Apni Party’s Altaf Bukhari Urges Govt Not to Politicise FAT Schools Takeover

Altaf Bukhari

Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Sunday expressed hope that Education Minister Sakina Itoo’s assurance—that the government’s takeover of the Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT) schools is temporary—will prove true.

He wrote on his X handle: “One hopes that Education Minister Sakina Itoo’s assurance— that the government has taken over the management of FAT schools only as a temporary measure—will be proven by action, not merely by words. The government must ensure that, even during this temporary period, the schools are overseen by qualified educationists and professionals rather than administrative authorities.”

He further said, “Furthermore, the government must ensure that the future of the students and the careers of the teaching and non-teaching staff of these schools are not compromised in any way.”

Urging the government not to politicise this issue, Bukhari added, “The government (ruling party) must recognise that the issue of FAT schools is directly related to the future of thousands of students enrolled in them. Public sentiments are involved in this matter. Therefore, this issue cannot and should not be politicised for political gain or used as a means to settle political scores.”

Omar Abdullah Inspires Students at TEDx Kunjwani: “Go Beyond Boundaries, But Stay Within the Law”

Students at TEDx Kunjwani

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today addressed the TEDx event at JK Public School Kunjwani as chief guest, inspiring students to challenge limits and embrace the theme “Beyond Boundaries”.

Speaking to a hall full of students besides other eminent speakers and school administration, the Chief Minister said boundaries exist everywhere, in geography, politics, laws and borders, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes as restrictions. He noted that people often create self-imposed boundaries shaped by experiences or stereotypes. “These limits may be real or imagined, but every great exploration and advancement of civilisation has come from crossing boundaries,” he said.

Encouraging students to aim high, he urged them not to let boundaries hold them back. “Set lofty goals. Unless you test your limits, you cannot carve a unique identity for yourself,” he said. He advised them to speak up, ask questions and never let hesitation silence them. Gender, background or appearance, he added, should never be hurdles to achievement.

At the same time, he reminded students to distinguish between restrictive or imaginary boundaries and the laws of the land. “Go beyond boundaries, but do so lawfully. Goals must never be pursued by breaching the law,” he said.

“Set many goals and spend your life striving to achieve them. The pursuit itself is worthwhile, no matter what the outcome,” the Chief Minister told the gathering.

Other speakers who shared their ideas at the event included educationists such as Prof Amitabh Mattoo and Usha Mani.

BJP Alleges Sonia Gandhi Was Illegally Added to Voter List Before Acquiring Indian Citizenship

BJP Alleges Sonia Gandhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party – accused of ‘colluding’ with the Election Commission to commit voter fraud – counterattacked Wednesday by claiming ex-Congress boss Sonia Gandhi had been illegally, though briefly, added to the voter list 45 years ago, before she was an Indian citizen.

Ex-Union Minister Anurag Thakur claimed Mrs Gandhi – born Sonia Maino in Italy in 1946 – was added on the list from 1980 to1982, a year before she was an Indian citizen.

The allegations echoed what the BJP’s Amit Malviya posted on X hours earlier.

Mr Malviya posted what he said was a ‘photocopy of the extract from electoral rolls of 1980, indicating Sonia Gandhi was a voter when she did not yet acquire the citizenship of Bharat’. “If this isn’t blatant electoral malpractice, what is?”

He claimed Mrs Gandhi – who married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968 – had been added to the voter list while the Gandhi family lived at the official residence of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

He claimed Sonia Gandhi’s name was added in a revision of the voter list – for the New Delhi parliamentary constituency – before the 1980 Lok Sabha election

J&K Congress Launches Hunger Strike Campaign for Restoration of Statehood

Hunger Strike Campaign

The Jammu and Kashmir Congress leader on Saturday sat a hunger strike here to press for the restoration of the Union territory’s statehood.

The strike was launched by Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Karra at the party’s head office at M A Road here.Karra and other senior leaders of the party, including AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir and party MLAs, joined the hunger strike.

A similar hunger strike will be observed in Jammu on Sunday.

The hunger strike is part of the party’s campaign ‘hamari riyasat, hamara haq’ to press for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, which was downgraded and bifurcated into two Union territories – J-K and Ladakh – on August 5, 2019, by the Centre.

The Centre also abrogated Articles 370 and 35A that day.

Speaking to reporters, Karra said the party has launched a “struggle to awaken the blind, deaf and dumb government in Delhi”.

“We selected this day as it is the day when the ‘Quit India Movement’ was launched. From August 9 to 21, the party will observe six hunger strikes across various districts of J-K,” he said.

The JKPCC president said the peaceful hunger strike has been launched for the wishes and aspirations of the 1.40 crore citizens of J-K.

He said that as the Parliament session is going on, the party would wait for any development related to the restoration of J-K’s statehood.“If there is no development, then on August 21 (when the session ends), a new programme will be given,” he added.

Shashi Tharoor Urges 50% Tariff on US Goods in Retaliation to Trump’s New Trade Penalty on India

Shashi Tharoor

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said that India should also raise tariffs on American goods to 50 per cent in response to the US imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports.

Tharoor questioned why India should stop at the current 17 per cent tariff and emphasised that the country should not be intimidated by such actions. He also said that no country should be allowed to threaten India in this manner.

Speaking to the reporters, Shashi Tharoor said, “It will definitely have an impact because we have a trade of $90 billion with them, and if everything becomes 50% more expensive, buyers will also think why should they buy Indian things?… If they do this, we should also impose a 50% tariff on American exports… It is not that any country can threaten us like this…”

“Our average tariffs on American goods are 17%. Why should we stop at 17%? We should also raise it to 50%… We need to ask them, do they not value our relationship? If India doesn’t matter to them, they should also not matter to us,” he added.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order on August 6 imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws, for the increase, claiming that India’s imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States.

Terming the United States’ move to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil imports from Russia as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) declared that New Delhi will take “all actions necessary to protect its national interests.

In further development, a senior United States Administration Official told ANI that there is simply “no comparison” between the hundreds of billions of dollars of growing Indian imports of Russian oil and the modest US imports of Russian goods.

In response to a question, the US official told ANI, “There is simply no comparison between the hundreds of billions of dollars of growing Indian imports of Russian oil, and the modest U.S. imports of Russian goods, which amount to less than 1% of the value of Indian imports”. (ANI)
