Chief Minister expressed concern over the neglect of agriculture in discussions about J&K’s development.“In Jammu and Kashmir, we find farmers in every corner, yet when we discuss progress, we focus on factories, tourism, and facilities for pilgrims at religious places. Sadly, the contribution of farmers and the agriculture and allied sectors often goes unnoticed,” he said.

He stressed the economic potential of agriculture and allied sectors, stating, “I firmly believe that focusing on these sectors can significantly transform J&K’s economy. We rely heavily on imports for many necessities, such as dairy products, meat, and oilseeds. Our efforts should aim to produce these locally through import substitution. If we achieve surplus production, we can sell it outside, leading to a positive shift in J&K’s economy.”

Omar Abdullah called for efforts to restore farming as a viable and respected livelihood for future generations.

“Our farmers must feel confident that their hard work on the land will generate income. However, it is disheartening that the younger generation is distancing itself from agriculture. Productive agricultural land is increasingly being used for non-agricultural purposes because our children hesitate to connect with agriculture and allied sectors. This mindset needs to change,” he lamented.

Speaking about Jammu’s agricultural potential, he said, “Multiple-farming, cultivating staple crops, and utilizing land for high-value products hold immense potential.Jammu is already renowned for its RS Pura Basmati, Rajma and Gucchi mushrooms from Kishtwar. Products like olives and exotic fruits, which were unheard of just a few years ago, are now becoming common in our homes. There is no scarcity of potential here.”
He further emphasized the importance of undertaking research and ensuring that its benefits reach every corner of J&K.

“The practical implementation of research is crucial, and the responsibility lies in ensuring that its benefits reach every corner of Jammu and Kashmir. Farmers must be informed about the advantages of these practices so that agriculture becomes productive and attractive, even for the younger generation.”

The Chief Minister also pledged his government’s unwavering support to SKUAST, saying, “This four-day program is an excellent initiative for farmers and visitors to learn and benefit from. My government will fully support and assist the university in its endeavors. We stand shoulder to shoulder with you, and you will always find our doors open to help this institution thrive.”
During the event, Omar Abdullah released several books on agriculture and research authored by various experts. He also felicitated progressive farmers from Jammu division for their contributions to the sector.
Earlier, the Chief Minister inaugurated the National Agriculture Summit & Farmers’ Fair-2024 in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, Minister for Agriculture Production Javid Ahmad Dar, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-Jammu BN Tripathi, MLA RS Pura-Jammu South Dr. Narinder Singh Raina, and other dignitaries.

On the occasion, Omar Abdullah laid the foundation stone of the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development at the main campus of SKUAST-Jammu and planted saplings of various fruit plants alongside the Deputy CM, Agriculture Minister, MLA, and VC SKUAST-Jammu.

The Chief Minister also inspected stalls set up by agriculture and allied departments, interacting with staff and farmers. He inaugurated the Krishi Mela Rural Sports by blowing a whistle and witnessed a tug-of-war competition among boys and girls of different categories.

The event witnessed the participation of scholars, researchers, scientists, students, and progressive farmers, making it a significant platform for knowledge-sharing and capacity-building in agriculture.(KNS)

This Government is for Everyone’ in Jammu and Kashmir: Omar Abdullah

Omar Abdullah

In a  address to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah spoke on the Motion of Thanks to the Lieutenant Governor’s address, reflecting on Jammu and Kashmir’s past challenges and outlining his government’s priorities.

Abdullah acknowledged the J&K’s political and constitutional changes over the past six years, noting the loss of statehood, a unique constitution, and a regional flag. Despite these setbacks, he affirmed his government’s commitment to building a better future for Jammu and Kashmir. “We have lost a lot… but I will work tirelessly for the people of this Union Territory,” Abdullah declared.

He expressed gratitude to the electorate for their support, calling the government inclusive and focused on serving all communities, regardless of political affiliations.Abdullah emphasized the importance of recent elections, citing them as proof that democracy remains active in the region, despite initial doubts from some quarters.

Addressing criticisms from the opposition, Abdullah expressed disappointment over their exit from the session, noting that he hoped for meaningful discussions on issues like statehood and constitutional guarantees.

He clarified that the National Conference’s (NC) resolution for special status was not a compromise but a legitimate effort to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s rights.Abdullah also criticized the central government’s response to the region’s demands, expressing hope that autonomy might someday be restored.

