Kathua Police Bust Three Terrorist Hideouts in Billawar After Overnight Gunfight

The Kathua Police, along with other security forces, busted three terrorist hideouts in the Billawar area of Kathua, officials said on Friday.

Police said they received reliable intelligence on January 7 about the movement of anti-national elements in the forest areas of Kamaad Nallah, Kalaban, and Dhanu Parole in Billawar. During the operation, unknown terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on the security forces, triggering an exchange of gunfire. Officials said the firing continued throughout the night.

During searches, security forces detected a terrorist hideout and recovered several items, including two empty cartridges of an M4 rifle, a plastic box containing desi ghee, a polythene packet of almonds, gloves, a cap, a blanket, a tarpaulin sheet, a small pouch, and a polythene bag.

The operation continued, and on January 16, 2026, joint teams busted two more terrorist hideouts in the Kalikhad and Kalaban areas of Billawar. From these hideouts, security forces recovered items such as a cooking gas cylinder, cooking oil, charger wire, gloves, cooking and eating utensils, an empty oil gallon, large plastic bags, a torch, blankets, containers, wrappers of food items, and other miscellaneous material.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kathua Mohita Sharma said that the search operation is still ongoing and assured that the police remain fully committed to maintaining peace and security in the district.

Officials said security forces are continuing area domination and searches to prevent any further terrorist activity in the region.
