Mehbooba Mufti Urges Judicial Reforms, Calls Plight of J&K Prisoners a Humanitarian Crisis

Mehbooba Mufti

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Monday made an emotional appeal for judicial reforms in Jammu and Kashmir, describing the plight of prisoners lodged in jails across India as a “humanitarian crisis” rather than a political issue.

Speaking to reporters outside the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, the former Chief Minister said, “Courts are our last hope.” She urged the judiciary to intervene and ensure justice, compassion, and constitutional safeguards for hundreds of Kashmiri youth incarcerated in distant states.

“Behind every number and every case, there is a story — a mother waiting for her son, a father growing old in silence, a child sleeping each night without knowing when their parent will return,” Mehbooba said, calling the situation deeply painful and unjust.

The PDP chief stressed that the issue transcends politics and must be addressed as a question of humanity and fairness. She said the young men jailed outside J&K are “not statistics but sons of this soil” who deserve dignity, fair trials, and an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Mehbooba Mufti called upon the Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court to take note of systemic flaws in the region’s criminal justice system. She proposed a series of reforms including:

Local Lodgement: Prisoners from J&K should be kept in local prisons so that families can visit them and trials can proceed fairly.

Speedy Trials: She emphasized that “justice delayed is justice denied,” urging the judiciary to uphold Article 21 of the Constitution guaranteeing the right to life and liberty.

Transparency in Trials: The accused, she said, must be allowed to attend every hearing to ensure transparency.

Bail, Not Jail: She reiterated the principle that detention should be an exception, not the norm.

Remission, Parole & Furlough: Mehbooba said these are legal rights that must not be treated as “political favours.”

Medical Bail: Should be considered a constitutional safeguard for the ailing.

Implementation of Jail Manuals: Prisons, she said, should reform lives rather than destroy them.

“For years, our youth have been languishing in prisons in Agra, Bareilly, Haryana and other states,” she said. “Their families neither have the means nor the strength to travel such long distances. Trials are delayed, hearings are held in their absence, and justice remains out of reach. This is not the idea of justice our Constitution envisions.”

Reaffirming her belief in the judicial system, Mehbooba expressed optimism that the courts would ultimately uphold justice and human dignity.

“We have faith in our judiciary and hope in our courts. I believe the day is not far when justice will prevail, and our courts will ensure the ‘Ghar Wapsi’ — the return of all J&K prisoners to their homeland,” she concluded.

Mir said that no factory has been set up in Bihar in the last 20 years, claiming that all new industries have gone to Gujarat.

Speaking to ANI, Ghulam Ahmad Mir said, “People in Bihar want to end the 20-year rule, as it’s a long time for any coalition or leader… Nitish Kumar and the BJP government have failed to stop youth migration or create jobs within Bihar… All new industries have gone to Gujarat… However, no factory has been set up in Bihar in 20 years… The youth are now seeking change, and a government of the INDIA bloc will be formed. Tejashwi, a young leader, will lead Bihar to prosperity.”

A day earlier, the NDA members in Bihar jointly released their manifesto ‘Sankalp Patra’ in Patna on Friday in the high-stakes assembly elections.

In the manifesto, the NDA has promised to provide over one crore government jobs and employment opportunities, conduct a skills census to provide skills-based employment, and establish mega skill centers in every district, transforming Bihar into a ‘Global Skill Training’ Centre.

The NDA has promised to make 1 crore women ‘Lakhpati Didi’.

According to the manifesto, the NDA promises to give Rs 10 lakh to various occupational groups belonging to the extremely backward classes.
Voting for the 243-seat Bihar Assembly will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11. The results will be declared on November 14. (ANI)

Ruhullah Mehdi Hits Back at Omar Abdullah, Says Kashmir Faces “Existential Crisis”

Aga Ruhullah

National Conference, MP  Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Monday fired back at Omar Abdullah, saying there is “no time to fight a personal war” and insisting the focus must remain on what he called an existential crisis in Kashmir.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

In a sharply worded response, Mehdi said the region is facing far graver problems than intra-party rivalries. “Kashmir is fighting an existential crisis right now,” he said, adding that “thousands of our youth are locked up in jails.” Pointing to what he described as the unanswered plight of detainees, Mehdi asked: “Do they know the address of those thousands of youth who are still in jail? Without trials.”

Mehdi also took aim at what he called symbolic gestures by the NC leadership, accusing Omar Abdullah of offering Kashmiri shawls to BJP leaders.

