NC leader Surinder Choudhary Says Jk Polls was Battle was between Truth, Lie not between BJP and NC

Surinder Choudhary

After the Congress-NC alliance emerged victorious in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, National Conference leader Surinder Choudhary said that the JK polls was between the truth and lie not between BJP and NC.

Surinder Choudhary won JK polls from Nowshera constituency against BJP President Ravinder Raina by a margin of 7819 votes.

The NC leader said, “This battle was not between PM Modi and Farooq Abdullah, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Farooq Abdullah and between BJP and National conference. It was between the truth and the lie. It was between Ravinder Raina and Surinder Choudhary…It seemed like this election was not between me and Ravinder Raina but between me and the whole civil administration here.”

In Jammu and Kashmir National Conference-Congress alliance secured an absolute majority in the Union Territory by winning 49 seats, with the former taking 42 and the latter 6 seats.

Earlier, NC MP Ruhullah Mehdi on Wednesday asserted that the process for forming the government has begun.

Speaking to media persons, JKNC MP Ruhullah Mehdi said, “… Everyone will come to know about the government formation within a day or two… The process for forming the government has begun…”
Meanwhile, JKNC Vice-President Omar Abdullah said that whenever a government is formed in Jammu and Kashmir, it should pass a resolution and begin talks with the union government to restore the region’s statehood.

“Once the government is formed, it should pass a resolution and then engage in talks with the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and other ministers in Delhi,” he stated.

He further emphasized that they would make every effort to work harmoniously with the Lieutenant Governor (LG) for the benefit of the people.

“We do not seek major confrontation between the LG and the government. Instead, we aim for peaceful cooperation and to work for the people until we regain our rightful status as a state. We hope to restore statehood as soon as possible,” he added.

Omar Abdullah further noted that it was too early to determine the government’s priorities, as the party leader and alliance leader were yet to be chosen by the representatives.

Omar Abdullah assured that the future government would work for all citizens, including those who voted for the BJP and those who abstained from voting.

“We are not the type to seek revenge on those who didn’t vote for us. The upcoming government will represent the Congress, the National Conference, the BJP, and even those who abstained from voting. In Srinagar, only 20 per cent voted–should we ignore the remaining 80 per cent? They too deserve the benefits of governance. Similarly, the people of Jammu, who voted for the BJP, also have the right to benefit from the government,” he said. (ANI)

The Return of the National Conference and Sheikh Abdullah’s Leadership

sheikh abdullah

The 1977 state elections in Jammu and Kashmir were a defining moment in the region’s political history. Occurring after the turbulent period of the Emergency (1975-77), these elections signified the restoration of democratic values and fairness in the electoral process. With a renewed emphasis on free and fair elections under Prime Minister Morarji Desai, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a significant political shift, marked by the return of Sheikh Abdullah and the resurgence of the National Conference (NC). This period played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of the state for years to come, reaffirming Abdullah’s leadership and leaving a lasting impact on the region.

1. The 1977 State Elections: A Turning Point for Jammu and Kashmir

The 1977 state elections in Jammu and Kashmir marked a significant shift in the region’s political history. Following the Emergency period (1975-77), these elections were crucial for restoring democracy and fairness in the electoral process. With a voter turnout of 67%, it became clear that the people of Jammu and Kashmir were eager to reclaim their democratic rights. The election allowed the people to voice their opinion, which had been stifled during the Emergency, and set the stage for a new chapter in the state’s political landscape.

2. Sheikh Abdullah’s Return to Power: The Indira-Abdullah Accord of 1975

The Indira-Abdullah Accord of 1975 was a pivotal moment in Jammu and Kashmir’s political history. After years of political tension between the Indian government and Sheikh Abdullah, the accord paved the way for Abdullah’s return to power as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. The National Conference (NC) leader resumed leadership with the support of the Congress party, restoring political stability in the region. His return was hailed as a historic event, marking a renewed commitment to political autonomy for the state under the framework of Indian democracy.

3. Free and Fair Elections Post-Emergency: A Democratic Revival

After the Emergency, restoring faith in India’s democratic processes was paramount. Prime Minister Morarji Desai implemented stringent measures to prevent electoral rigging and ensure a transparent voting process. The 1977 elections in Jammu and Kashmir were a testament to this effort, signalling a revival of democracy in the state. With a focus on free and fair elections, the Desai government succeeded in re-establishing electoral integrity, allowing citizens to choose their leaders without fear or manipulation.

4. Congress Withdrawal and Fresh Polls: The Path to National Conference’s Comeback

In 1977, just two years after Sheikh Abdullah’s return to power, the Congress withdrew its support from the National Conference-led government. This withdrawal triggered fresh elections in the state. With the Congress’s political influence waning due to its mishandling during the Emergency, the stage was set for the National Conference to make a strong comeback. Abdullah, with his immense popularity and legacy, led his party to a resounding victory, solidifying its place as the dominant political force in Jammu and Kashmir.

