Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Supports Aga Ruhullah Mehdi’s Protest, Demands Rationalization of Reservation Policy in J&K

Mirwaiz-Umar-Farooq

Kashmir’s Chief Cleric Mirwaiz Umar farooq on Monday demand rationalisation in the reservation policy in J&K and also extended support to a protest called by MP from Srinagar, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi.

In a post on X, Mirwaiz wrote, “The issue of reservations should be addressed with justice and fairness by those in charge, safeguarding the interests of all segments of society, not at the expense of any one group. The current status of reservations does that, by undermining the interests of the General / open merit category. Fervent appeal to address their concerns immediately! Support #openmeritstudentsassociation @OMSA_JK sit in protest.”

“Would be part of it if authorities allowed. My delegation will be there to support.
Will also raise the issue in #JamaMasjid whenever permitted to go”, Mirwaiz said in a post on X.

Mirwaiz-Umar-Farooq

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today  expressed deep anguish after being barred from delivering the Friday sermon at Srinagar’s historic Jama Masjid for the third consecutive week.

In a social media post on X, Mirwaiz highlighted the emotional impact on the worshippers, stating:”Again prevented from going to #JamaMasjid for third consecutive Friday. Despite the bone chilling cold thousands of faithful-the elderly, women, physically challenged, children, people from all over the valley gather, waiting expectantly with a lot of affection and devotion to listen to the word of God at the Grand Mosque.

“What hurt and disappointment it brings to them all when those in power assert brute force and detain me, totally impervious and heartless to the grief they cause to them, to me and to the Muslims of the valley,” it added. (KNS)

Kashmir Awaits Answer: Will Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Deliver Friday Sermon Amid Continued Uncertainty?

mirwaiz

Every Friday in Kashmir brings a lingering question: Will Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, be permitted to deliver his sermon at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar? The decision, often taken at the highest administrative level, reflects a broader dilemma in handling the Valley’s religious and political dynamics.

In recent weeks, the Mirwaiz has been prevented from addressing the faithful. This comes after a brief period earlier this year when he resumed sermons following his four-year house arrest imposed before the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. His first sermon after his release in September 2023 saw him emotionally recount the struggles faced by the Kashmiri people, calling for dialogue and reconciliation.

A senior government official explained that the policy surrounding Mirwaiz remains fluid, with decisions swaying between local police input and directives from top administrators. Authorities cite his occasional political statements during sermons as a primary reason for restricting his access to the pulpit. Recent comments condemning violence in Sambhal and other political matters have reportedly raised concerns.

Critics argue that such actions undermine the government’s claims of peace in the region. A police officer noted that arbitrarily barring Mirwaiz could be counterproductive, especially given his history as a moderate voice advocating dialogue.

Mirwaiz, whose father and uncle were victims of violence, has long been a proponent of peaceful resolution. However, his intermittent detentions and restrictions reflect the Centre’s struggle to balance religious freedoms with perceived security concerns.

Opposition leaders, including PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, have criticized the government for these actions. Both called for Mirwaiz to be allowed to perform his religious duties without interference, emphasizing his role as a revered spiritual leader.

Despite the challenges, Mirwaiz remains steadfast in his commitment to representing the people of Kashmir. Speaking about his situation, he stated, “The pulpit of Jamia Masjid has always been a voice of the people. Silencing me won’t silence their concerns.”

The Jamia Masjid, under the Mirwaiz’s leadership, continues to stand as a symbol of faith and resistance in Kashmir, even as the region navigates its complex political landscape.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Condemns House Arrest, Voices Concern Over Kashmiri Prisoners

Mirwaiz-Umar-Farooq

For the second consecutive week, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was disallowed from delivering the Friday sermon at Jama Masjid in Srinagar.

Expressing his dismay, Mirwaiz posted a strongly worded statement on X (formerly Twitter), condemning his house arrest and the continued imprisonment of thousands of Kashmiri prisoners.

In his post, Mirwaiz said: “Again disallowed from going to Jama Masjid on a Friday for the second consecutive week.As I raise people’s issues and concerns from the pulpit as is my duty, it seems to make the authorities jittery and uncomfortable, so lock him up! As if by locking me up issues will disappear and reality altered. But an authoritarian mindset can’t think beyond… strongly condemn my house arrest and the imprisonment of thousands of Kashmiri prisoners who are victims of this mindset.” (KNS)

Religious Surveys and Police Actions in Sambhal UP a Growing Concern for Muslim Sentiments in India: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

Mirwaiz-Umar-Farooq

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, delivering the Friday sermon at Jama Masjid, Srinagar, addressed pressing issues concerning Muslims in India and Kashmir, expressing grave concerns over recent events and their implications.

“Five Muslim youth were killed in police firing during a survey of the 500-year-old Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. This survey was ordered by the court. The killing of these youth as part of discriminatory police action is both deeply distressing and highly condemnable.

While this matter is yet unresolved, another court in Rajasthan’s Ajmer has ordered a survey of the iconic Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the revered shrine of Sufi saint Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti (Rah). Earlier, the Gyanvapi Mosque too underwent a court-ordered survey. A deliberate pattern seems to be emerging: doubts are first raised, followed by court-mandated surveys, which then lead to majority claims being prioritised. The events surrounding the Babri Masjid—its disputed claims, demolition, and the subsequent court decisions—remain vivid in the memory of Muslims.

This is a profoundly troubling and serious matter for Muslims not only in India and Kashmir but across the subcontinent and the wider world. The shrine of Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti, a saint revered by Muslims globally, attracts thousands of devotees daily. This 800-year-old shrine is deeply connected to the history and cultural spread of Islam in the Indian subcontinent. For the people of Kashmir, it holds special significance as a site of pilgrimage.