Rejecting efforts to make the dispute personal, he said his own identity was irrelevant. “Rohullah is not a person. I have no importance… I have no status,” he said. “There is no importance of Ruhullah’s identity. There is no importance of anyone else’s identity. The importance is of that hope, that agenda, that responsibility, that mandate which the people have given us.”

Mehdi repeatedly challenged the National Conference to account for promises made to the electorate, including commitments on jobs and protections for culture and religion. “The fight of 370 is the fight of our existence. It is the promise of the National Conference in the last election,” he said. “In 2024, it was promised that in 5 years, we will give 100,000 jobs. Can someone give me that address? The 20,000 jobs that have been given in the last year — can you tell me that address?”

He also demanded answers over what he described as “attacks on our religious beliefs, on our cultural identity,” asking where the party’s fight on those fronts could be seen. “What was the fight against those attacks? Can you tell me its address?”

Mehdi concluded by saying he would not shy away from a personal battle if forced to, but that such egos were secondary to the larger crisis. “If someone wants to make it an ego issue, I will fight on that level too. But my identity has no importance… I don’t care,” he said.

The exchange comes amid heightened tensions in the Valley and renewed public scrutiny of political pledges; Mehdi framed his rebuttal as a call to return to promises and to place detainees and constitutional issues at the centre of political debate.

Sajad Gani Lone Accuses NC of Killing Merit, Launches Campaign Against Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Policy

Sajad Lone Criticises

Peoples Conference Chairman and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone on Saturday accused the National Conference (NC) of “killing merit” through its handling of reservations and alleged that Kashmiri candidates are being deliberately left out of government job opportunities.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, Lone, who is also MLA from Handwara, said his party will soon launch a “full-fledged campaign” against the ongoing reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

“This government is out to kill merit. Open merit has been buried. We are going to start a ground-level registration drive against this policy,” Lone said, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), warning that the system “is pushing Kashmir towards a major disaster.”

He said his party will take to the streets if needed. “We will go door to door. If hunger strikes or mass protests are required, we will not hesitate. Enough is enough,” he added.

Lone also launched a strong attack on the National Conference, accusing it of being “hand in glove” with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the recent Rajya Sabha elections.

“These two or three extra votes had no room for that candidate number four,” Lone said. “Even if there had been no cross-voting, that candidate would still have lost. All the cross-voting was done by the National Conference. They did it themselves.”

He claimed seven NC members “directly gifted their votes to the BJP.” “It was a fixed match,” Lone said. “This is the same party that accused others of being with the BJP. And today, they are sitting in BJP’s lap.”

Lone said the NC’s actions have exposed its claims of being an opposition force. “Our people must open their eyes and see how they were deceived. Even if BJP is not in power directly, their preferred party is ruling now,” he said.

Criticising NC vice president Omar Abdullah, Lone said the Congress was deliberately denied a winnable Rajya Sabha seat. “They offered Congress a losing seat, number four. Omar Abdullah was asking, ‘Why don’t they contest for number four?’ They wanted it this way,” he said.

Lone argued that the Congress, as a national party, should have been given priority. “A national party carries a different weight on the national stage. Regional parties do not,” he said.

He further accused the NC’s past Rajya Sabha members of failing to deliver in Delhi. “None of them brought anything substantial back. They only went there to get small personal favors,” Lone said.

Calling the NC’s political approach “submissive before Delhi,” Lone said, “For seventy years, this has been the story. They go to Delhi saying ‘beat us but let us weep.’ They ask Delhi to tighten the stick while pretending to resist here.”

On the abrogation of Article 370, Lone alleged that “midnight meetings” between Delhi and NC leaders before August 5, 2019, were full of “betrayal after betrayal.”

He urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to “wake up” and recognize what he described as “a long-standing political deception.”

“The BJP ensures the victory of its own candidates through these same people. They abuse BJP during elections to fool voters, but they are working together behind the scenes,” Lone said

The Peoples Conference chief said he was “grateful to Allah” for staying away from what he termed “this entire corrupt process.” “I thank Almighty Allah that I abstained from voting, otherwise today all fingers would have been pointed at me,” he said—(KNO)

Mosques Must Stay Under Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s Supervision, Waheed Parra Backs NC in RS Polls

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislator Waheed Parra on Friday said that party president Mehbooba Mufti has decided that PDP legislators will cast their votes in favour of the National Conference (NC) candidates in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Parra said the decision was taken after the National Conference assured its support to two key legislations in the Assembly — the Land Bill and the Daily Wagers Regularization Bill. He said the understanding between the two parties was aimed at safeguarding the interests of common people and ensuring that the long-pending bills are passed without political obstruction.