5. The Role of Morarji Desai in Ensuring Electoral Integrity

Morarji Desai, who became Prime Minister after the Emergency, was determined to restore India’s democratic systems, which had been severely compromised during Indira Gandhi’s rule. His government took concrete steps to guarantee the fairness of the 1977 elections in Jammu and Kashmir. By ensuring that elections were free from rigging, coercion, or malpractice, Desai played a crucial role in restoring the people’s confidence in the democratic process. His actions in safeguarding electoral integrity were instrumental in reviving political accountability in Jammu and Kashmir.

6. National Conference’s Resurgence: A New Political Era

The 1977 elections marked the resurgence of the National Conference (NC) as the dominant political force in Jammu and Kashmir. Under Sheikh Abdullah’s leadership, the NC regained its former glory, representing the aspirations of the Kashmiri people for greater autonomy within the Indian Union. This period signalled the beginning of a new political era, one that balanced local autonomy with national integration. Abdullah’s leadership during this time helped to stabilise the region’s political environment, setting a new course for the future.

7. The Impact of the 1977 Elections on Kashmir’s Political Landscape

The outcome of the 1977 elections had a lasting impact on the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. Sheikh Abdullah’s return to power was not just a personal triumph but a signal of the people’s desire for stability and effective governance. The elections restored political normalcy to a region that had been marked by years of turmoil and uncertainty. The National Conference’s decisive victory laid the groundwork for future political developments, influencing both local and national dynamics in the years to come.

8. Sheikh Abdullah’s Legacy: From 1977 to 1982

Sheikh Abdullah’s second tenure as Chief Minister, from 1977 until his death in 1982, was marked by efforts to further consolidate Jammu and Kashmir’s political identity within the Indian Union while maintaining a degree of local autonomy. Abdullah worked to improve the region’s socio-economic conditions and address the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. His leadership during this period solidified his legacy as a towering figure in the region’s history, and upon his passing, his son Farooq Abdullah succeeded him, ensuring the continuity of the National Conference’s leadership.

9. The Fall of Congress and Rise of the National Conference

The 1977 elections reflected the broader political trend in India, where the Congress party’s influence declined sharply after the Emergency. In Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress was unable to maintain its support base, which provided an opportunity for the National Conference to rise once again. Sheikh Abdullah capitalised on the political vacuum left by the Congress’s retreat, leading his party to a sweeping victory. This period marked the beginning of the National Conference’s dominance in the state’s political landscape.

10. A Historic Electoral Victory: Sheikh Abdullah’s Leadership Reaffirmed

Sheikh Abdullah’s victory in the 1977 elections was not only a personal triumph but a reaffirmation of his leadership and vision for Jammu and Kashmir. The people’s overwhelming support for him and the National Conference demonstrated their trust in his ability to lead the state through a period of political transition. This historic electoral victory cemented Abdullah’s status as one of the most influential political figures in Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring his lasting legacy in the region’s history.

The 1977 elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in the backdrop of the Emergency, a period when civil liberties were severely curtailed. Following the Indira-Abdullah Accord of 1975, Sheikh Abdullah returned to power as Chief Minister, supported by the Congress party. However, after Congress withdrew support in 1977, fresh elections were called. Prime Minister Morarji Desai ensured these elections were free from malpractice, resulting in a 67% voter turnout. The National Conference, led by Abdullah, capitalised on the Congress’s declining influence and won decisively, marking the start of a new political era in the state. Abdullah remained Chief Minister until his death in 1982, with his leadership leaving an enduring legacy.

Sources close to the JKPCC chief clarified that while discussions in New Delhi will focus on election outcome, the meeting with the National Conference was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen opposition unity and allaince in Jammu and Kashmir—(KNO)

Omar Abdullah says that incoming Government will Represent every individual of J-K, regardless of their voting choices

omar abdullah

After Jammu and Kashmir National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah announced that party Vice President Omar Abdullah would be the next Chief Minister, the newly-elected MLA Omar said on Wednesday that the decision ultimately lies with legislators and the alliance.

“I am very grateful for the confidence that he (Farooq Abdullah) has reposed in me. But that decision is of the legislators to make. It is a decision of the alliance to make. I love my father dearly and I am very grateful for the support that he showed me yesterday but finally the say has to be of the legislators and I am always one to do things by the rules and by the book. This is the procedure that has to be followed and that is what will be done,” he said.

The JKNC Vice President outlined two priorities for the incoming government that is legislative and governmental emphasising to pass a resolution asking for statehood to be restored to J-K.

