Sonzal Welfare Trust hosted a landmark event in Srinagar on Sunday to launch the highly anticipated book, “Unlocking Closet: Lived Experiences of LGB Kashmiri Muslims,” authored by Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Bund.

The book offers a profound exploration of the lives, struggles, and resilience of LGBTQ+ individuals within the Muslim community in Kashmir, shedding light on a subject that has long been underrepresented in both academic and social discourse.

The event was attended by a diverse group of academics, activists, students, and members of the LGBTQ+ community, marking a significant step forward in the conversation about gender and sexual diversity in the region.

The ceremony began with a recitation from the Quran, followed by a welcome address by the Chairperson of Sonzal Welfare Trust, who underscored the organization’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and amplifying marginalized voices.

The book was officially released by a distinguished panel of dignitaries, including Dr. Monisa Qadri, Senior Assistant Professor and HOD of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Dr. Mudasir, Clinical Psychologist at the Drug De-addiction Centre in Anantnag, Anam, Doctoral Scholar at the Department of Law, Central University of Kashmir, Feroz, Developmental Practitioner in the field of Gender, and Bablu ji, a prominent transgender leader. Poets and fiction writers from the Fiction Writers Guild, including Manzoor Ah. Kant Sahab, also contributed by presenting poems on gender and sexual minorities. Students and scholars from the University of Kashmir, Central University, and IUST also attended the event.

The book review was presented by renowned literary critic and development practitioner, Manzoor Ahmad Yatoo, who commended the book for its insightful and comprehensive approach to an often ignored subject.

Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Bund, a well-known social worker and researcher, shared his personal journey of writing the book. He stressed the importance of providing a safe space for Kashmiri LGBTQ+ individuals to share their experiences, thus giving voice to the societal pressures, discrimination, and resilience they face. “This book is not just about struggles; it is a testament to courage and the human spirit’s ability to thrive against odds,” Dr. Bund said, highlighting the book’s central message of resilience.

Excerpts from the book were read aloud during the event, moving the audience deeply. The narratives presented an intricate intersection of faith, culture, and identity, offering a rare and nuanced perspective on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ Muslims in a conservative society.

Following the book launch, a panel discussion was held, featuring experts who discussed the necessity of dialogue, policy reforms, and greater societal acceptance to ensure the dignity and rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Kashmir. The panelists underscored the importance of creating an inclusive environment where people of all identities could live freely and authentically.

Death Toll from Mystery Illness in Rajouri District Rises to Nine, Probe Ordered

The number of deaths from an Mystery illness in Rajouri district has risen to nine, with a woman breathing her last today due to the mysterious disease, prompting authorities to order a probe to ascertain the cause of her death.

Reports said the woman, a resident of Badhaal village, died after sudden medical complications with initial symptoms not resembling with earlier deaths.They said the district administration has ordered an immediate probe to ascertain the cause of her death.

The woman had earlier lost her two sons and a daughter to the ‘mystery’ illness.A Biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) mobile laboratory has been dispatched to Rajouri to expedite testing and identify the illness, officials said.

SIA Files Chargesheet Against Key Operatives of “Kashmir Fight” for Threatening Migrant Employees

In a significant stride in the fight against cyber-terrorism, the State Investigation Agency (SIA), Jammu, has filed a chargesheet against key operatives behind the notorious “Kashmir Fight” a social media handle.

As per the statement issued here, Police said, The platform, operated by The Resistance Front (TRF)-a proscribed terrorist organization-was used to issue chilling online threats to migrant Kashmiri Pandit employees, aiming to spread fear and unrest.

In February 2024, a series of threatening posts were published on social media by the terror outfits’s social media handle, following which an investigation was initiated by SIA Jammu. During the investigation, SIA apprehended Farhaan Muzaffar Mattoo, a resident of Srinagar, for his alleged role in gathering and sharing sensitive information about targeted employees. The probe revealed that Mattoo acted as a conduit, using encrypted communication platforms to pass critical data about migrant employees to handlers based in Pakistan, who then issued threats through the “Kashmir Fight” platform.

The chargesheet also names Sheikh Sajjad Ahmad, alias Sajjad Gul, a Srinagar resident now operating from Pakistan, as the mastermind of this plot. Sajad is accused of coordinating the campaign to intimidate migrant employees and disrupt communal harmony in the UT. The exposing of terror plans to disrupt peace underscores the determination of Jammu and Kashmir Police to protect its citizenry and provide a peaceful environment to them.

The chargesheet was filed before the Hon’ble 3rd Additional Sessions Judge, Jammu, today.

Birdi-IPS chaired a review meeting at PCR Kashmir which was attended by IG CRPF (SOS), JD IB Srinagar, DIGs of Kashmir Zone Police, DIG Armed Kashmir, DIG CRPF South Srinagar, DIG BSF Srinagar, DIG ITB J&K, SSP PCR Kashmir, all district SSPs, DC SB Srinagar, SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir, SSP CID CIK, SSP Traffic City Srinagar, SSP APCR, SSP Railways, SSP Security, SP PC Srinagar and other senior officers.

The aim of the meeting was to review the preparedness and arrangements put in place in view of the winter season and the upcoming events. IGP Kashmir emphasized the need for proactive security measures for strengthening the security grid in order to ensure hassle-free events. He directed the district SSsP to ensure smooth traffic movement especially during the festival days.

IGP Kashmir also reviewed the security measures put in place for the security of vital installations and domination of highways. He stressed upon the officers to ensure the surveillance upon anti-national elements and to increase area domination in their respective areas.

IGP Kashmir urged the officers to remain vigilant and maintain robust coordination among various sister agencies & to chalk out strategies to overcome security challenges.

The meeting concluded with the resolve to ensure safe and peaceful conduct of all the forthcoming events in the valley.

Javid Ahmad Mir and Shamim Ahmad Mir Arrested for Assaulting Govt Official in Pulwama: Police

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday said that two persons were arrested for assaulting government employee in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

A Spokesperson said that Police it acted swiftly following a complaint from the District Mineral Officer’s office regarding the assault of a mining department employee, Mohammad Amin Sheikh. In response, FIR No. 94/2024 was registered at Police Station Litter under relevant sections of law and investigation was launched immediately to apprehend the culprits.

He said, through professional and prompt efforts, the accused persons were identified as Javid Ahmad Mir son of Bashir Ahmad Mir and Shamim Ahmad Mir son of Gh Ahmad Mir, both residents of Petipora. Within 24 hours of the incident, both the suspected persons were arrested.

Police remains committed to uphold law and order, instilling confidence among employees, and ensuring a safe and peaceful environment for the community, he said.

The CM assured the delegation that the government is committed to resolving the matter and sought six months to implement a solution.

However, the protestors emphasized the urgency of the issue, demanding that the matter be addressed within three months instead.Earlier, students, joined by Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah, staged protests in the city, raising slogans and urging immediate government action on the reservation issue.
