Two years ago, Saniya Zehra shocked many when she decided to leave her promising medical career to pursue beekeeping. While most people viewed this as a step backwards, she saw it as an opportunity to turn a family tradition into a modern, sustainable business.
“I gave importance to beekeeping, which was our family business,” she says. “While others thought I was giving up a prestigious career, I saw the hidden potential in apiculture.”

From Small Beginnings to a Thriving Business
With a clear vision and determination, Zehra started her journey with just 35 bee colonies. She received support through the government’s HADP scheme, which helped her expand her operations. Today, she manages a significant number of bee colonies, making her one of Kashmir’s most successful apiculturists.
Her business is not limited to honey production. She has diversified into pollen, royal jelly, and other bee products, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. This approach has helped her create multiple revenue streams and build a strong market presence.
The Migratory Nature of Her Bees
One of the unique aspects of Zehra’s business is its migratory nature. Her bee colonies do not stay in one place but travel across different states, following the blooming seasons.
“Our bees start in Kashmir’s saffron fields, where they help with pollination while producing saffron-infused honey. From there, we move to Sonamarg, Sangri, and Batin, each offering different floral sources. Later, we travel to Ganga Nagar in Rajasthan and then to Punjab,” she explains.
This nomadic approach not only increases honey production but also supports agricultural pollination in different regions, benefiting farmers as well.

Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs
Kashmir faces high unemployment rates, and Zehra’s success story serves as an inspiration, especially for young women. She actively mentors others and encourages them to explore agricultural entrepreneurship.
“There is a lot of unemployment among youth today,” she says. “Many don’t realise that beekeeping is a viable career. It’s not just about honey; it’s about agriculture, business management, and sustainability. These skills can change lives.”
She also works to clear misconceptions about the industry. “You don’t need to own land to start beekeeping,” she emphasizes. “You can rent land or collaborate with farmers who need pollination services. Plus, with government support, the initial investment is minimal.”
Government Support and Opportunities
Government initiatives have played a crucial role in Zehra’s journey. She highlights the financial assistance available to aspiring beekeepers.
“The government provides an 80% subsidy, meaning young entrepreneurs only need to contribute 20% of the initial investment. This is a huge opportunity that more people should take advantage of,” she says.
Local agricultural officials have recognised her success and are keen to support similar initiatives. “We provide technical guidance and permissions to improve the honey business,” says one official. “Zehra’s story shows how agriculture can create sustainable livelihoods.”
Balancing Tradition and Modernity
While Zehra embraces modern business practices, she also values traditional knowledge. She believes that young people need to find a balance between technology and real-world skills.
“There is nothing wrong with being content creators,” she says. “But many young people are so focused on digital fame that they overlook real-world opportunities. Agriculture and beekeeping are fields with immense potential.”
