Despite Improvement in Night Temperature Kashmir Valley Remains in the Grip of Cold Wave

The cold wave continues to tighten its hold over the Kashmir Valley, with no significant change expected in weather conditions until December 26, according to the Meteorological Department in Srinagar.

The latest data from the Indian Meteorological Department indicates that Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -4.5°C on Wednesday. This marks a slight improvement compared to the previous night, which was even colder.

Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination, experienced a low of -5.8°C today. Although still bitterly cold, this temperature shows a marginal rise from earlier readings.

In contrast, Kokernag recorded a significant drop, with temperatures plummeting to -2.8°C, highlighting the varying intensity of the cold across the region.

Looking ahead, the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has forecasted a prolonged cold wave over the plains of Jammu and Kashmir from December 18 to December 22. Residents are advised to prepare for continued harsh weather conditions as the valley remains enveloped in freezing temperatures.

WD likely to Bring Snowfall on Dec 22 as Moderate to Strong Western Disturbance May Hit J&K

While a severe cold wave gripped Kashmir on Saturday, there are likely chances of snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on December 22 as moderate to strong Western Disturbance (WD) would hit J&K.

Weather by Umar, an independent weather forecaster, in a post on X said that a fresh spell of snowfall is expected in J&K on December 22 as a moderate to strong WD is likely to impact J&K.

“Snow loading… 22 December for J&K as moderate to strong Western Disturbance is expected,” he posted on X.

The disturbance is expected to bring widespread snowfall, particularly in higher reaches, while lower areas may experience snow.On Saturday, Kashmir continued to reel under a severe cold wave as the minimum temperature dropped across most parts of the Valley, intensifying the winter chill.

The Meteorological Department (MeT) has forecast a further dip in temperatures over the next three days, with cold wave conditions likely to prevail at many places in Kashmir.In Srinagar, the minimum temperature dropped to minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, marking a sharp decline of more than two notches from the previous night.

Gulmarg ski resort recorded a low of minus 7.6 degrees Celsius, though it was two degrees higher than the previous night.Pahalgam health resort recorded a freezing low of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest place in Kashmir.

Other areas also shivered under sub-zero temperatures, with Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, recording minus 5.6 degrees Celsius, Kupwara in north Kashmir minus 4.7 degrees Celsius, and Kokernag in south Kashmir minus 4.2 degrees Celsius.Tourist hotspot Sonamarg froze at minus 9.6 degrees Celsius while other parts of south Kashmir also recorded bone-chilling lows.

Shopian recorded minus 8.3 degrees Celsius, Pulwama dipped to minus 7.9 degrees Celsius, Anantnag registered minus 7.7 degrees Celsius, and Kulgam shivered at minus 5.9 degrees Celsius.

Ganderbal recorded minimum temperatures of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius and Budgam minus 5.5 degrees Celsius.North Kashmir saw similarly frigid conditions, with Bandipora logging minus 4.2 degrees Celsius.The MeT has predicted dry weather until December 21, but temperatures are expected to drop further, aggravating the cold wave across the region.

In the Jammu division, the mercury stayed above the freezing point in most areas.Ramban recorded the highest minimum temperature at 14 degrees Celsius, followed by Katra at 7.5 degrees Celsius, Poonch at 4.9 degrees Celsius, and Banihal at 4.9 degrees Celsius.However, Jammu city recorded a chilly 3.6 degrees Celsius.

Several other areas in the division experienced sub-zero temperatures, with Bhaderwah recording minus 0.6 degrees Celsius, Samba 0.4 degrees Celsius, Udhampur 0.7 degrees Celsius, and Paddar in Kishtwar registering the coldest temperature at minus 5.6 degrees Celsius.

In the cold desert region of Ladakh, freezing temperatures persisted as Kargil recorded a bone-numbing minus 14.3 degrees Celsius while Leh reported minus 13 degrees Celsius.

Parts of Kashmir valley, in north and southern districts, received season’s first snowfall on Thursday while some tourist resorts like Sonamarg and Pahalgam were blanketed by around 10 inches of fresh snowfall.

“As predicted, light snowfall was generally observed in some plains during the early morning hours, while some higher reaches have recorded a heavy spell of snow,” read a post on X by an independent weather forecaster.

He said that weather will remain dry in J&K during the next 12 hours, with chances of rain and snow in some areas. “Overall, no major spell is expected,” he said.

From tomorrow onwards, mostly dry weather is expected for a week, said the forecaster on his X page, ‘Kashmir Weather’.Reports said that Heerpora in south Kashmir’s Shopian district received a heavy spell of snow.As per footage shared on social media by the residents, fresh snowfall was recorded in Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Tangmarg.

Baramulla in north Kashmir also saw the season’s first snowfall, with authorities pressing machinery into service to clear snow from Narbal-Baramulla highway.

As temperatures fall below freezing, the cold wave continues to spread across the Kashmir Valley, affecting regular activities. Temperatures in Srinagar Dip to -3⁰ C.

Tourists in Srinagar were greeted by an unexpected chill in the air. A tourist and photographer Adil from Jodhpur, Rajasthan, who travelled to Kashmir for a pre-wedding shoot said, “The weather has been colder than we expected, but it’s perfect for a shoot.”

