Residents Demand Upgrade of Sallar PHC to Sub-District Hospital, Cite Years of Delays and Health Risks

sallar PHC

In the calm yet challenging landscape of South Kashmir, the village of Sallar has long depended on its Primary Health Centre (PHC) as the first point of medical care. Situated on an important route leading to Pahalgam and the Amarnath Yatra, the area serves not just locals but also tourists and pilgrims. Today, residents say the time has come for the government to fulfil its long-standing promise and upgrade the Sallar PHC into a full-fledged Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Locals say the demand is not political, but born out of daily hardship. In nearly a 40-kilometre stretch from Pahalgam to Bijbehara, there is no properly equipped hospital to handle emergencies, surgeries, or specialised treatment. The existing PHCs, including Sallar, work with limited staff, basic facilities, and inadequate diagnostic tools. Anything beyond minor treatment forces patients to travel over 30 kilometres to Anantnag District Hospital.

For residents, this gap often turns critical situations into life-threatening ones. Pregnant women facing complications, farmers injured during work, or elderly patients needing urgent care must travel long distances on narrow and difficult roads. During winter, when snow blocks routes and visibility drops, delays become even more dangerous. Many families recall painful incidents where patients reached the district hospital too late.

The Sallar PHC is among the oldest health centres in Anantnag district. Despite limited resources, it has continued to serve people during conflicts, natural disasters, and routine emergencies. In 2023, it even ranked second among PHCs in Jammu and Kashmir under the National Health Mission, highlighting its performance and potential. Yet, residents say, it remains stuck at the primary level with outdated infrastructure.

Over the years, several inspections, public meetings, and official visits have raised hopes. In December 2025, reports suggested that a committee under Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) had proposed upgrading seven PHCs to SDH level, with Sallar placed high on the list. Assurances were also given about new IPD and OPD blocks. However, as 2026 begins, locals say nothing has moved on the ground.

The recent exclusion of Sallar PHC from the Tele Medicine Scheme has added to the frustration. Residents believe this decision has denied them even temporary access to specialist consultations, further widening the healthcare gap. “We keep hearing about budgets, procedures, and priorities, but for us these delays mean real suffering,” locals said.

While residents acknowledge improvements in healthcare across Jammu and Kashmir—such as new medical colleges, critical care blocks, and expanded health schemes—they say rural areas like Sallar continue to be overlooked. With existing SDHs in Bijbehara and Shangus, people question why this crucial belt, which sees heavy tourist and pilgrimage movement, remains underserved.

Upgrading Sallar PHC to an SDH would mean inpatient facilities, emergency care, specialist doctors, diagnostic labs, and ambulance services. Locals say this would reduce pressure on Anantnag District Hospital, save lives, and strengthen healthcare support for both residents and visitors.

The community, including farmers, shopkeepers, students, and elders, has united behind the demand. Local advocates have raised the issue repeatedly, and residents say they are prepared to submit formal representations through health authorities and official grievance portals if needed.

For the people of Sallar, healthcare is not a privilege but a basic right. They say upgrading the PHC is not just about buildings or beds—it is about dignity, safety, and trust in governance. After years of waiting, residents say the message is clear: the time for promises is over, and the time for action has arrived.

Srinagar Doctor Dr. Rouf Jeelani Seeks Government Help to Airlift Critically Ill Wife from Mecca

Dr. Rouf Jeelani

A Srinagar-based dental doctor, Dr. Rouf Jeelani, has made an emotional appeal to the government, seeking urgent help to airlift his critically ill wife from Mecca in Saudi Arabia to Srinagar for specialised medical treatment.

Dr. Jeelani had travelled to Saudi Arabia with his wife to perform Umrah when she suddenly suffered a stroke during their stay in Mecca. She was immediately taken to a local hospital, where she remains admitted in critical condition. Doctors have reportedly informed the family that her recovery could take several months, or even up to a year.

Facing a painful situation far away from home, Dr. Jeelani has sought the intervention of Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He has urged them to take up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs to arrange her urgent medical evacuation to Srinagar.

In his appeal, Dr. Jeelani said he is going through the most difficult phase of his life and feels helpless under the circumstances. He said being in a foreign country, combined with his wife’s critical condition, has placed immense emotional strain on the family.

“I request the authorities and kind-hearted people to help me bring my wife back to Srinagar for proper medical care. I am facing the worst situation of my life,” he said.