Actions such as these, backed by the judiciary and the government, gravely undermine the religious sentiments of millions of Muslims in this region. If India is truly a secular state as its preamble asserts, governed by a constitution that includes the Places of Worship Act, why are such divisive issues continually raised and entertained? The answer, sadly, is known to many. This deliberate and dangerous trend is being actively encouraged, and its consequences could be dire.

Furthermore, the issue of the Waqf amendment is causing deep anxiety among Muslims in India, as well as in Jammu and Kashmir. The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) has already sent a letter to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), seeking a meeting to discuss this matter. Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir, like those across India and the subcontinent, are watching these developments with growing concern. If this mindset of targeting Islamic heritage and institutions is not curtailed, any backlash resulting from these provocations will be the responsibility of the authorities.

I also strongly condemn the actions of the police in preventing media coverage of my speech at Jama Masjid by barring journalists from entering the mosque. The media plays a vital role in reporting matters of public interest and concern. Obstructing their work or harassing them undermines the principles of transparency and accountability, which are essential for any democratic state.”

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s address highlights the deepening concerns among Muslims over the perceived targeting of their religious institutions and the broader implications for communal harmony in the region. His statement reflects a call for justice, accountability, and the safeguarding of constitutional values.

Is offering Funeral Prayers in Naya Kashmir a crime: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

mirwaiz

Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad umar Farooq has strongly condemned the actions of the Government for placing him under house arrest and preventing him from attending a pre-scheduled condolence gathering for the late Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Ahmad Shah Sahib, son of the Muhaajir-e-Millat Mirwaiz Moulana Muhammad Yusuf Shah (RA) and brother in law of shaheed e Millat Mirwaiz Molvi Farooq(RA).

This gathering was to take place at the family’s ancestral house Mirwaiz Manzil  Rajouri Kadal, followed by a prayer in absentia ( nimaz e jinaza ) at the Central Jamia Masjid Srinagar for the deceased, statement issued to KNS reads.

Mirwaiz in a statement expressed great disappointment that he was barred from participating in the condolence assembly for the prominent figure and  family patriarch whose passing away was widely condoled and people from all over the valley wanted to come to express their condolences .

“However , the administration not only closed the historic Mirwaiz Manzil Rajouri Kadal but also locked down central Jamia Masjid not allowing the absentia funeral prayer .Infact , officials of the Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid had been communicated that if a prayer in absentia took place, an FIR would be lodged by the authorities,” the statement said.

Mirwaiz said the J&K administration’s behaviour is not only tantamount to the deprivation of his personal  freedom but has  also deeply hurt the sentiments of the thousands of people who wished to express condolence and solidarity with him during this time of grief.

He also questioned the reality of the Lieutenant Governor’s frequent claims of creating a “Naya Kashmir”, saying such claims are hollow when a basic human right to condole collectively is suppressed and religious rites for deceased banned, statement reads.

Meanwhile, yesterday, after the funeral prayer, Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Ahmad Shah Sahib was laid to rest amid tears in Bahria Town, Islamabad. (KNS)

Islamic reform must to counter drug addiction, social degradation: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

mirwaiz

Kashmir’s top religious cleric and Hurriyat (M) chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Thursday raised concerns over the alarming rise of drug addiction in the valley, calling it one of the most pressing social challenges in present times.

According to a 2018 national survey conducted by the ministry on the extent and pattern of substance use in India, over 14.09 lakh people aged between 10 and 75 in Kashmir were using various psychoactive substances.

Mirwaiz stressed the need of a moral reform grounded in Islamic teachings to counter these issues. He urged civil society, and authorities to unite in addressing this escalating crisis.

The head cleric also expressed his deep sorrow over the recent attack in Gagangeer where seven people were killed while five others were injured.“It is unfortunate that those who come here for food and salary are being targeted,” he said, as he condemned the attack, news agency KINS reported.

He voiced concerns over the distractions faced by the younger generation, particularly the negative impact of social media and intense competition.

“We are seeing a growing number of children facing psychological problems due to these distractions. Education is not just about earning degrees but about building a moral and social structure,” he remarked.

He called for a collective effort from parents, teachers, religious leaders, and society at large to address these challenges, urging them to follow the teachings of the Quran and Hadith in guiding the younger generation. He said that parents should provide basic Islamic education to school-going children after school hours, stressing the importance of nurturing moral values from an early age.

“If we take advantage of our social structure, we can overcome many challenges,” he concluded, urging parents and the community to play a more active role in shaping the character of the next generation.

High Court to Hear Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s House Arrest Case on 4th October 2024

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

The hearing of the case of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s house arrest/illegal detention has been listed on 4th October 2024 in the High court Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s is under house detention since last one month.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

Pertinent to mention here that Dr.Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Umar Farooq had earlier filed a writ petition no.2400/2024 in the Hon’ble Jammu & Kashmir &Ladakh High court which had been listed in November 2024. Meanwhile he incessantly has been once again put under illegal and unauthorised detention without any formal orders by the administration even during the pendency of the said writ petition , depriving him of his fundamental rights guaranteed to him including his religious rights as well. He therefore was compelled to file another CMP NO.5884/2024 along with an urgency memo. The CMP has been now listed in the honble high court on the 4th (Friday)of this month.

It is expected that the honourable high court will provide the much needed relief to the Mirwaiz in view of laws of natural justice and human rights also enshrined in the constitution and he will be set free . An appeal is also made to the legal fraternity, political organisation and human rights groups to raise their voice against this blatant violation of the Mirwaiz’s fundamental rights.
