SFC Revises Tendering Limits for Contractors, Reduces Cap for Small Contractors: Sajad Gani Lone

Sajad Lone

Handwara lawmaker and Peoples Conference President Sajad Gani Lone has raised concerns over the recent decision by the State Forest Corporation (SFC) to revise tendering limits for contractors.

In a meeting held on December 3, the SFC reduced the permissible limit for small contractors in the tendering process from 30,000 cubic feet to 10,000 cubic feet.

Lone stated that this decision unfairly targets small contractors, the poorest among the contractor categories, and will reduce their share in timber extraction contracts.”Timber extraction is largely labour-intensive, and the extraction capabilities do not drastically change between the categories of contractors,” Lone remarked.

He emphasized that the move lacks plausible justification and called for a re-evaluation of the decision.(KNS).

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Condemns House Arrest, Voices Concern Over Kashmiri Prisoners

Mirwaiz-Umar-Farooq

For the second consecutive week, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was disallowed from delivering the Friday sermon at Jama Masjid in Srinagar.

Expressing his dismay, Mirwaiz posted a strongly worded statement on X (formerly Twitter), condemning his house arrest and the continued imprisonment of thousands of Kashmiri prisoners.

In his post, Mirwaiz said: “Again disallowed from going to Jama Masjid on a Friday for the second consecutive week.As I raise people’s issues and concerns from the pulpit as is my duty, it seems to make the authorities jittery and uncomfortable, so lock him up! As if by locking me up issues will disappear and reality altered. But an authoritarian mindset can’t think beyond… strongly condemn my house arrest and the imprisonment of thousands of Kashmiri prisoners who are victims of this mindset.” (KNS)

In A Decade 9070 Lives Lost in Road Accidents in J&K ,18-46 Age Group Most Affected,9% Deaths Involve Teens: GoI

accident

Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed 9,070 fatalities in road accidents in a decade with the people aged between 18-45 years most affected.

This data was revealed by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Jairam Gadkari in Parliament as part of a nationwide review of road safety in response to a query.

He said that the fatalities were most prominent in the age group of 18-45 years, which accounted for nearly 60% of the deaths during the period.

He said that in the age group of 14-17 years, around 7% of fatalities were recorded which depicts involvement of underage and inexperienced drivers. For persons aged above 45, approximately 25% of the deaths occurred which shows the need for heightened safety awareness across all age brackets.

The Minister said that two-wheelers accounted for the highest number of fatalities in J&K, followed by light motor vehicles such as cars and SUVs with heavy vehicles like trucks and buses also contributed significantly. Pedestrians and cyclists were not spared, with many losing their lives due to inadequate infrastructure and driver negligence.

He also said that the majority of accidents occurred during daylight hours, contrary to the assumption that night driving is more dangerous which indicates the need for constant vigilance and safer driving practices throughout the day.

The Minister said that the government is committed to reduce road accident fatalities by 50% by 2030, aligning with global commitments under the Stockholm Declaration on Road Safety.

He said that the “4 Es” strategy—Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency care is the framework for addressing these challenges in J&K.

He further said that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has initiated accident-prone area audits, installation of safety signages, and awareness campaigns targeting high-risk groups. Stricter enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, is also being implemented to ensure better compliance with road safety regulations.

The Minister said that J&K’s difficult terrains and rapidly increasing vehicle numbers exacerbate road safety risks. Collaboration with local authorities, enhanced infrastructure, and public participation are important to address these issues, he said.

Dr Karan Singh Congratulates CM Omar Abdullah for Deciding to Reintroduce ‘Darbar Move’

Karan Singh

Veteran Congress leader Karan Singh on Thursday congratulated chief minister Omar Abdullah for deciding to reintroduce the centuries old tradition of ‘darbar move’, saying it would be helpful to overcome cultural and linguistic differences between the two regions.

Darbar move, under which the civil secretariat and other government offices used to function six months each in Srinagar and Jammu during summer and winter, respectively, was stopped by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha in June 2021, citing administration’s complete transition to e-office which could help save Rs 200 crore per year.

Abdullah on Wednesday met the representatives of civil society here and announced that his government will restore the Darbar move.

“We assure you that the Darbar move will be restored. Jammu has its own importance and we will not allow its uniqueness to diminish,” he had said after chairing over a three-hour long meeting at his official residence here.

“I congratulate the new chief minister for deciding to reintroduce the centuries old tradition of the Darbar move, started decades ago by my great ancestor Maharaja Ranbir Singh,” Karan Singh, the son of last Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh, said in a statement.

“He realised that the differences linguistic, cultural and geographical between Jammu and Kashmir were so great that unless they were bridged, it would be difficult for them to stay together peacefully,” he said.

Singh said the Darbar move was a brilliant project which enabled a large number of employees, including senior officers, to move every year from one capital to the other.

“This was particularly useful for Jammu because its economy depended to a large extent on the influx from Kashmir every winter. Now that only the two units remain from the original State of Jammu and Kashmir, it is all the more necessary that the cultural and linguistic differences between Srinagar and Jammu should be bridged as far as possible, for which the Darbar Move will be very helpful,” he said.

The chief minister said some things cannot be weighed merely in financial terms.

“The Darbar move symbolises the unity and inclusivity of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a tradition that ensures governance remains accessible to both regions,” he said.

He dismissed financial arguments against this 150 year old practice which has now been stopped, stating, the role of the government is not to focus solely on profit.

“Our responsibility is to serve and ensure balanced development across regions. Ending the Darbar Move would only alienate the people of the two regions from one another and harm the collective unity we strive to preserve,” he said.
