Farooq Abdullah Says Ladakh Youth Driven to Violence After Failed Peaceful Protests, Urges Centre for Dialogue

Farooq Abdullah Speaking With media on India Pakistan War

Former chief minister and National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah, on Thursday, said that the youth of Ladakh were driven to violence after their peaceful protest failed to bear any results.

Addressing media persons in Srinagar, Abdullah said whatever happened in Ladakh was a serious issue as the youth resorted to violent means after adopting the Gandhian policy to get their demands fulfilled.

“These protests and clashes clearly indicate that the youth of Ladakh feel betrayed as the Government of India has failed to fulfill the promises made with them during the last five years,” he said.

Abdullah said that witnessing such clashes at a place that already had foreign interference could prove dangerous at any point in time. He appealed to the Centre to initiate a dialogue with the people of Ladakh, saying that neglecting the long-pending demands of people in Leh could deepen unrest in the sensitive region.

“The recent violent clashes reported in Leh are the outcome of the 5 years of betrayal. People of Ladakh were demanding inclusion under the Sixth Schedule and restoration of statehood for the past five years, but only received vague assurances,” Abdullah said.

He said whatever happened in Ladakh was not good, as people earlier used peaceful means under the leadership of Sonam Wangchuk, who adopted the Gandhian policy.“But nothing came out of it. Youth of Leh resorted to violence after they realised that their voices were being ignored,” Abdullah said.

He said that Wangchuk did not do anything as he adopted non-violence over the years.

“But the growing frustration among the youth pushed them to violent means to fight for their rights,” Abdullah said. He said that given Ladakh’s strategic position, it makes the situation more delicate.

“China is on our heads and has already put its control on some portion of the land. The Government of India should negotiate and settle this issue,” Abdullah said.Ruling out any role of outsiders, he said that outsiders are blamed for their role whenever anything happens.

“People of J&K also have bitter experiences of broken promises, as we were told that statehood would be restored after delimitation. Later, we were told that statehood would be given after elections, but nothing happened in the last 11 months,” Abdullah said. “Same betrayal is being repeated with the people of Ladakh.” He urged the Centre that the time was ripe to turn promises into action.

“People of Ladakh are feeling let down; Delhi must move faster with a positive approach,” Abdullah said.Referring to border concerns, he said that the entire world knows how much Indian land was in the possession of China, and there was no option to hide the truth.

“Ladakh is a sensitive region. This is the reality. We should also acknowledge that China has never accepted the McMahon Line since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s time,” Abdullah said.He said that claims of US President Donald Trump that India was supporting Ukraine were not true.“India is not in support of any war. But such statements put the global spotlight on our region,” Abdullah said.

He expressed sympathy with the family of the youth who lost their lives in the clashes in Ladakh.“My party and I stand with the family of those who lost their lives. Our prayers are with them,” he said.

Farooq Abdullah: The Political Journey of a Kashmiri Veteran

Farooq Abdullah

Farooq Abdullah is one of the most experienced and colourful political leaders in India. For more than forty years, he has been at the centre of politics in Jammu and Kashmir, carrying forward the legacy of his father, Sheikh Abdullah, while also carving out his own distinct identity. Known for his charisma, outspoken nature, and sharp political instincts, Abdullah remains a towering figure in Kashmiri public life.

farooq

Early Life and Education

Farooq Abdullah was born on 21 October 1937 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He is the eldest son of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, also known as the “Lion of Kashmir,” who founded the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) and played a key role in shaping the state’s political destiny after independence.

Farooq grew up in a politically charged atmosphere but chose medicine as his profession. He studied medicine in India and then went on to the United Kingdom, where he trained further and worked as a doctor. His years abroad gave him both professional skills and exposure to global culture.

Entry into Politics

Though trained as a doctor, Farooq Abdullah’s destiny was tied to politics. After his father Sheikh Abdullah’s death in 1982, Farooq returned fully to public life and was chosen as the President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference. Within months, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

His entry marked a generational shift in Kashmiri politics. Charismatic, tall, and outspoken, Farooq Abdullah quickly became a familiar figure in national politics as well.

Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir

Farooq Abdullah served as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir multiple times:

  • 1982–1984: His first term, which ended abruptly after he was dismissed by the then Governor in a dramatic political coup supported by the Centre.
  • 1986–1990: His second term saw major challenges, including growing unrest and the rise of militancy in Kashmir. He resigned in 1990 when insurgency peaked.
  • 1996–2002: After six years of President’s Rule, Farooq Abdullah returned as CM with a large majority. This period was marked by attempts at normalisation, though violence and instability continued.

Throughout these years, Abdullah’s leadership style was often described as bold and sometimes controversial, but he remained the key face of mainstream politics in Jammu and Kashmir.

Role in National Politics

Farooq Abdullah also made his mark in New Delhi. He was elected several times to the Lok Sabha and served as a Union Minister in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. As Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy (2009–2014), he promoted solar and wind energy projects across the country.

His presence in Parliament was never dull—Abdullah became known for his candid speeches, humour, and ability to build friendships across party lines.

Personal Style and Popularity

Farooq Abdullah has always stood out because of his personality. Whether in Kashmir or Delhi, he is known for mixing humour with political sharpness. His frank and often bold statements have landed him in controversies but also won him admirers.

In Kashmir, many see him as a “people’s politician” who connects easily with ordinary citizens. At the same time, his critics argue that his party’s governance did not do enough to resolve deep-rooted problems in the state.

Controversies and Challenges

Farooq Abdullah’s career has not been free of controversy.

  • His terms as Chief Minister coincided with some of the most difficult years in Kashmir, especially the rise of militancy in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
  • Political opponents have accused him of being too close to New Delhi at times, while others have accused him of not doing enough to check violence.
  • In recent years, he has also faced investigations in alleged financial irregularities, including the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) case. Abdullah has denied any wrongdoing.

Current Role and Legacy

Even in his late eighties, Farooq Abdullah remains active in politics. He continues to lead the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and has played an important role in recent political developments, especially after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. He was one of the senior leaders detained during the clampdown but later released, after which he helped form the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) to push for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

Farooq Abdullah’s legacy is a mix of achievements, controversies, and resilience. He has been a bridge between Kashmir and New Delhi, sometimes criticised, sometimes praised, but always central to the political story of Jammu and Kashmir.

Conclusion

From doctor to chief minister, from national politician to regional elder statesman, Farooq Abdullah’s life is a reflection of the complex history of Jammu and Kashmir itself. Loved and criticised in equal measure, he remains a key voice for his people and one of the most influential Kashmiri leaders of modern times.

Farooq Abdullah Urges Delhi to Engage Ladakh in Dialogue Amid Rising Unrest

Farooq Abdullah Speaking With media on India Pakistan War

National Conference Patron Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday urged the Government of India to engage in meaningful dialogue with the people of Ladakh, warning that neglecting their long-standing demands could deepen unrest in the sensitive Himalayan region.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, Farooq Abdullah said the recent violent incidents in Leh were the direct outcome of years of unaddressed grievances. He noted that Ladakhis had been demanding inclusion under the Sixth Schedule and restoration of statehood for the past five years but had only received vague assurances.

“Whatever happened in Ladakh was not good. People had been struggling peacefully under the leadership of Sonam Wangchuk, who adopted Gandhian methods, but nothing came out of it. When the youth of Leh realised their voices were being ignored, they resorted to violence,” Abdullah remarked.

He stressed that Wangchuk himself had maintained non-violence, but growing frustration pushed the youth to act. “Sonam Wangchuk didn’t do anything, but the youth of Ladakh did, and they are fighting for their rights,” Abdullah said.

The NC leader warned that Ladakh’s strategic position made the situation more delicate. “China is on our heads. The Government of India must negotiate and settle this issue. Every time something happens, they blame outsiders, but we have a bitter experience of broken promises. Kashmir was told that statehood would be given after delimitation, then after elections, but nothing happened. The same betrayal is being repeated with Ladakh,” he said.

Abdullah argued that the issue should not be allowed to fester. “It’s time to settle the matter and turn promises into action. Delhi must move faster. The people of Ladakh have been let down,” he asserted.

