According to officials, GMC Jammu has received 12 additional seats, increasing its postgraduate intake from 242 to 254. Meanwhile, GMC Srinagar has secured 18 new seats, raising its total intake from 277 to 295.
The expansion has also introduced new postgraduate specialisations at both institutions. GMC Jammu has received PG seats in Respiratory Medicine, while GMC Srinagar has secured postgraduate seats in Forensic Medicine for the first time.
At GMC Jammu, the additional seats have been allocated across five disciplines. MD Pathology has recorded the highest increase, with seats rising from 18 to 23. Paediatrics seats have increased from 18 to 20, while Pharmacology has gone up from 10 to 12.
Similarly, Microbiology seats have increased from seven to eight, and two new seats have been introduced in Respiratory Medicine.
At GMC Srinagar, the additional intake covers seven disciplines. MD Anatomy seats have increased from 12 to 14, Pathology from eight to 10, Pharmacology from seven to nine, and Physiology from eight to 10.
The college has also received three PG seats in Forensic Medicine for the first time. In surgical specialisations, MS Orthopaedics seats have increased from 16 to 20, while MS ENT seats have risen from six to nine.
The increase in postgraduate medical seats is expected to strengthen specialist medical education in Jammu and Kashmir while creating more opportunities for medical graduates to pursue advanced training within the Union Territory.
Officials said the expansion would also help widen the availability of specialised academic and clinical training at the two government medical institutions, potentially reducing the need for students to seek postgraduate opportunities outside Jammu and Kashmir.
However, maintaining the quality of medical education will require adequate faculty, clinical exposure and supporting infrastructure to accommodate the increased student intake.
The latest expansion marks another step towards strengthening postgraduate medical education and specialist healthcare training in Jammu and Kashmir.