Family members, relatives, friends, and well-wishers have also appealed to the authorities to take swift and compassionate action. They stressed that time is crucial and that immediate intervention could be vital for the patient’s safe transfer and recovery.

The family has expressed hope that the concerned authorities will respond quickly to this humanitarian appeal, considering the seriousness and urgency of the situation.

Returned Students Say Situation in Iran Was Normal, Social Media Reports Exaggerated

Returned Students

Dozens of Indian students who recently returned home from Iran have said that the ground situation in the country was normal and far less serious than what was shown on social media.

The students, most of whom were studying medical and other professional courses, said they neither witnessed unrest nor faced any threat during their stay in Iran. They explained that while they heard about protests through news reports and online sources, daily life in the cities where they lived continued without disruption.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

According to the students, the main difficulty they faced was the lack of internet services. “Internet was not working properly, which made it hard to contact our families, but there was no fear or panic around us,” several students said. They added that campuses and nearby areas remained calm.

Many students also said that a large number of their classmates and fellow Indian students chose to stay back in Iran, as academic activities were continuing as usual. “We only heard about protests, but we never saw anything with our own eyes,” some of the students said, calling social media narratives exaggerated and misleading.

Parents of the returning students expressed relief over the safe return of their children. They thanked the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) for its coordination and support during the process.

The parents especially praised Dr Mohammad Moomin Khan, Vice President of AIMSA, for his efforts. “We are truly thankful to AIMSA, especially Dr Mohammad Moomin Khan, who made every possible effort to ensure our children returned home safely,” they said.

The students urged people to rely on verified information rather than unconfirmed social media content, warning that such reports often create unnecessary fear and do not reflect the actual situation on the ground.

PDP Leader Naeem Akhter Calls Mosque-Related Actions an Attack on Religious Freedom

Naeem

Former minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Naeem Akhter on Friday said recent steps involving mosques and religious institutions amount to an attack on religious freedom and should be reconsidered by the government.

Responding to questions about alleged pressure on imams and mosque managements, Akhter said his party’s stand had already been clearly stated by PDP president Mehbooba Mufti a day earlier.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

He said the move raises serious concerns about the right of Muslims to practise their religion freely. “This is an attack on our religion, our religious freedom, and our legal rights,” Akhter said, questioning whether Muslims are being allowed to follow their faith without interference.

Akhter said mosques are not only places of worship but also important social spaces where people meet, discuss issues, and try to find solutions to problems affecting society. “These are sacred spaces where people come together and engage with community concerns,” he added.

He questioned the need for what he described as unnecessary measures involving mosques and said there was no justification for such actions in the present situation. He appealed to the government to review and rethink its approach.

Referring to donations collected in mosques, Akhter said these contributions are made voluntarily, especially on Fridays. “Someone gives five rupees, someone ten, fifty or five hundred. Everyone knows where the money comes from,” he said, adding that such matters should not be used to create fear or pressure.

He warned that continued interference could discourage people from managing mosques. “If this continues, mosques may be left without caretakers, as administrators will step away,” he cautioned.

Akhter also raised concerns about administrative issues in Bandipora district. He said nearly half of the officers in the district collectorate were holding additional charges, while several key posts remained vacant. He pointed out that the Additional Deputy Commissioner’s post has been vacant for about a year and that even the medical superintendent is holding additional responsibility.

“This is disturbing. When posts remain vacant, people suffer,” he said, adding that delays are affecting development work and essential services, including healthcare and education.

The PDP leader urged the Chief Minister to take immediate steps to fill vacant posts to ensure smooth functioning of public services.

Notably, senior PDP leaders attended a party workers’ meeting in Kehnoosa, Bandipora. The meeting was attended by Zonal President Bandipora Er. Mir Naseer Ahmad, Mohammad Abdullah Wani, Abdul Majeed Rahi, Mudassir Hussain, Abdul Hameed Dar, Abdul Rasheed, and others, according to KNS.

J&K Prepared to Face Cross-Border Threats, Security Situation Largely Under Control: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo

Atal Dulloo

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Friday said that adversarial elements, including hostile forces from across the border, will continue attempts to create trouble, but security preparedness on the ground remains strong. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

He said the region faces multiple challenges such as infiltration attempts, harsh weather, and difficult terrain, which are often exploited by hostile elements. Dulloo added that Pakistan and its terror networks keep trying to take advantage of surprise to disturb peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

Expressing confidence in the security system, he said all agencies are on high alert. The Indian Army, paramilitary forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and intelligence agencies are fully prepared to respond strongly to any conspiracy.

