SRINAGAR: A Srinagar-based software engineer, Mudasir Ali, has launched WildPing, a free, community-driven platform designed to alert residents about wildlife sightings and help reduce human-wildlife conflict in Jammu and Kashmir. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Available at wildping.org, the platform allows users to report sightings and receive alerts when reported wildlife activity falls within areas they have marked for monitoring.

A Personal Mission Inspired by Loss

WildPing has a deeply personal story behind it. Ali developed the platform in memory of his late mother, who lost her life in an attack by a wild animal.

The incident highlighted the importance of timely warnings when wild animals enter residential areas. Ali developed WildPing to help residents share information quickly and make safer decisions.

Ali has also pointed to changes in wildlife habitats and the easy availability of food near human settlements as factors that can bring wild animals closer to people.

The platform aims to promote awareness and safer coexistence between people and wildlife, rather than create unnecessary fear.

How Does WildPing Work?

WildPing works as a browser-based progressive web application, allowing users to access it without downloading a conventional app from an app store.

Its main features include:

  • Custom watch zones: Users can mark areas they want to monitor, including homes, farms, schools and regular travel routes.
  • Community reporting: People who spot a wild animal can submit a report by selecting the animal type and confirming its general location.
  • Location-based alerts: Users can receive notifications when a reported sighting falls within their selected watch zones, helping them take precautions.

These alerts could help residents keep children indoors, avoid potentially risky routes and seek guidance from the relevant authorities when necessary.

A Free Platform for Public Safety

WildPing has been developed as a public service and is available free of charge, without subscription fees or advertisements, according to the information provided about the initiative.

The platform is intended to supplement existing wildlife monitoring and emergency response systems, not replace official Wildlife Department control rooms or rescue teams.

For communities living near forests and other wildlife habitats, timely information can be valuable in reducing the risk of unexpected encounters.

WildPing represents a community-led effort to address this challenge by making wildlife sighting information easier to share. Its practical impact will depend on timely and accurate reports, reliable alerts and responsible use by residents.

Residents should continue to follow official safety advisories and contact the relevant authorities during wildlife emergencies.
