Army Officer Booked for ‘Murderous Assault’ on SpiceJet Staff Over Baggage Dispute at Srinagar Airport

A senior Army officer has been charged with “murderous assault” following a violent altercation with SpiceJet ground staff at Srinagar Airport on July 26, 2025. The confrontation, reportedly triggered by a baggage dispute, left four airline employees severely injured—one with a spinal fracture and another with serious facial injuries.

According to a statement issued by SpiceJet Airlines, the officer was scheduled to fly on flight SG-386 from Srinagar to Delhi. At the boarding gate, he was informed that his cabin baggage—two pieces weighing a combined 16 kilograms—exceeded the airline’s permissible cabin limit of 7 kg.

SpiceJet claims its staff politely asked the officer to pay for the excess baggage. However, the officer allegedly refused to comply and forcefully entered the aerobridge without completing the boarding formalities. This breach of protocol prompted intervention by a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official, who escorted him back to the gate area.

What followed was a shocking act of violence. According to SpiceJet’s official statement, the officer launched an unprovoked and brutal physical assault on four employees. “Our staff members suffered a spinal fracture and serious jaw injuries after being attacked with punches, repeated kicks, and even a queue stand,” the airline said.

“One SpiceJet employee collapsed unconscious on the floor, but the passenger continued kicking and hitting the fainted employee,” the statement added. Another staff member who bent down to help the unconscious colleague was kicked in the jaw, resulting in heavy bleeding from the nose and mouth.

All four injured staff members were immediately rushed to the hospital and are currently undergoing treatment for what the airline has called “grievous injuries.” SpiceJet has since filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the local police and has initiated procedures to place the accused officer on India’s no-fly list.

The airline further stated:
“SpiceJet has written to the Ministry of Civil Aviation appraising them about the murderous assault on its staff and has requested appropriate action against the passenger.”

CCTV footage of the incident has been handed over to the authorities as part of the investigation.

In its closing remarks, SpiceJet condemned the violence in strong terms:
“SpiceJet strongly condemns any act of violence against its employees and will pursue this matter to its fullest legal and regulatory conclusion.”

The incident has sparked serious concerns over passenger behavior, aviation security, and the safety of airline personnel at airports across the country.
