The opposition accused Kumar of favouring the ruling BJP and failing to protect the fairness and transparency of India’s electoral system. The BJP strongly criticised the move, describing it as political drama and accusing Rahul Gandhi of attempting to run a parallel parliament.

INDIA Bloc Holds Mock Parliament Against Election Commissioner

The symbolic proceedings were held at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and were chaired by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.

Several senior opposition leaders participated in the event, expressing serious concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission of India.

While presenting the resolution, Kharge levelled six major allegations against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, claiming that his actions had weakened democratic institutions and electoral transparency.

The six allegations included:

  1. Alleged Election Manipulation: The opposition accused the CEC of working with the ruling party to influence election results in national and state elections.
  2. Removal of Voters’ Names: Opposition leaders alleged that around 13.2 crore voters had been removed from electoral rolls without proper justification.
  3. Changes to Voter Registration Rules: They questioned changes relating to Form 6, which is used for registering new voters.
  4. Centralised Electoral Data: The opposition raised concerns over the use of platforms such as ERONET and ECINET, alleging that the systems lacked sufficient transparency.
  5. Exclusion of Other Election Commissioners: Kharge accused the CEC of sidelining other Election Commissioners in important decisions.
  6. Alleged Political Influence: The opposition claimed that the CEC was acting under the influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

These allegations were presented by the opposition as part of its case against the Election Commission. They have not been established as findings of wrongdoing.

Kharge also criticised the legal protections available to election commissioners under the 2023 law, arguing that they could weaken accountability.

Rahul Gandhi Warns Government of Future Accountability

Addressing opposition leaders, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said the opposition had been forced to organise a mock parliament because it believed that its concerns were not receiving proper attention in the official parliamentary system.

He accused the government of weakening democratic institutions and raised concerns about the alleged misuse of central investigative agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED).

“You can continue to rig elections. You can continue to allow the abuse of the CBI and ED. We guarantee you, this is temporary. Youngsters of India will not forgive you,” Gandhi said.

He also maintained that the opposition had evidence to support its allegations and promised to continue the campaign for accountability.

The INDIA bloc indicated that it would intensify its protest through a major public march in New Delhi.

BJP Calls Mock Parliament Political Drama

The BJP responded strongly to the opposition’s move, rejecting its allegations against the Election Commission and accusing the INDIA bloc of undermining constitutional institutions.

Senior BJP leader Sambit Patra mocked Rahul Gandhi, saying that he appeared to be running a parliament of his own choice because of the opposition’s repeated electoral defeats.

Patra also sarcastically suggested that the INDIA bloc should make Rahul Gandhi its mock Prime Minister for life.

The BJP maintained that the opposition was targeting the Election Commission because it was unhappy with electoral outcomes.

Political Tensions Continue

The confrontation has added another chapter to the growing political dispute between the BJP and the INDIA bloc over the functioning of India’s electoral institutions.

While the opposition is demanding greater transparency and accountability from the Election Commission, the BJP has rejected its allegations and defended the constitutional body.

The political battle is expected to continue as opposition parties seek to take their campaign to the public and demand answers from the Election Commission.
