Shashi Tharoor Urges 50% Tariff on US Goods in Retaliation to Trump’s New Trade Penalty on India

Shashi Tharoor

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said that India should also raise tariffs on American goods to 50 per cent in response to the US imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports.

Tharoor questioned why India should stop at the current 17 per cent tariff and emphasised that the country should not be intimidated by such actions. He also said that no country should be allowed to threaten India in this manner.

Speaking to the reporters, Shashi Tharoor said, “It will definitely have an impact because we have a trade of $90 billion with them, and if everything becomes 50% more expensive, buyers will also think why should they buy Indian things?… If they do this, we should also impose a 50% tariff on American exports… It is not that any country can threaten us like this…”

“Our average tariffs on American goods are 17%. Why should we stop at 17%? We should also raise it to 50%… We need to ask them, do they not value our relationship? If India doesn’t matter to them, they should also not matter to us,” he added.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order on August 6 imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws, for the increase, claiming that India’s imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States.

Terming the United States’ move to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil imports from Russia as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) declared that New Delhi will take “all actions necessary to protect its national interests.

In further development, a senior United States Administration Official told ANI that there is simply “no comparison” between the hundreds of billions of dollars of growing Indian imports of Russian oil and the modest US imports of Russian goods.

In response to a question, the US official told ANI, “There is simply no comparison between the hundreds of billions of dollars of growing Indian imports of Russian oil, and the modest U.S. imports of Russian goods, which amount to less than 1% of the value of Indian imports”. (ANI)

Kashmir Crime Branch Secures Convictions in Major Fraud, Forgery Cases After Lengthy Trials

Fraud Job

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir has secured convictions in two separate criminal cases related to fraud and forgery, marking a significant step in the agency’s ongoing efforts to tackle economic crimes in the region.

In the first case, the Court of City Judge Srinagar convicted two individuals — Mukhtar Ahmad Guroo and Nazir Ahmad Guroo, sons of Gulla Mohammad Guroo, residents of Abi-Karpora, Nehru Park Dalgate Srinagar — in connection with FIR No. 24/2008 registered under Sections 420 and 109-B of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).

According to officials, the case pertained to the fraudulent collection of Rs 34 lakh from a complainant, a foreign national, under the false promise of facilitating the purchase of residential immovable property.

The accused allegedly concealed the fact that the complainant, being a foreigner, was not legally permitted to buy property in Kashmir. This deception resulted in significant financial loss to the complainant.

Following a prolonged trial lasting 12 years, the court found both accused guilty and sentenced them to simple imprisonment for a period of two years.A fine of Rs 5,000 per offence was also imposed on each individual.

In the second case, related to FIR No. 54/2002, the same court convicted seven individuals accused of forging and submitting a fake 10th class marks card to secure admission into a Higher Secondary School. The accused were booked under Sections 420, 468, 471, and 120-B RPC.

Investigators said the accused acted in connivance to prepare and use fake academic credentials. The Crime Branch conducted a detailed investigation and produced strong documentary and oral evidence in court, which eventually led to their conviction.

The court sentenced all seven individuals to simple imprisonment for a period of two years and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 per offence.

The Economic Offences Wing, formerly the Crime Branch Kashmir, stated that these convictions demonstrate its commitment to pursuing white-collar crimes and bringing offenders to justice.

Officials said the agency would continue to handle such matters with legal precision and a high standard of investigation and prosecution.(KNS).
