Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi Announces Resignation from NC and Lok Sabha, Calls for Youth-Led Political Platform
By : Sheikh Mohammad Isa
Budgam: Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Tuesday announced his decision to quit the ruling Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) and resign from his Lok Sabha seat while addressing a massive public gathering at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam.
The announcement came during a gathering organised on the death anniversary of his father, late Aga Syed Mehdi, which witnessed the participation of thousands of supporters and political workers from different parts of Kashmir.
Addressing the gathering, Ruhullah strongly criticised the National Conference leadership, accusing the party of betraying the public mandate and failing to fulfil its electoral promises.
He said his differences with the party were based on principles and political commitments, particularly the restoration of Article 370, protection of constitutional rights, reservation issues and the release of prisoners.
Ruhullah made it clear that his decision was not motivated by personal grievances or disappointment over being denied any position within the party.
Instead, he said he could not compromise on the issues on which the National Conference had sought people’s support during the elections.
Ruhullah Rules Out Politics of Personal Positions
Explaining his decision, the Srinagar MP said his objective was not simply to leave one political party and join another.
He said he wanted to bring together honest, sincere and committed young people from Jammu and Kashmir who understand the difficulties faced by their homeland and communities.
Ruhullah stressed the need to create a new political platform based on honesty, commitment and public welfare rather than personal ambitions.
Appeals to Parents to Encourage Youth
During his address, Ruhullah also appealed to parents to encourage their children to come forward and contribute towards bringing positive changes in society.
He said young people raised through their parents’ hard work and honest efforts should take responsibility for the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
He expressed his desire to build a platform of dedicated young people who would work for the welfare of society and address the political and social concerns of the region.
Srinagar Lok Sabha Seat to Become Vacant After Formal Acceptance
Ruhullah’s announcement marks a significant development in Jammu and Kashmir politics, particularly given his position as the elected MP from Srinagar.
However, his parliamentary seat will become officially vacant only after the Lok Sabha Speaker accepts his formal resignation.
Any by-election to the Srinagar parliamentary constituency will subsequently be conducted in accordance with the applicable legal provisions.
His announcement has raised fresh questions about the future political direction of Jammu and Kashmir and the possibility of a new youth-led political platform emerging in the region.
