J&K MeT Issues Adverse Weather Advisory: Heavy Rain, Snowfall and Transport Disruptions Expected October 4–7

 The Meteorological (MeT) Department has issued an adverse weather advisory forecasting rain in the plains and snow in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas beginning on Saturday.

The advisory, issued on Friday, said that a strong western disturbance is approaching J&K and adjoining areas, under whose effect light to moderate rain in the plains and snow in the higher reaches is likely to occur from October 4 to 7, with peak activity during the night of October 5 to the morning of October 7.

“Under the influence of this western disturbance, moderate to heavy snowfall is likely to occur in Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Zojila Pass, Pir Ki Gali, Razdan Pass, Sinthan Pass and Kupwara-Sadna Pass. Moderate snowfall is likely to occur over the middle reaches. Light to moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the plains of Kashmir, and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over the Jammu region with thunderstorm/lightning/with strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour gushing to 60 to 70 Kilometres per hour,” said the MeT Department.

The adverse weather is likely to cause disruption of surface transport on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, Srinagar-Leh highway and all other roads in the middle and higher reaches of the union territory.

“Chances of landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at vulnerable places. Farmers are advised to suspend all farming activities from 5th to 7th October. Rise in water level in rivers, streams, nallahs and low-lying areas will take place,” the advisory said.

J&K has suffered unprecedented floods in August-September, causing huge devastation, especially in the Jammu division. Huge losses to private and public Infrastructure, roads, buildings and other facilities were caused by those floods.

Agricultural lands in Samba, Jammu, Kathua, and orchards in Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama and Anantnag suffered heavy damage due to the washing away of chunks of land.

 The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a weather advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, forecasting generally cloudy skies with a possibility of light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds at scattered places in Kashmir and isolated areas of Jammu Division on April 21.

Residents and travelers are advised to plan accordingly and follow administrative and traffic advisories.Farmers are recommended to resume farm operations from April 22 onwards, as the weather is expected to be generally dry on April 22-23.

However, another spell of thundershowers is predicted for April 24-25, with potential hailstorms and gusty winds. The weather is expected to remain dry from April 26.

Safety precautions:

Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning.Be cautious of landslides, shooting stones, and rockfalls at vulnerable places.

However, the major impact is expected from April 18-20, when the region will witness generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and snow in higher reaches at most places. There’s a possibility of moderate to heavy rain at isolated to scattered places during April 18-19, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

The Met Centre advises all concerned to plan accordingly and follow Admin/Traffic advisories. Farmers are recommended to suspend farm operations during April 18-20 due to the expected weather conditions.

There is also a possibility of moderate snow over higher reaches, particularly on April 19, and landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones at vulnerable places.

After April 20, the weather is expected to dry up, with generally cloudy skies on April 21 having a possibility of light rain/thunder at scattered places, and dry conditions from April 22-27.

According to the Met, April 21 is likely to see generally cloudy skies with a possibility of light rain and thunderstorms at scattered places.The weather is expected to dry up from April 22 to 25. However, another spell of cloudy skies is forecasted for April 26-27.

There’s also a possibility of moderate snow over higher reaches and landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones at vulnerable places.Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and plan accordingly.

Weather Advisory for Jammu & Kashmir: Light Rain, Strong Winds Expected on March 28

The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has issued a weather advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting a mix of light rain and strong surface winds in the region.

Isolated areas in Kashmir and Jammu Division may experience light rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by strong surface winds reaching 60-70 km/h during the afternoon and late afternoon of March 28th.

Generally dry weather is expected from March 29-31st, with dry conditions forecasted to continue from April 1-6th.

Residents and visitors are advised to take necessary precautions, with travelers, tourists, and transporters urged to follow administrative and traffic advisories.

Farmers can resume farm operations, while the general public is cautioned to stay indoors and avoid boating, Shikara riding, and standing near weak structures and electric wires due to strong surface winds.
