AAP Protest in Srinagar

please write title and 18 words meta for this article ”Police on Thursday foiled a protest march of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against the detention of its Doda MLA Mehraj Malik by not allowing the party members, including Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, to move out of the Circuit House here.

Singh, along with other AAP members arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday and was scheduled to address a press conference and hold a sit-in protest at the Press Enclave here. The AAP members were staying at the Circuit House in Sonwar area of the city. However, a posse of police was deployed outside the Circuit House and its gates were closed.

When Singh and other members of the party tried to move out of the Circuit House, the police did not allow them.

In a video message, Singh described the police action as “dictatorship”.

“Raising our voice in a democracy is our constitutional and democratic right. Today, we were holding protest against the arrest of Mehraj Malik and there was a press conference also. But, the height of dictatorship is that there is a huge deployment of police and we are not being allowed to move outside,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.

He said the police was not “even ready to tell us the reason of stopping us”.

“This is dictatorship as the administration is not even ready to tell us the reasons,” he added.

Referring to the party’s scheduled press conference and the protest programme, the AAP leader asked whether protesting or holding a press conference was a crime in a democracy?

“Is it a crime in a democracy to raise voice against illegal arrest? The height of dictatorship is that they are not ready to tell even a Rajya Sabha member the reason for stopping us,” he added.

Malik, who won the Doda seat in the 2024 assembly elections by over 4,500 votes, was detained on Monday under the PSA for allegedly disturbing public order, officials said. He was subsequently lodged in the Kathua district jail.

This is the first time a sitting MLA in Jammu and Kashmir has been taken into custody under the stringent law, which allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases.

Srinagar-Jammu Highway to Reopen for Light Vehicles After Weeks of Closure

Srinagar Highway

The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, closed for several weeks due to landslides, is expected to reopen for light motor vehicles (LMVs) from Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

A top official told the Kashmir News Service (KNS), that the Inspector General of Traffic is personally overseeing the restoration and clearance operations on the highway to ensure smooth and safe reopening. He stated that the resumption of vehicular movement will depend on favorable weather conditions and the completion of debris removal and road repairs along affected stretches.

During the closure, traffic between Jammu and Srinagar has been diverted to alternative routes, including the Mughal Road, causing delays and congestion.Officials said that once the highway reopens, LMVs will be allowed to ply from both sides, and arrangements are being made to regulate traffic and avoid bottlenecks.

The highway serves as a vital link between Jammu and Kashmir, and its reopening is expected to ease transportation of passengers, goods, and essential supplies.(KNS).

Shamas Din Malik Father of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik Condemn His Detention Under PSA in J&K

Shamas Din Malik

Shamas Din Malik, father of detained Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Doda, Mehraj Malik, said on Tuesday that his son was wrongly charged under the Public Safety Act (PSA), mentioning that the court will decide the legality of his arrest.

Malik, representing Doda assembly constituency, was booked under provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act 1978 (PSA) on Monday on grounds of his activities being prejudicial to the maintenance of public order.

Preventive detention under the PSA was found necessary in the interest of maintaining public order and safeguarding law and order in the region.

“The court will decide now…There was a fight with DC sahib (Deputy Commissioner of Doda)…He has been wrongly charged under PSA,” Shamas Din Malik told ANI.

Earlier today, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the detention of Mehraj Malik under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), saying that the MLA’s detention affects the trust of people in democracy.

Referring to the Hazratbal Shrine row, Abdullah complained that only innocents were being “harassed” while there was no action against those who played with their religious sentiments.

“I am not able to understand what he did to get detained under such a strict law like the PSA? Was there any incident of stone-pelting? On the contrary, there is no action against those who played with our religious sentiments and spoiled the atmosphere at the Hazratbal Shrine. Only innocents are being harassed. But no action is being taken against those who hurt our religious sentiments. Booking the MLA under PSA will affect people’s trust in Jamhuriyat (democracy),” Abdullah told reporters here.

AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal strongly reacted to the arrest, questioning the rationale behind the same, further stating that it was an attack on democracy.

“Is demanding a hospital for the people your area such a grave crime that an elected MLA has to be thrown jail for it Mehraaj Malik is the lion of the Aam Aadmi Party. He will always remain the voice of the people, fighting for their rights. Jail, threats, and conspiracies… none of these can ever scare any soldier of AAP,” the post read.

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed Para termed the arrest a “direct assault on democracy,” while calling out the endorsement of PSA against an elected MLA by the Assembly Secretariat.

Further in his post, Para demanded the protection of the democratic sanctity of elected representatives.

“Shameful surrender. Assembly Secretariat endorsing PSA against an elected MLA is a direct assault on democracy. J&K CM Omar Abdullah must act, don’t allow the institution of MLA, the last agency of the people, to be silenced. Today it’s Mehraj, tomorrow it could be you,” the post read. (ANI)

J&K AAP Chief and MLA Mehraj Malik Detained Under PSA in Doda

MLA Mehraj Malik

Jammu and Kashmir AAP chief and MLA Mehraj Malik was on Monday detained under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) in Doda district, officials said. This is for the first time that a sitting MLA has been detained under the PSA, an administrative law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases.

