Iltija Mufti Criticises Police Over Kathua Killings, Demands Impartial Probe

Iltija Mufti

People’s Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti on Monday criticised the police handling of the recent killing of three civilians in Kathua, including a 14-year-old boy and demanded an impartial probe into the incident.

Mufti expressed concern that the police are not behaving neutrally, citing the fact that BJP leaders were allowed to visit Billawar in the Kathua district of J-K while she and her team were denied permission.

“We wanted to visit Billawar, but the leaders of BJP were allowed to go. We are worried that the police are not behaving in a neutral way. The youngest victim is a 14-year-old. We demand an impartial probe,” said the PDP leader.

Mufti’s comments come after she was denied permission to visit the affected area while BJP leaders were allowed to go.

Despite police claims of normalcy, Mufti pointed out that the incident raises concerns about the police’s ability to perform their duties.

“Police here is stating that everything is normal. If everything is normal here, then how are such big incidents taking place here, ” Mufti told reporters, referring to the killing of three youths.

She also referred to her previous month’s visit to the Billawar, a town in the Kathua district, stating that “people had fear and fear of police more than the militants”. I am not saying that everyone has a bad name among the police…If such incidents are taking place here, it is a border district”.

The PDP leader stressed that police need to be more careful in order to prevent such incidents

“Police should be more careful. They have to be vigilant. Somewhere, the responsibility comes to the police. And unfortunately, it seems police are not able to discharge their duty properly,” the PDP leader said.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary condemned the killings.

Three people who went missing in the Kathua district were found dead by security forces in a river on Saturday, triggering protests in the area.

The leader of Opposition (LoP) of the JK Assembly, Sunil Sharma, expressed his concern, saying the central government is very worried about the situation and that whoever is behind the incident will not be spared.

“All the MLAs went to Kathua and met the families of the deceased. We discussed on the events leading to their deaths and informed the Union Home Minister, who ensured that action will be taken according to the outcome of the investigation… Central government is very worried about the situation and whoever is behind the incident will not be spared at all,” Sharma told ANI.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has also ordered an investigation into the incident. (ANI)

PDP Leader Waheed Parra Slams J&K Budget as ‘Repackaged Schemes,’ Calls It a Betrayal of Youth

Waheed Parra PDP

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislative leader and MLA from Pulwama, Waheed Ur Rehman Parra, has expressed deep disappointment over the Union Territory budget presented today, calling it a mere compilation of centrally sponsored schemes rather than a people-centric financial roadmap.

Parra criticized the budget for failing to address critical issues like poverty alleviation, unemployment, and economic revival. “This budget is nothing but a U-turn from the commitments made in the election manifesto. Instead of prioritizing grassroots development, it merely repackages old schemes without any substantial allocations or vision for the future,” he remarked.

He pointed out that despite tall promises of a transformative economic strategy, the budget falls short on key sectors such as agriculture, youth employment, and social welfare, raising serious concerns about the government’s intent in fulfilling its electoral pledges.

Parra further slammed the government for sidelining the aspirations of the youth, calling the budget a complete letdown. “With an allocation of ?1.12 lakh crore, one would expect a clear roadmap for tackling unemployment, economic recovery, and public welfare. Shockingly, the budget does not even mention crucial terms like ‘youth’ or ‘unemployment’ at a time when J&K’s jobless rate stands at a staggering 32%,” he stated.

He accused the government of betraying the region’s youth, who had been waiting for decisive action.

“Instead of being a step towards empowerment and development, this budget is merely an exercise in numbers, offering no real relief to the common citizen.”

Parra also highlighted the plight of vulnerable sections of society, including casual laborers, daily wagers, contractual workers, vocational trainers, SPOs, and BPL families, who he said had been completely ignored. “There is no provision for regularizing workers, no wage revisions, and no financial security for those who form the backbone of J&K’s economy,” he added.

Commenting on the government’s announcement that Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families would receive 200 units of free electricity, Parra called it a deceptive relief measure. He pointed out that under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, families must install rooftop solar panels—costing at least ?80,000—to qualify for the benefit.

“In Kashmir’s harsh winters, even a poor household with basic appliances like a heater, four bulbs, and a water boiler consumes between 800 to 1,500 units per month. If only 200 units are subsidized, families will still be left with massive electricity bills running into thousands of rupees. The requirement of purchasing a solar panel system further burdens low-income families already struggling to meet daily expenses,” he explained.(KNS)

JKPC Chief Sajad Lone Criticizes NC Leader Shamima Firdaus Over Selective Outrage on Killings

Sajad Lone

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC) President Sajad Lone on Tuesday strongly criticized National Conference (NC) leader Shamima Firdaus over her remarks on killings and arrests in the region, questioning the selective outrage over the past three decades.

Speaking during a discussion, Lone pointed out that numerous people have been killed over the last 30 years, and the real question should be who was responsible for their deaths. He questioned why certain periods of violence were highlighted while others were ignored.

“The point of order is that in the last 30 years, many people have been buried in graves.
Who should be asked who killed them? Shamima Firdaus spoke about killings and arrests, but did no one die between 1996 and 2002, or from 2008 to 2014?” Lone asked.

He also raised concerns over prolonged detentions, citing the case of senior separatist leader Shabbir Shah, who, according to Lone, has been imprisoned for 45 years.