Turning his attention to border concerns, Abdullah as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust, said the reality of Chinese occupation could not be hidden. “The whole world knows how much Indian land is in the possession of China. For how long can we take shelter in lies? It is time to face reality. Ladakh is sensitive, and China has never accepted the McMahon Line since Nehru’s time,” he said.

He also touched upon international pressures, mentioning that former US President Donald Trump recently claimed that India was supporting the Ukraine war. “This is not true. India does not support any war. But such statements show the global spotlight on our region,” Abdullah observed.

He urged restraint and rejected the path of confrontation. “NC will never accept a way where youth suffer. I don’t want bloodshed. We need dialogue, understanding, and honesty,” he said.

Abdullah was accompanied at the press conference by senior NC leaders Ali Muhammad Sagar, Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal,  Shamima Firdous and others. [KNT]

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives during the violent protests in Ladakh.

In a statement, he said the tragedy reflects the aftershocks of the unilateral decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and downgrade it into Union Territories in 2019. He noted that unfulfilled promises made to the people have now resulted in “unfortunate consequences.”

Mirwaiz urged the government to honour commitments made to Ladakhis and take urgent steps to prevent further loss of life.

Omar Abdullah Says J&K People Should Not Be Punished for BJP’s Electoral Defeat

Omar Abdullah Calls for Statehood

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir cannot be punished for the defeat of Bhartiya Janata Party in the region.

Speaking with reporters, CM Omar, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that people of Jammu and Kashmir were promised a three-way process including delimitation, election and statehood.

He said that statehood has not been restored, indicating it cannot be restored due to the BJP’s defeat in the assembly elections last year. “The people of J&K cannot be punished for the BJP’s defeat,” he added.

He said that the biggest challenge at present is that J&K is not a state. “We hoped that statehood would be restored given the promises done with the people and even the Supreme Court was told about its restoration after the three-way process,” he said.

CM Omar further said that the tourist footfall has not increased the way they expected after recent pilgrimages. “Every sector has been facing losses in the absence of the expected tourist footfall. However, our efforts are still on to attract tourists to Jammu and Kashmir,” he added—(KNO)

Omar Abdullah Says Yasin Malik’s Case Should Be Left to Judiciary, Urges PM for Flood Relief Package

Yasin Malik

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said JKLF chairman Yasin Malik’s case should not be politicised but left to the judiciary to decide, and asserted that the separatist leader has been a “votary of dialogue” since giving up arms. His remarks came a day after PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said she has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take a humanitarian view of the case against Malik as he had renounced violence and chosen the path of political engagement.

Malik, who is serving a life sentence in a terror funding case, was arrested in February 2019 and is facing several cases, including those related to the kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed and the attack on IAF personnel at Rawalpora in 1990.

“There is no need for politics. Whatever the political ideology, I only know that, however he started, he gave up arms and took the path of peace. He tried to resolve the issues through dialogue and was always in support of the dialogue,” Abdullah told reporters here when asked about Malik’s case. The CM said the court decisions should be left to the courts.

“It is not a good thing to put political pressure on the courts. I will only say this much; let us see what happens,” he added. To a question about his expectations from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir to assess the situation in the aftermath of the recent floods, Abdullah expressed the hope that a good package will be provided to the Union Territory to compensate the affected people.

“The PM is coming, and obviously we will apprise him of the situation and the losses suffered by the people and hope he will provide a good package for the people of J-K,” the CM said.

Abdullah said the floods caused huge devastation in J&K. “Lives were lost, especially in the two yatras in Kishtwar and Katra. There has been a huge loss of property as well; 330 bridges were washed away, 1500 km of road were damaged, and several government buildings were damaged. “Land and crops also suffered damage, and our horticulture, our fruits, also suffered losses. We hope that an assessment will be done and a package will be given so that we will provide compensation to the people,” he added. Asked about the opposition targeting his government, the CM said it is the job of the opposition to criticise.

“What is the job of the opposition? It is to oppose. They are called ‘a party in opposition’, what does it mean? That they will oppose. Whatever you do, they will find something to criticise in that,” he said. Abdullah said the criticism by the opposition will not affect his work for the people.