Earlier, a case was registered against Malik after he was allegedly seen removing medical equipment and life-saving drugs from a government-run Ayushman Arogya Mandir/Health and Wellness Centre at Kencha village in Doda district.

The incident was live-streamed on social media, reported Tribune newspaper.

Quoting an official statement from the district health authorities, it said the wellness centre in Kencha village, Thathri block, has been operating out of a rented two-room private building for over five years. Nearly two years ago, one of the rooms had sunk and sustained structural damage, prompting repeated safety concerns from residents.

Following inspections, the Block Medical Officer, Thathri, took up the matter with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Doda, to relocate the facility. Several committees were formed to assess alternative sites, and after due process, a building owned by one Abdul Rashid was approved. However, Malik opposed the decision, accusing the administration of corruption and favouritism, and instead supported another proposal from Ghulam Ali Malik, which was rejected for failing to meet the required criteria.

The statement alleged that the MLA, accompanied by others, forcibly removed equipment and medicines, disrupting emergency services and affecting the distribution of drugs to patients.

An FIR has been registered at Gandoh Police Station under Sections 221, 329(3), 351(2), 305(e), and 191(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against those involved, including the MLA.

In response, Mehraj Malik issued a statement on social media, saying he had already submitted a written request to the CMO, Doda, for relocating the centre in line with public demand and to a location he claimed was more suitable. He further alleged that the Deputy Commissioner was attempting to “favour the mafia” and used harsh words against the official in his remarks.

Police cited as many as 18 FIRs and multiple public complaints against Malik, accusing him of abusing officials, obstructing relief and development works, and instigating youth in Doda district. Authorities said the detention was necessary to maintain public order, and hinted that more PSA detentions could follow in the coming days, reported news agency KDC.

In the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir elections, Malik defeated his nearest rival from the BJP in Doda constituency by a margin of over 4,538 votes and registered the first win for his party in the Union territory.

He won the District Development Council elections from Kahara constituency of Doda on December 24, 2020. He resigned from the post after winning the assembly elections in October last year.

Omar Abdullah: Jammu-Srinagar Highway Faces 20–25 Days Restoration After Heavy Rains, Landslides

Omar Abdullah: Jammu-Srinagar

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has suffered extensive damages at multiple locations due to incessant heavy rainfall over the past few days, and full restoration may take up to 20–25 days.

Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said that the government has already engaged with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the construction company and district administrations concerned to expedite repair work.

“The situation is being assessed. The highway has suffered damages at several points due to landslides. It will take around 20 to 25 days for complete restoration. However, we have prepared an alternate route where double-side traffic is being managed for now,” Omar Abdullah said.

He added that areas around Udhampur have been badly affected by the rains, and once restoration there is completed, stranded traffic will be allowed to move.

On a query about the cloudburst in Rajgarh, the Chief Minister said he was informed by the local MLA about the incident and immediate relief was announced. “DC and SP reached the spot, and necessary arrangements were also made by the Red Cross. We will do whatever more is needed,” he said.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, considered the lifeline of Kashmir, has remained closed for the past two days due to continuous landslides and sinking of road stretches, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. Officials said restoration work is being carried out on war footing, though fresh shooting stones are slowing down the process.

Kashmir Fruit Growers Face Heavy Losses as Highway Closure Disrupts Transport

Jammu-Srinagar Highway

Kashmir’s fruit growers are facing mounting financial losses after the closure of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH-44) for four days left hundreds of fruit-laden trucks stranded during the peak harvest season.

Trucks Stranded, Crores at Risk

From August 26, heavy rains, landslides, and road damage blocked the region’s primary all-weather trade route, halting the movement of 700–800 trucks carrying early-season fruit varieties such as Bagogosha pears, Galamast apples, and Red Ghala apples. Each truckload is valued at ₹5–9 lakh, with losses estimated in crores due to the short shelf life of the produce.

Growers like Muhammad Maqbool of Shopian voiced fears that crops may rot if traffic disruptions persist.

Sopore Mandi Sounds Alarm

According to Fayaz Ahmad Malik, President of Sopore Fruit Mandi—Asia’s second-largest wholesale fruit market—300–400 trucks were stuck at different points, threatening the livelihoods of lakhs of people tied to the fruit economy.

The crisis has been worsened by a bumper crop from Himachal Pradesh, which has driven down prices in external markets, further squeezing Kashmir’s growers.

Alternative Routes Fall Short

The Mughal Road, considered an alternative, only accommodates smaller six-tyre trucks. Larger 10- and 16-tyre vehicles, needed for bulk transport to major markets beyond Delhi, remain barred.

On August 30, the highway reopened for stranded vehicles, permitting regulated movement of trucks. Yet, Bashir Ahmad Basheer, Chairman of the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers-cum-Dealers Union, warned that partial restoration would not be enough. “Full-scale traffic must resume to avoid further devastation,” he stressed.

Calls for Government Intervention

Fruit growers have urged the government to:

  • Prioritize fruit trucks on NH-44.
  • Permit larger trucks round-the-clock via the Mughal Road.
  • Expedite long-term alternatives for transport reliability.

Hope in Rail Cargo Service

Relief may come with the launch of the Railway Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) from Budgam to New Delhi, scheduled for late September 2025. Growers believe the service will provide faster, more dependable transport, reducing dependence on the vulnerable highway.