“The PDP has decided to vote for the NC candidates as the party leadership was assured of support for the Land and Daily Wagers Bills in the Assembly,” Parra said.He also expressed support for the role of clerics in managing religious assets, stating that “clerics have every right to be the custodians of Waqf properties.” Parra emphasized that mosques should remain under the supervision of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, describing him as a spiritual authority respected across Kashmir.

On the arrest of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik, Parra termed it “illegal and politically motivated,” asserting that the PDP stands firmly against his detention and will continue to demand his unconditional release. [KNT]

Sunil Sharma Claims BJP Will Win All Four Rajya Sabha Seats, Calls Congress ‘NC’s Puppet’

Terming Congress as ‘puppet of NC’, Sharma said that it can never happen that the party will not support NC. “Congress has been following Dr Farooq Abdullah. There is no value of Tariq Karra’s letters to the Congress high command as the leadership value words of the Sheikh family,” he said.

Congress Skips NC Meeting, Awaits Central Leadership’s Signal on Alliance Talks: Tariq Hameed Karra

Hamid kara

The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief Tariq Hameed Karra on Wednesday said that they have decided not to attend the meeting called by the National Conference on Wednesday, adding it will await directions from the party’s central leadership before taking any decision on alliance discussions.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channe

Speaking to reporters, Karra said that the Congress will not participate in the meeting convened by NC president Dr. Farooq Abdullah. “Unless there is a clear signal from our central leadership in Delhi, we will not attend any meeting called by the National Conference,” Karra said.

Earlier in the day, the Congress Legislative Party met in Srinagar to discuss political, administrative, and economic issues ahead of the autumn session of the J&K Assembly scheduled to begin on Thursday. Karra said the meeting remained incomplete and would continue on Thursday.

“The members of the Legislative Party expressed their views and opinions, which have been formally sent to our central leadership in Delhi for guidance,” he said, adding that the party would take its next step only after consulting the high command.

Karra said that the Congress, being a national party, must act in accordance with the directions of its central leadership. “The suggestions and sentiments expressed by our legislators have been shared with the high command. We will move forward only after their guidance,” he said.

The JKPCC chief added that recent political developments in the Union Territory had prompted the party to review its position carefully. “Some important events over the past week have compelled us to consult the central leadership once again before taking part in any alliance discussions,” he added.

Karra also said the Congress Legislative Party was united in its commitment to uphold democratic values and to effectively represent the people’s concerns in the Assembly. “Our confidence in the process remains strong, and we are determined to use the Assembly platform responsibly and with respect,” he said.

Meanwhile, NC leaders Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah had reached the Radisson Hotel in Rajbagh to preside over the meeting of alliance legislators aimed at chalking out a joint strategy for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections and the Assembly session. However, Congress’s absence highlighted growing uncertainty within the alliance over seat-sharing and legislative coordination.

The Congress meeting will resume on Thursday after the leadership in Delhi provides further instructions, Karra said.(KNS)

Centre, Ladakh Delegation Resume Talks on Statehood, Sixth Schedule, and Revocation of NSA Against Sonam Wangchuk

Ladakh Statehood

In a major move to end the months-long stalemate, a delegation comprising members of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) on Wednesday resumed dialogue with the Centre, focusing on a four-point agenda– statehood for Ladakh, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, reservation safeguards, and the revocation of the National Security Act (NSA) imposed on activist Sonam Wangchuk.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channe

The issues were deliberated during an almost two-hour meeting between senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs and a nine-member delegation, which included three representatives each from the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), along with Ladakh MP Mohd Haneefa Jan.

Haneefa Jan, who was part of the nine-member delegation, told ANI that “the discussion primarily revolved around four major issues – statehood for Ladakh, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, reservation matters, and the revocation of the National Security Act (NSA) against climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.”

Haneefa said the talks were held in a positive atmosphere, with both sides showing willingness to continue engagement.

“We had a constructive discussion on all four points. There was mutual understanding on the need to safeguard Ladakh’s identity and ensure justice and fair representation for its people,” Haneefa said.

On the first two issues – statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion — the delegation reiterated that these were essential for protecting Ladakh’s land, culture, and employment rights. On the reservation issue, both sides agreed to hold further deliberations soon to arrive at a mutually acceptable formula ensuring fair opportunities for all communities.

The delegation also raised Sonam Wangchuk’s case, urging the government to withdraw the NSA imposed on him, terming it vital for restoring public trust and fostering consensus in the region.

The meeting came as part of renewed engagement after months of deadlock between the Centre and Ladakh’s two major socio-political coalitions — the LAB and the KDA. The dialogue resumed following the MHA’s October 17 announcement of a judicial inquiry into the September 24 Leh violence, which left four dead and over 80 injured, fulfilling one of the preconditions set by LAB and KDA to return to the table.