J&K AAP Chief and MLA Mehraj Malik Detained Under PSA in Doda

MLA Mehraj Malik

Jammu and Kashmir AAP chief and MLA Mehraj Malik was on Monday detained under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) in Doda district, officials said. This is for the first time that a sitting MLA has been detained under the PSA, an administrative law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases.

Earlier, a case was registered against Malik after he was allegedly seen removing medical equipment and life-saving drugs from a government-run Ayushman Arogya Mandir/Health and Wellness Centre at Kencha village in Doda district.

The incident was live-streamed on social media, reported Tribune newspaper.

Quoting an official statement from the district health authorities, it said the wellness centre in Kencha village, Thathri block, has been operating out of a rented two-room private building for over five years. Nearly two years ago, one of the rooms had sunk and sustained structural damage, prompting repeated safety concerns from residents.

Following inspections, the Block Medical Officer, Thathri, took up the matter with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Doda, to relocate the facility. Several committees were formed to assess alternative sites, and after due process, a building owned by one Abdul Rashid was approved. However, Malik opposed the decision, accusing the administration of corruption and favouritism, and instead supported another proposal from Ghulam Ali Malik, which was rejected for failing to meet the required criteria.

The statement alleged that the MLA, accompanied by others, forcibly removed equipment and medicines, disrupting emergency services and affecting the distribution of drugs to patients.

An FIR has been registered at Gandoh Police Station under Sections 221, 329(3), 351(2), 305(e), and 191(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against those involved, including the MLA.

In response, Mehraj Malik issued a statement on social media, saying he had already submitted a written request to the CMO, Doda, for relocating the centre in line with public demand and to a location he claimed was more suitable. He further alleged that the Deputy Commissioner was attempting to “favour the mafia” and used harsh words against the official in his remarks.

Police cited as many as 18 FIRs and multiple public complaints against Malik, accusing him of abusing officials, obstructing relief and development works, and instigating youth in Doda district. Authorities said the detention was necessary to maintain public order, and hinted that more PSA detentions could follow in the coming days, reported news agency KDC.

In the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir elections, Malik defeated his nearest rival from the BJP in Doda constituency by a margin of over 4,538 votes and registered the first win for his party in the Union territory.

He won the District Development Council elections from Kahara constituency of Doda on December 24, 2020. He resigned from the post after winning the assembly elections in October last year.

Omar Abdullah: Jammu-Srinagar

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has suffered extensive damages at multiple locations due to incessant heavy rainfall over the past few days, and full restoration may take up to 20–25 days.

Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said that the government has already engaged with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the construction company and district administrations concerned to expedite repair work.

“The situation is being assessed. The highway has suffered damages at several points due to landslides. It will take around 20 to 25 days for complete restoration. However, we have prepared an alternate route where double-side traffic is being managed for now,” Omar Abdullah said.

He added that areas around Udhampur have been badly affected by the rains, and once restoration there is completed, stranded traffic will be allowed to move.

On a query about the cloudburst in Rajgarh, the Chief Minister said he was informed by the local MLA about the incident and immediate relief was announced. “DC and SP reached the spot, and necessary arrangements were also made by the Red Cross. We will do whatever more is needed,” he said.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, considered the lifeline of Kashmir, has remained closed for the past two days due to continuous landslides and sinking of road stretches, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. Officials said restoration work is being carried out on war footing, though fresh shooting stones are slowing down the process.

Mehbooba Mufti Leads Srinagar Protest

former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti led a protest march in Srinagar, demanding the release and return of Kashmiri prisoners detained in jails across India. The protesters, carrying placards and raising slogans of “Bail, not Jail,” aimed to highlight the plight of detainees, many of whom Mufti claimed are innocent and denied basic constitutional rights. She accused the government of neglecting these prisoners and urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to raise the issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, specifically requesting that detainees held outside Jammu and Kashmir be transferred back to the region for fair legal proceedings and family access. The march, which started at the PDP headquarters and headed toward Lal Chowk, was stopped by police. Mufti emphasized that the protest was a humanitarian effort, not a political one, and called for reforms such as speedy trials, transparent remission policies, and access to medical bail and parole to uphold prisoners’ rights.