Speaking to ANI Adil said, “If you’re not from Kashmir, the experience is completely different. If you’re from Jammu or here, you’re familiar with nature. But for us, coming from Rajasthan, it’s much colder.”

“This was my fourth trip to Kashmir, and I recommend you visit both during the winter and summer seasons to see nature. “I would suggest coming here in both seasons to see Kashmir at its best,” he added.

Another tourist, Lalit from Jalore district in Rajasthan, shared his experience, “The weather is good here, and Dal Lake is absolutely beautiful. If you’re visiting, don’t miss out on a Shikara ride–it’s a must.”

On December 10, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted a partly overcast sky with a maximum temperature of 10 degrees C and a low temperature of about -2 degrees C. The residents and tourists are responding to the biting cold by wearing heavy winter clothes and relying on various heating methods.

In the winter Srinagar offers both a magical experience for tourists with its blend of cultural traditions, scenic landscapes, and snow clad mountains. Meanwhile, as winter chill sets in for the season, Shimla–the state capital of Himachal Pradesh–lies covered in a blanket of snow.

Earlier on Sunday, scenic heights of Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh were shrouded in white after the district received snowfall. The Machil sector in JK’s Kupwara district also received a fresh spell of snowfall on Sunday. The charm of a snow-covered region lies not only in its visual appeal but also in the tranquil atmosphere it creates, offering a sense of solitude, wonder, and the timeless beauty of nature.

In addition, the IMD forecast severe weather on December 11 and the days that follow, issuing a cold wave warning for a number of regions in northern and central India.

Isolated regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, West Uttar Pradesh, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Muzaffarabad are expected to see cold wave conditions on December 11, per the IMD’s press release.

Regions such as Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Madhya Pradesh have also received similar warnings, and conditions are predicted to remain there from December 11 to 14. The cold wave is expected to continue to affect West Uttar Pradesh until December 13. (ANI)

Furthermore, Gulmarg, a famous ski-resort, was the second coldest place, where the mercury settled at minus 9.0 degree Celsius.Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination, recorded a low of minus 8.4 degree Celsius while Shopian in South Kashmir recorded a low of minus 8.5 degree Celsius.

Also, Qazigund, a gateway of Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 6.4 degree Celsius while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded minus 4.5 degree Celsius. Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.0 degree Celsius.

The higher reaches of Kashmir Valley received fresh snowfall on Sunday evening, leading to a drop in temperatures across the region, officials said.

An official told that snowfall began late Sunday afternoon in the higher reaches of the valley, including the famous ski resort Gulmarg, as well as Gurez, Karnah, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and other areas.

The official said traffic movement on Mughal, Gurez and Sinthan roads has been halted due to fresh snowfall. “Travellers are advised to avoid these routes until the roads are cleared and deemed safe for travel,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department had forecast generally cloudy weather with light rain in some areas of Jammu Division and light rain or snow in the higher reaches of Kashmir Division from the evening of 8th to the morning of 9th December.

It said the weather is expected to remain dry from December 10 to 11, followed by more cloudy conditions with light snow in isolated higher reaches on December 12.

“From December 13 to 17, dry weather is predicted,” the MeT added.

Furthermore, authorities have issued advisories for safe travel on the Gulmarg-Tangmarg road. “Only 4×4 vehicles with anti-skid chains will be allowed due to slippery conditions,” the advisory said, adding that the LMVs with no more than 10 seats will be permitted to prevent jams.

“Registered anti-skid chain vendors will install chains at Rs 600 per pair. Tour operators and private vehicle owners are urged to park in designated spaces, and coat and boot vendors are prohibited from blocking roads to avoid traffic disruptions,” reads the advisory—(KNO)

The historic Mughal road was closed for traffic on Sunday after fresh snowfall along the historic thoroughfare.

After recording the coldest night of season, the minimum temperature has improved across the Valley while as the weatherman here has predicted light rains and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir for the next two days.

Shopian in South Kashmir was the coldest place where the mercury settled at minus 4.5 degree Celsius.

In Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the night temperature has improved as against previous night’s minus 4.1 degree Celsius, it has settled at minus 2.0 degree Celsius, which is the third lowest of the season so far.

As per the details, Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination and Bandipora were the second coldest places at minus 4.3 degree Celsius while in Gulmarg, a ski-resort, the mercury settled at minus 3.6 degree Celsius. Similar night temperature was recorded at Kupwara in north Kashmir as well.

Qazigund, a gateway of Kashmir recorded a low of minus 2.4 degree Celsius while Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.2 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, Director Meteorological department (MeT) has predicted generally cloudy weather with the possibility of light rain over few areas of plains and hilly areas of Jammu division & light rain and snow in higher reaches over few places of Kashmir division during late evening of 8th to 9th forenoon.

He added that the weather would remain generally dry on December 10 and 11 while there is a possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches on December 12.

From December 13 to 17, the weather would remain generally dry.

Moreover, as per the MeT’s forecast, the tourists, travelers and transporters have been advised to follow administration and traffic advisory—(KNO)
