Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Reaffirms Demand for Jammu and Kashmir Statehood, Criticizes Delay in Restoring Special Status

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday reiterated the right to statehood for J-K and said that if the Bharatiya Janata Party is worried about the Jammu and Kashmir then they should talk about the statehood.

“The BJP should talk about the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir if they are so worried about the state. Let’s not expect them to do anything else. This is our special status, which is our constitutional guarantee, whatever they contested in the Assembly and opposed it. When the resolution came, the Assembly passed it.,” Omar Abdullah said.

In November last year, the Legislative Assembly passed a resolution demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370. The resolution was opposed by the BJP, which holds 29 seats in the assembly.

Earlier today, Omar Abdullah Mentioning that the Supreme Court has said to restore the statehood “as soon as possible,” CM Abdullah stated that one year is enough for this “as soon as possible.”

Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister said, “We have been in power for more than 2 months now. It took us some time to understand the functioning of a government in a UT… It was easier than anticipated… We stand by the promises we made before the elections because of which people gave us the mandate to form the government… It will be important to us to change the status of J&K. I hope that the status of UT is a temporary phase for J&K.”

“The people of J&K participated in the assembly elections in good numbers and they should get something. The central government had promised to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir and we hope it will not take much time. One year ago, even the Supreme Court in its verdict had said that statehood of Jammu and Kashmir should be restored as soon as possible. Now that a year has been completed so we believe that 1 year is enough for this ‘as soon as possible’. We are here to serve people and fulfil their expectations of development and governance….” he added.

Notably, the restoration of Article 370, the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, and the implementation of the autonomy resolution were key promises in the National Conference’s manifesto for the Jammu and Kashmir elections.

The first session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, which concluded on November 8, also witnessed uproar over the issue of Article 370. (ANI)

From 10 AM the demand starts recovering as the system was brought back online & the damage repaired.

The Chief Minister gave a special mention to the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), saying, “Kudos to @kpdclofficial for their work on the ground.”

Abdullah also applauded the Publics Works Department (Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department) for their efficiency in clearing snow-covered roads and lanes. “They moved quickly to open the main roads and then, as per the schedule of priority, continued their efforts. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Links Uninterrupted Power Supply to Full Metering in Kashmir Amid Power Cuts

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah

‘Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Thursday linked uninterrupted power supply to complete metering in Kashmir, amid widespread unscheduled power cuts across the Valley.

“The complaints of unscheduled power cuts will continue because there is pressure on the system,” the CM told reporters here. “The problem is that some people have a (load) agreement of four bulbs, but they use four heaters instead… Meter is the best way to address this, the more metering we have, the fewer power cuts there will be.”He expressed optimism about achieving full metering coverage.

“I hope we take J&K to 100 percent metering so that we supply 24-hour electricity. God willing, we will achieve that very soon,” CM Omar said. The Power Development Department (PDD) has registered significant gains in revenue collection, reaching Rs 2294 crore by October 2024.

Officials attribute this surge to smart meter installations under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP), with 6.16 lakh meters installed so far across both phases.

October alone contributed Rs 341 crore to the total collection for the financial year 2024-25.Addressing winter preparedness amid harsh weather conditions, CM Omar acknowledged the challenges.“As far as winter preparedness is concerned, there is an intense cold, and there has been a dry spell. I pray to God for snowfall so that this dry spell ends,” he said.

The CM outlined his administration’s priorities saying: “Our endeavour is to minimise the power cuts, and ensure water supply even as pipes freeze due to the low temperature. Despite difficulties, our endeavour is that the government functions smoothly.”On governance issues, he said there are limitations to the Union Territory status.

“There are several issues which cannot be resolved rapidly, there are issues which cannot be dealt with under the UT and for those we have to get our State back,” CM Omar said. “But, attempts are being made to at least listen to their problems and assure them that it is their own elected government and there is no issue which we will not listen to.”

Regarding tourism prospects, he stressed efforts to establish J&K as a year-round destination.“We are hopeful that people will come and for that, we need snowfall in places like Sonamarg, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. When there is snowfall, more tourists will come,” he said.

Following his surprise hospital visits a day earlier, the CM reported mixed findings.“The situation in the hospitals is better, but there are complaints from the patients that everything is fine during the day but no one is to be seen during the night,” he said.“I made a surprise visit during the day, someday, I will make a surprise visit during the night,” CM Omar said.”