“Whichever CM is sworn-in in the next few days, there will be two sets of priorities – one is legislative, which will be determined by the members of the Assembly when the session is called but the other is government-related. My own suggestion to the incoming government would be that first business of the cabinet should be to pass a resolution asking for statehood to be restored to J&K and the CM should travel to Delhi with that resolution, call on the senior leadership of the country and ask them to fulfill their promise,” he said.

Omar Abdullah further expressed his gratitude and humility towards the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the mandate they’ve given his party.

“I am humbled by the verdict of the people, humbled by the mandate that the people have given. I am also acutely aware of the responsibility that this mandate places upon us. The people of J-K have voted, they made their voices heard, they want to be a part of the process of governance, they want to feel a part of the decision-making process and it is our responsibility to carry them along with us,” he said.

“The people of J-K have gone unheard since 2018. Now the time has come for us to work for the benefit of the people of J-K. I am also acutely aware of the fact that there is a sharp divide between Kashmir and Jammu. Therefore, the incoming government will have a major responsibility of giving a sense of ownership to the people of Jammu,” the NC leader added.

Omar said that incoming government will represent every individual of J-K, regardless of their voting choices.

“The Government that comes in in the next few days will not be that of the NC, of the alliance, of those that voted for us. It will be a government for every individual of J&K regardless of who they voted for or whether they voted at all…Special emphasis will be placed on giving a sense of ownership and a voice within the government to those areas from where MLAs in this coalition will be less in number,” he said.

“First and foremost, wait for the Legislative Party Meeting which will take place tomorrow. Subsequent to the meeting, there will be the alliance meeting, it will determine the leader of the alliance. The leader of alliance will then, I assume, take letters of support, go to Raj Bhavan, stake the claim and request the LG to fix a date for the swearing-in. But I would like that to happen as soon as possible because we have been without an elected government since 2018. Time has come that we get back to work,” Omar added.

The NC leadeR reaffirmed his party’s commitment to restoring statehood to Jamm and Kashmir, emphasizing that their political stance remains unchanged. He acknowledged that regaining Article 370 from those who abolished it would be unrealistic, labeling it as “foolishness” and a deception of the people.

“Our political stand won’t change. We never said that we would be silent on the issue of Article 370 or that it is not an issue for us anymore. But we are not ready to fool people. I have always said that expectations of getting it back from people, who scrapped Article 370, is foolishness. That is like deceiving people. But we would keep this issue alive…We hope that one day the government would change, the Prime Minister would change and there would be a government with whom we would be able to talk on this issue and gain something for J-K,” he said.

JKNC carried the alliance to victory by winning 42 seats in the results declared on Tuesday. Congress could win only six seats. Ninety seats went to the polls in Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls. The BJP also put up a strong performance, winning 29 seats.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP secured three seats, while Sajad Gani Lone’s People’s Conference and Aam Aadmi Party won one seat each. CPI(M) also won one seat. Independents won seven seats. BJP got 25.64 per cent vote share followed by the National Conference with 23.43 per cent and Congress with 11.97 per cent.

This was the first election in Jammu and Kashmir after abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 and its bifurcation into two Union Territories. (ANI)

Kavinder Gupta says party will safeguard regional interests of Jammu and BJP will play role of opposition

After the BJP retained its stronghold Jammu, Kavinder Gupta said, “BJP will play the role of opposition and ensure that the government functions in the right manner. It will be a big challenge for the BJP to protect the interests of Jammu. We will ensure that development takes place in Jammu.”

“The previous governments of Kashmir have always discriminated against Jammu and Ladakh. Since the BJP has formed the government at the centre we have ensured overall development,” he said.

The BJP leader also took a swipe at the Congress and said that the party won only one seat in the Jammu region and lost very badly.

“They have always tried to mislead the public. Congress has always discriminated against the Jammu region and the public has given them a befitting reply. Congress always depends on its allies,” said Gupta.

“Inki jo Mohabbat ki dukan thi, uska shutter band hogya hai,” he added.

The BJP leader also said that statehood will be restored in Jammu and Kashmir at an appropriate time as iterated by Prime Minister Narendra Modia and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Kavinder Gupta further said, “Article 370 has promoted terrorism, corruption, dynasty politics, stone pelting incidents in the state. The government that will be formed in J&K should understand that this kind of situation will never come nor anyone will let it come. The NC Vice President said that the JKNC-Congress alliance secured a majority, with voters displaying maturity and deliberation, particularly in areas where attempts were made to split votes through Independent candidates and smaller parties.

Abdullah acknowledged the voters’ thoughtful participation and said, “Voters voted with due deliberation, especially in the areas where conspiracies were being hatched to divide votes through Independent candidates and small parties. The outer regions of Kashmir and Jammu foiled this conspiracy, but except for 2-3, everyone else had to face defeat. This gives you a sense of understanding of the voters.”

“Our responsibility begins now, voters have done their duty. It is now our duty to work and be worthy of the voters,” the NC leader added.