Haneefa described the meeting as “a positive step forward”, expressing optimism that continued dialogue on the four-point agenda would help chart a lasting solution for Ladakh’s constitutional and governance concerns.

On the meeting, Member of Kargil Democratic Alliance, Sajjad Hussain Kargili, said, “Our demand for the past six years has been democracy in Ladakh. A great solution for this is statehood in Ladakh… This issue can not be resolved in one or two meetings. It will take a process, and that process is ongoing. We discussed the implementation of a reservation policy in Ladakh.

We also talked about the release of detainees of the 24 September incident, which also includes Sonam Wangchuk. We have also asked for compensation for the people who died or were injured in that incident.”

The meeting assumes significance as the LAB had earlier announced on September 29 that it would stay away from talks with the high-powered MHA committee, originally scheduled for October 6, following the September 24 violence in Leh, which left four protesters dead, many injured, and dozens detained.

After nearly four months of delay, the Centre extended an invitation on September 20 to both the LAB and KDA, which have been leading the agitation for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule in Ladakh. The last round of talks between the delegation and the Centre was held in May 2025.

The September 24 unrest occurred during a shutdown called by LAB to press their demands. Clashes between protesters and security personnel left four people dead, scores injured, and over 70 detained for their alleged involvement in rioting.

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent face of the agitation, was also detained under the National Security Act (NSA), which allows authorities to detain individuals to prevent actions deemed “prejudicial to the defence of India.”

On October 17, the Centre announced a judicial inquiry, headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, into the September 24 clashes, fulfilling a key demand of the agitating groups. (ANI)

Aga Syed Mahmood Confident Aga Ruhullah Mehdi Will Act Right for Party Ahead of Budgam By-Polls

Aga-Ruhullah-Mehdi

As political temperatures rise ahead of the Budgam by-polls, National Conference (NC) candidate Aga Syed Mahmood Al Mosavi has made a pointed yet confident remark about Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, saying the latter “will do what is politically and ethically right for him and the party.”Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Speaking exclusively to Greater Kashmir during the GK Dialogue, Aga Mahmood struck a candid tone, acknowledging the “crisis of trust” in Budgam and admitting that decades of neglect have left the district on the fringes of development.“Budgam has been largely neglected all these years. On the development front, the constituency lacks big time,” he said.

“People here feel politically orphaned, despite the fact that our party has held power. They have expectations, and they are questioning the system.”

The seasoned politician, who has represented Pattan (1987) and Beerwah (1996) constituencies and served as MLC till 2017, said the upcoming by-election poses a “biggest challenge” for the party to reconnect with disenchanted voters.

“It is going to be a tough battle,” he admitted. “We will reach out to people with a strong, development-driven manifesto. Budgam deserves better.”

Calling on influential party figure, Aga Ruhullah, to step forward, Mahmood said:

“Although I haven’t spoken to Ruhullah yet — he’s in Delhi, I will reach out to him. Woh party ka banda hai. He will definitely do whatever is right for us as a party.”

The remarks come amid visible strains within the NC, as Ruhullah has publicly expressed displeasure with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s “passive stand” on critical issues, particularly the reservation policy. Ruhullah recently said he would vote for the NC but not campaign unless the government makes its stance on the reservation report public.

The bypoll, scheduled for November 11, promises a multi-cornered contest with candidates from BJP, PDP, AIP, Apni Party, and several independents in the fray. However, the most closely watched battle is expected between Aga Mahmood (NC) and Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi (PDP) — both from prominent clerical families of Budgam.

Muntazir, an advocate by profession, had lost to Omar Abdullah in the 2024 assembly elections by 18,000 votes. Omar’s subsequent resignation from the Budgam seat paved the way for this bypoll, where 1.26 lakh voters are expected to decide the future of one of Kashmir’s most politically symbolic constituencies.

With family ties, political legacies, and party rifts intertwining, Budgam’s bypoll is shaping up to be more than just an electoral contest — it’s turning into a test of loyalty, leadership, and legacy within Kashmir’s oldest political party.

Aga Syed Mahmood, who was also part of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as it’s senior Vice-president, while commenting on the former Chief Minister and PDP patron, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, recalling him as “a great administrator, an astute politician, and an able governor.”

Reflecting on his time working alongside Mufti Sayeed, Mahmood said, “He knew how to govern. The moment he decided to take any decision, he would stand by it and ensure its execution. I truly enjoyed working with him.”
