Commemorating Rehman Rahi: A Tribute to the Legacy of a Pioneering Kashmiri Poet, Translator, and Critic
Srinagar, January 10: The commemoration ceremony for the first death anniversary of Kashmiri poet, translator, and critic Rehamn Rahi took place today in the central hall of SCERT-KD, organized by the Department of Education in Languages under the inspiring leadership of Director SCERT-JK, Prof. Dr. Pariksht Singh Manhas.
During the significant session, distinguished educationists, poets, critics, and SCERT-JK officers paid heartfelt tributes to Rehman Rahi for his remarkable contributions to enriching the cultural essence, poetry, and literary criticism in the Kashmiri language. The speakers reflected on Rahi’s role as a prominent poet of Kashmiri, highlighting his groundbreaking contributions to the promotion of Kashmiryat, peace, and brotherhood. In 2004, Rahi was honored with the prestigious “Gyan Peeth” award, the highest literary accolade in the country.
At the event, Senior Academic Officer (Central Office) Riyaz Ahmed Dar, Academic Officer (Provincial Office Kashmir) Sheikh Gulzar Ahmad, and Syed Hamid Bukhari shared insights into Rehman Rahi’s poetry and art. The program host, Senior Academic Officer (Department of Education in Languages) I/C Urdu and Kashmiri, Shabir Hussain Shabir, shed light on Rahi’s literary journey, academic career, and distinctive style, noting that Rahi has achieved a status in Kashmiri comparable to the legendary Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib in Urdu.
Dr. Sajjad Ahmed Mir presided over the program, commending the innovative steps taken by Shabir Hussain Shabir in recalling the contributions of local talents across various domains. Dr. Mir expressed hope that such initiatives would be recognized as best practices, inviting individuals from diverse backgrounds to SCERT to share their impactful experiences and contributions, thereby transferring enriched knowledge to younger generations. The program’s proceedings were skillfully conducted by Senior Academic Officer Gulzar Ahmad Dar in his unique style.