Dulloo described the overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2025 as largely under control, apart from one major incident — the Pahalgam attack. He said the year reflected strong operational effectiveness and several successes by security forces.

At least 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 last year, with more than a dozen injured.

He said there was visible dominance of security forces across the region and highlighted successful operations, including Operation Mahadev, and the busting of terror modules involved in attacks outside the region.

Referring to recent high-level security review meetings chaired by the Union Home Minister, Dulloo said such reviews are routine. He added that security strategies are continuously reviewed and updated to meet future challenges.

On threats in 2026, the Chief Secretary said hostile elements would keep trying to create unrest, but security forces are ensuring effective control so that terrorists do not succeed.

He also spoke about Pakistan-sponsored drone activities along the border, saying attempts to smuggle weapons and narcotics are a serious threat but are being effectively countered by the Army, Border Security Force, police, and other agencies.

Dulloo said the terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir has weakened significantly. Recruitment into terrorist groups is now almost negligible, while incidents like stone-pelting and shutdowns have largely disappeared.

He added that people are moving away from violence, and any effort to revive terrorism will be dealt with firmly to ensure peace and normal life continue in the region. (Media Agencies)

Crime Branch Kashmir Files Charge Sheet in ₹13 Lakh Fake MBBS Admission Scam

Crime Branch Kashmir

The Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch Kashmir has filed a charge sheet in FIR No. 10/2024 under Sections 420 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code before the Sub-Judge Court Baramulla.

The charge sheet has been filed against Aquib Javeed, son of Mohammad Ayoub, and his brother Mohd Ahtesham Ahmad, also son of Mohammad Ayoub. Both accused are residents of Ring Road, Adarsh Nagar, Gulbarga, in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

According to officials, the case began after a written complaint in which the complainant alleged that he was approached by Dr. Shamsu-Din, who was working at Al-Amin Medical College. He allegedly promised to arrange an MBBS admission for the complainant’s son through Aquib Javeed.

Based on this assurance, the complainant paid ₹13 lakh. However, neither was the admission arranged nor was the money returned.

Following the complaint, a detailed investigation was carried out by the Economic Offences Wing. During the probe, it was found that Aquib Javeed, in criminal conspiracy with his brother, cheated the complainant by falsely promising admission in KBN Medical College.

The investigation confirmed offences under Sections 420 and 120-B IPC. As the accused are currently absconding, the charge sheet has been filed in absentia by initiating proceedings under Section 512 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Officials said the action reflects the Crime Branch’s commitment to tackling financial frauds and protecting the public from such scams.

Kishtwar Administration Takes Action Against Revenue Officials Over Jamabandi Digitisation Lapses

Assistant Executive Engineer suspended

The district administration in Kishtwar has taken strict action against three revenue officials for alleged negligence and poor performance in the digitisation of Jamabandies, a key initiative of the Revenue Department.

As per official orders issued by the Deputy Commissioner, OP Naibat Sohal, Vijay Kumar, who was also holding additional charge of PH Sohal, has been placed under suspension with immediate effect.

The action followed repeated complaints from the Tehsildar Atholi Paddar regarding Vijay Kumar’s failure to carry out assigned duties properly. The issue was raised several times, including during review meetings held on January 11 and 12 with tehsildars of the district.

According to the order, the official allegedly ignored instructions, failed to complete assigned tasks, and slowed down the progress of Jamabandi digitisation. Despite clear directions from the Secretary to Government, Revenue Department, to speed up the process, no satisfactory progress was reported.

During the suspension period, Vijay Kumar will remain attached with the Marwah Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office and will receive subsistence allowance as per rules, subject to regular attendance. The SDM Marwah has been appointed as the Inquiry Officer and has been asked to submit a detailed report within 30 days.

Meanwhile, the charge of PH Sohal has been handed over to Vijay Kumar Sharma from the SDM Office Paddar, in addition to his existing duties.

In a separate order, the Deputy Commissioner has also directed the withholding of salaries of two Patwaris — Nisar Ahmad Beigh (Patwari Halqa Chenger) and Javeed Iqbal (Patwari Halqa Dehrana) — due to their poor performance in Jamabandi digitisation. Their salaries will remain withheld until further orders.

The district administration said these actions have been taken in public interest to ensure accountability, discipline, and timely implementation of important government initiatives.