He praised his administration’s focus on reforms, including student examination processes and job opportunities, adding that his government’s agenda would be set by the people of Kashmir, not social media.

Abdullah addressed security challenges, advocating for peace through cooperation rather than suppression and affirming his government’s support for the security forces. He also raised local issues, including difficulties faced by residents on highways and the CID verification process, urging review for individuals without serious charges.

Reiterating his commitment to restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, Abdullah said he remained optimistic about the J&K’s future. He concluded by affirming that while industries were welcome, there would be no compromise on local assets, and that the government’s long-term goals extended beyond the LG’s address. (KNS)

Before J&K Assembly Session Omar Abdullah Calls Alliance Partners Meeting Today

Omar Abdullah

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, as chairman of the National Conference (NC) legislature party, has called a meeting of legislators from the NC-led government alliance tonight at 7:30 PM.

The meeting will include representatives from coalition partners, such as Congress, CPI(M), AAP, and independent MLAs, to coordinate their strategy for the upcoming J&K assembly session, which begins on November 4.

The agenda includes discussions on key issues, the election of the assembly speaker, and strategies for addressing opposition challenges, a senior leader told KNS.

A central topic of interest is the potential tabling of a statehood bill in the assembly—a pressing demand from vocal leaders such as Sajjad Lone, who has consistently advocated for an open discussion on statehood within the assembly rather than limiting it to the cabinet. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and some Congress members have also called for a legislative debate on restoring statehood, expressing discontent with any attempt to bypass the assembly.

This assembly session is particularly significant, marking the first since Jammu & Kashmir was reclassified from a state to a Union Territory. Expectations are high for heated debates on statehood, an issue gaining traction among opposition figures and the public alike.

For the NC-led coalition, this session represents both a challenge and an opportunity to solidify its legislative influence. The BJP, holding 28 seats, is expected to mount a strong opposition, particularly around the question of statehood, potentially creating hurdles for the coalition government.

This historic session is anticipated to be closely monitored nationwide as it may signal the political direction of J&K’s leadership post-reorganization. The outcomes could shape how the region’s leaders negotiate with the central government and address the aspirations of those advocating for a return to statehood. (KNS)

Omar Abdullah Ready to Reclaim Cheif Minister chair

Farooq Abdullah with NC Elected Members

National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah was unanimously elected as the leader of the NC legislature party during a meeting held at the party’s Nawa-e-Subah headquarters here Thursday.

The development positions Omar as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir after his party emerged as the single-largest in the recently concluded assembly polls.Omar is now poised to return as the CM, a role he held from 2009 to 2014.

“A meeting of the legislature party was held where everyone unanimously chose Omar Abdullah as its leader,” NC President Farooq Abdullah told reporters after the NC legislature party meeting here. “The discussions with the pre-poll alliance partners – Congress and CPI (M) – will be held on Friday to finalise the government formation process.”Farooq said that their priority is to solve all issues faced by the people here.

“We hope we are treated well by the central government and we restore statehood,” he said. “The restoration of Article 370 will take time but our first job will be restoration of statehood.”Farooq said the party would talk to Congress and decide when to take the oath.

The NC secured 42 seats out of the total 90 seats that went to polls while its allies Congress won six and CPI (M) one seat, giving the alliance a comfortable majority.

Additionally, four independent MLAs also extended their support to the NC, increasing the coalition’s tally to 53 seats.Talking to reporters, Omar Abdullah said the party was awaiting a formal letter of support from Congress before officially staking its claim with the Lieutenant Governor.

“I am grateful to the NC legislators for placing their faith in me. We now have a majority with the support of four Independent MLAs, and we are in talks with Congress to finalise the letter of support,” Omar said.

About his next steps, he said that once Congress completes its internal processes, he would approach the Lieutenant Governor to form the government.“We expect Congress to provide the letter of support soon. After that, we will move forward with the formalities,” he said.

Omar reiterated that the new government would pass a resolution and engage with the central government for the restoration of statehood.“The government should work in harmony with the Lieutenant Governor for the welfare of the people. We aim for peaceful cooperation, not confrontation to regain our rightful status as a state,” he said.

Omar declined to comment on potential portfolio allocations or whether a Congress leader might assume the Deputy Chief Minister’s position.

“This government will represent everyone – those who voted for the Congress, the NC, the BJP, and even those who chose not to vote. In Srinagar, where only 20 percent voted, the remaining 80 percent deserve governance too, just as much as those in Jammu who supported the BJP,” he said.
