Ghulam Nabi Azad Calls for United Political Stand to Restore Jammu and Kashmir Statehood

Ghulam Nabi Azad

Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad has called for a unified political approach for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.Azad also expressed concern over the state of development in Jammu and Kashmir, saying while central projects were progressing, state-level initiatives were “completely halted”.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

“Even the prime minister and the home minister have committed to restoring it (statehood) on the floor of Parliament. Some mistakes kept happening due to which there was a delay. First, a demand should be placed (before the government), but people immediately take to the streets,” Azad told reporters here.

“The matter should be discussed seriously, not just to divert public attention,” he said.

Speaking on the ongoing protests and political mobilisations demanding statehood, Azad asserted that while everyone has the right to protest, meaningful dialogue with the central leadership should have preceded such actions.

“Protests are of two kinds — symbolic and goal-oriented. But before hitting the streets, the political leadership should have engaged with Delhi. We need unity, not fragmentation, on this issue,” he said.

Azad emphasised that the demand for the restoration of statehood has a broad consensus across communities and regions.

“There is no opposition to the idea of statehood — be it in Jammu, Kashmir, or among any religious groups,” he said.

On the National Conference’s recent call for a special session on statehood, Azad welcomed the idea, stating that the Assembly is a shared platform for all parties and the matter should not be viewed through a partisan lens.

Amid speculation about his potential appointment as the vice-president of India, Azad dismissed the reports as baseless.

“These are mere rumours. Serious constitutional posts should not be discussed on the streets. The media and public should not entertain such talks,” he said.

He also parried a direct reply to questions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, saying the issue remains under debate and is likely to be taken up in Parliament.

Azad also reiterated concern over development work in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that while central projects were progressing, state-level initiatives were “completely halted”.

“Development by the local administration is negligible. Labourers could easily be employed through basic infrastructure projects like roads, water, and power supply. I have visited 15 districts. People say that not even a footpath is being built. If there is a government, why is nothing visible on the ground?” he asked.

The former leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha also criticised the repeated disruptions of Parliament proceedings.

Recalling his tenure, Azad said, “I have always supported the functioning of Parliament. Even when Lok Sabha was being disrupted, during my time as leader of the opposition, Rajya Sabha would continue its normal proceedings.”

On Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks questioning the Election Commission’s credibility, Azad refused to comment, calling it a matter between the Congress leader, the poll panel, and the government.

Regarding the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post of vice-president, Azad said he met him recently and believed that the decision was prompted by health concerns.

“I have known him for 40 to 50 years. He has cited health reasons for his resignation. I cannot say for sure whether there was any other reason. Maybe his health is genuinely not well, and that is why he stepped down,” Azad said.

Pushing for long-delayed elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Azad said panchayat, municipal, and local body polls could generate vital employment at the grassroots level and must be conducted soon.

On internal developments within the DPAP, he acknowledged that some former ministers and lawmakers had switched sides, calling it part of India’s political culture, but said the party’s grassroots support base has grown steadily.

Reacting to Farooq Abdullah’s demand for the resignation of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha over the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, Azad said that such lapses had occurred during the tenure of other leaders as well.

“Why are they forgetting those incidents now?” he asked.

Operation Sindoor Targeted Terrorists, Not Pakistani Civilians: Ghulam Nabi Azad Clarifies During Bahrain Visit

Gh nabi azad

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday said that Operation Sindoor launched by India in response to the Pahalgam terror attack was not intended to be against people in Pakistan, but against the terrorist infrastructure in the neighbouring country and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

“Operation Sindoor was not intended to be against the people of Pakistan but against the terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK. I congratulate our armed forces that none of the civilians of Pakistan were killed, as only terrorists were killed, and some family members of terrorists. But the sad part is that Pakistan blindly fired in our border areas, and they intentionally attacked our civilians,” Azad, who is part of an all-party delegation led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Baijayant Panda, told ANI.

He said that even after “trying to have good relations with neighbours”, India has faced terrorist attacks from the other side of the border.

“We are happy to meet the Indian diaspora; they came in large numbers. Be it any government, all our prime ministers have always tried to have good relations with our neighbours, including Pakistan. They always held talks with the Pakistan leadership, but after every such initiative, India faced terrorist attacks from the other side of the border,” Azad said.

Meanwhile, Panda said that the “changed doctrine” of India to deal with terrorism will impose a cost on Pakistan.

He further stated that Pakistan has been fostering terrorism for many decades and discussions were held with Indian diaspora leaders on how India’s changed doctrine was going to impose a cost on Pakistan.

“They are, of course, aware of the situation, and we gave them a lot of facts and figures about how Pakistan has been fostering terrorism for so many decades, and our changed doctrine that we will impose a cost on Pakistan,” Panda told ANI.

Panda, leading a multi-party delegation to Bahrain, praised the Indian community residing on foreign soil and said that they represent the voice of 140 crore Indians and the country’s growing “soft power”.

The delegation, consisting of BJP MPs Panda, Nishikant Dubey, Phangnon Konyak, Rekha Sharma, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Satnam Singh Sandhu, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and former foreign secretary Harsh Shringla, will now visit Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Algeria. Hilly areas to receive massive developmental douses, if elected to power: Ghulam Nabi Azad

Ramban Jan 02 : Democratic Progressive Azad Party chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday said that the time has come for people to differentiate between those who worked for the socio-economic empowerment of the people and those who have been disempowering people systematically.

Azad said that in politics people don’t choose its representatives for mosque or temple committees. They choose here a representative for good governance who can work for the common people irrespective of caste, creed and colour. “When you vote in the elections remember you have to vote for a competent candidate since it is the matter of governance so the faith shall not come as an obstacle for you that would lead to poor decision making on your part. Because you are not electing a head for mosque or temple,” Azad told a gathering at Rajgarh, Ramban. Azad said that people over the past several years have faced immense economic crisis since the land rights under Roshni act were taken back which has come as a major setback for the empowerment of people.

Azad said that he understands the needs and requirements of people especially of those residing in hilly areas. “The life of our mothers and sisters is not as easy as we understand in hilly areas where they fight for day to day survival. When my party forms the government in Jammu and Kashmir these areas and people would receive special attention so that they too have easy and comfortable life,” he said. Azad said that any nation to grow needs to strengthen its secular bond and it is the duty of people to ensure this bond is growing and thriving. “While we have a strong bond with each other and confine our belief system to ourselves, it would provide you an opportunity to choose a best representative who can work for the entire humanity,” the former chief minister said.

Azad said that the hilly terrains where the life is difficult will be of its prime importance and he would push massive developmental douses for such areas. Among others who were present on the occasion were G.M.Saroori Vice Chairman, Gen Secretary Ab Majeed Wani, Gen Secretary Anita Thakur, Chief Spokesperson Salman Nizami, P.R.Manhas Zonal President, Sunita Arora Spokesperson, Arun Singh Raju Secretary, Thakur Dharam Chand Distt President, Provincial Gen Secretaries Shakeel Singh Bhagat, Vishal Chopra, Distt President Doda  Asif Gattu, Amin Bhatt, Ch Mohd Farooq, Farooq Ah Ganai, Girdarilal Bhau, Dr Asif Khanday, Shahrukh Bhatti, Aqib Khanday, Sheikh Shabir and others.(KNS)