As Firdaus continued her remarks, a disruption followed, with Lone asserting that the discussion was not a scripted event. “This is not a movie!” he remarked, further intensifying the heated exchange. (KNS)

PDF Chief Hakeem Yaseen Rejects Further Talks on J&K Statehood, Urges Immediate Restoration

Hakeem Yaseen

People’s Democratic Front (PDF) chairman and former minister, Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen on Tuesday asserted that further engagement with stakeholders for the restoration of J&K’s statehood is unnecessary.

In a statement issued to media he said that the decisive mandate given in the 2024 Assembly elections to a particular political party was explicitly for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional guarantees, particularly the return of its statehood.

Senior PDF leader Hakeem Yaseen urged the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha , Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah to set a clear timeframe for restoring statehood to J&K, stressing that any delay would be seen as a deliberate attempt to prolong the current proxy administration.

He emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir was a thriving state until 2019 but was unjustly downgraded and divided against the will of its people.

Hakeem asserted that the people’s desire for statehood was clearly reflected in the assembly elections, where a particular party received a decisive mandate based on its commitment to restoring J&K’s constitutional position.

He appealed to the central leadership to respect the 2024 mandate and take immediate steps to reinstate statehood, rather than engaging in prolonged discussions with so-called stakeholders to delay the process.

PDF President Hakeem Yaseen further stated that since the Supreme Court, while directing the Centre to conduct assembly elections in J&K, had categorically supported the restoration of statehood, there is no justification for further delays.

He reminded the Centre of its repeated commitments, made by both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, regarding the return of statehood.

Hakeem also warned that any unnecessary delay in the process would be perceived as a calculated move to continue the Centre’s direct rule in Jammu and Kashmir for political considerations.

Sajad Lone Walks Out of Assembly Over Disallowance of Issues Like Article 370, Police Verification, and 1987 Rigging

Sajad Lone Walks Out

Peoples Conference president and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone, on Tuesday staged a walkout from the Legislative Assembly over the disallowing of his amendments regarding Article 370, police verification, and the shifting back of detainees lodged in jails outside J&K.

Peoples Conference president and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone, on Tuesday staged a walkout from the Legislative Assembly over the disallowing of his amendments regarding Article 370, police verification, and the shifting back of detainees lodged in jails outside J&K.

After the question hour ended, Lone stood up and questioned Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather over the disallowing of his amendments regarding Article 370, a probe into the rigging of the 1987 election, and PSA detentions.

The Speaker said that they had been disallowed under the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House.

Lone had submitted seven amendments to the LG’s address; however, only two were allowed. In his amendments, Lone had submitted that there was no mention of Article 370, doing away with the existing police verification system, and a probe into the rigging of the 1987 polls in the LG’s address. Lone said that there was no mention of Article 370 in the resolution passed in the J&K Assembly in the last session.

“We are victims of police verification, and the rules are very stringent. I am myself a victim. Nobody should be punished for what their kins have done. We cannot keep quiet on these issues,” he said.

Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat supported Lone’s argument that police verification should be discussed and debated in the House. “You should have kept the repeal of PSA in the LG’s address if you had an intention,” Lone said. To this, the Speaker said that these matters pertain to the Ministry of Home Affairs. “It cannot be done unless the state is restored,” he said.

Angered by the Speaker’s refusal to allow the amendments to the LG’s address, Lone staged a walkout from the House—(KNO)

Sajad Lone Slams NC Over LG’s Address, Calls It Ideologically Aligned with BJP

Sajad Lone

Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference President Sajad lone on Monday Criticised National Conference over lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s Address to J&K Assembly.

In a post on X, Sajad lone wrote, “The governor’s address is indistinguishable from a possible BJP speech, had they been in power. There seems to be total ideological overlap.”

“No mention not even remotely of Article 370, Article 35 A. No mention of 5 August 2019. No mention of reorganisation Act.” He added.

“Seems the NC government has finally done away even with ornamentalism. They don’t even want to pretend that have anything to do with Article 370.” Sajad lone said

“I remember how during election campaign it was all about Article 370, and how all others are BJP. And now the ideological overlap.”he added.

“What a comedown. And if this address was a vision statement of the government, it is as visionless as it can get. It is a generalised departmental statement without any new political, social or economic intiative.” Sajad lone added.

“So, be prepared for an aimless, visionless spell of governance, bereft of any newness in approach or any creativity.” he added.

“Same beaten track. The bureaucrats ran the last administration. The bureaucrats will run this administration. The political contribution to governance is all set to be non existent.” Sajjad lone wrote.

DPAP Leader Peer Bilal Urges Regularization of Daily Wagers in J&K

DPAP Leader Peer Bilal

DPAP Senior Leader Peer Bilal on Wednesday advocated for the regularization of daily wagers in Jammu and Kashmir, citing the recent order by the Ladakh administration to enhance their wages.

Bilal argued that daily wagers in J&K are facing immense hardships, with their families struggling to make ends meet due to starvation.

“These daily wagers play a crucial role in providing essential services in various departments, including Jal Shakti, RDD*, Health, PWD, PDD, and Agriculture. Given Ladakh’s decision to enhance wages, Peer Bilal questions why J&K, a Union Territory, cannot follow suit”he said.

Adding to it he said that in fact, daily rated workers in Kashmir Valley have been demanding regularization and minimum wages for years, with many employed in government departments, agriculture, tourism, and other sectors. They face low pay, job insecurity, and lack of social security benefits, despite their essential contributions.

Peer Bilal has urged the His Excellency LG to intervene in the matter on a top priority basis, seeking a solution to the long-standing issues faced by daily wagers in J&K.
