University of Kashmir Announces Winter Break From January 10 to February 22, 2026

The University of Kashmir on Friday officially announced its winter break for the current academic year, bringing relief to students across its campuses.

Teaching Departments to Remain Closed

The order states that all teaching departments of the main campus and off-site campuses will observe the winter vacation during this period.

“It is for the information of all concerned that the teaching departments of the main and off-site campuses shall observe winter vacations with effect from January 10, 2026, to February 22, 2026,” the order reads.


Offices and Exams to Continue as Scheduled

Despite the teaching break, the university has clarified that all departmental and campus offices will remain functional.

Heads of departments, Directors, and Coordinators have been instructed to ensure that:

  • Offices function as usual
  • Examinations, if scheduled, are conducted on time
  • Other academic and administrative activities continue without disruption

This means students may still be required to appear for exams or complete formalities during the vacation period if notified.


In Line With Kashmir’s Winter Vacation Pattern

The university’s decision aligns with the phased winter vacation system currently followed across the Kashmir Valley.

For the 2025–2026 academic session:

  • Students from pre-primary to Class 8 began winter holidays on December 1, 2025, lasting until February 28, 2026
  • Students of Classes 9 to 12 started their break on December 11, 2025, which will end on February 22, 2026

With severe cold conditions prevailing across Kashmir, the winter break is expected to provide comfort to students while ensuring that essential academic and administrative work continues smoothly.

Students have been advised to stay updated with official university notifications regarding exams or other academic requirements during the vacation period.

University of Kashmir Suspends Assistant Professor After FIR Over Defamatory Social Media Content

In the latest development, an Assistant Professor of the University of Kashmir (KU) has been put under suspension in connection with the registration of an FIR at Police Station Nigeen, Hazratbal.As per the official order issued by the Deputy Registrar (Administration), KU, Altaf Ahmad Ganie has been placed under suspension with immediate effect.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

“Pending inquiry, Altaf Ahmad Ganie, Assistant Professor, Department of Kashmiri, is hereby placed under suspension, with immediate effect, in terms of University statute 3.16 (2) read with Regulation 12(3) (IV),” reads the KU order.As per the order, the Assistant Professor will remain attached to the office of the Dean Research “during the period of suspension.”

The Assistant Professor was suspended by the varsity administration for circulating a defamatory message to malign the image of the university official and the faculty member as well.

Following the circulation of the defamatory message, the KU faculty member registered a formal complaint at Police Station Nigeen against Assistant Professor of the Department of Kashmiri, Shafqat Altaf.

“As reported by SDPO Zakura, on December 9, 2025, Police Station Nigeen received an application through electronic mode submitted by a female faculty member (name withheld) wherein the applicant has stated that alleged accused persons Shafqat Altaf (Assistant Professor, Department of Kashmiri, KU) and Farooq Ahmad Malik (Assistant Professor, Higher Education Department, Government Degree College, Anantnag) have circulated false, defamatory, and obscene content about her on various social media platforms,” reads an official communication issued by Superintendent of Police (SP) Hazratbal, addressed to Chief Proctor of KU.

It reads that the material was allegedly shared intentionally with the aim of “damaging her reputation and outraging her modesty as a woman. As a result of this, she has been feeling threatened and intimidated.”

On this basis, the official communication reads that case FIR No 108/2025 U/S 79, 351(2), 356(2) of BNS, read with 67 IT Act was registered at Police Station Nigeen.

“A copy of the FIR in the instant matter is herewith enclosed for information and further course of action at your end,” the official communication reads.

Following the registration of FIR, the Assistant Professor of the Department of Kashmiri at KU has been put under suspension.

Meanwhile, the KU faculty has appreciated the J&K Police and the KU administration for their prompt action in this case.

“Police have taken prompt action, and the varsity administration has also initiated action which is in the interest of the university,” a KU official said.

The KU official said that the KU Vice Chancellor has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against misconduct and actions aimed at maligning the image of the university.

“She has already warned all university staff to refrain from any conduct that is in contravention of the rules and regulations of the varsity,” the KU official said.

The official said that with reference to the present case, the VC has ensured that the dignity of female employees remains the primary concern of the varsity.

CJI Gavai Calls Kashmir a Paradise, Urges University of Kashmir to Harness Alumni Power for Youth Development

Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai on Sunday expressed faith that the University of Kashmir would produce students who will contribute to the development of the Union territory and the nation.

Addressing the ‘Mega Alumni Meet 2025’ of the University of Kashmir here, the CJI also urged the varsity to make use of its rich alumni to benefit the younger generation. “I appeal to the university and the faculty to make use of the good alumni for young generations. They can benefit from their rich experience and get a good roadmap for the future,” he said.

CJI Gavai said he has full faith and full belief that the University of Kashmir will produce many more students who will actually participate and contribute to the development of India as a nation and to the development of Kashmir as a region.

Describing Kashmir as a truly paradise in the world, Gavai said “we have come here in Jannat (heaven)”.

“Kashmir is known for its confluence of civilisation… its beauty, handicrafts, pashmina shawls and cuisine. It has deeply enriched India’s intellectual and cultural discourse. Kashmir has produced voices that resonate far beyond it its values,” the CJI said.

CJI Gavai said the university has produced a variety of talents from various walks of life who have contributed to law and judiciary, to politics, and to medical science.

Earlier, the CJI felicitated the university’s alumni, including former chief minister of the erstwhile state of J-K Ghulam Nabi Azad.

“I was particularly happy to felicitate Ghulam Nabi Azad who has represented my neighbouring district in Vidarbha. Not only that, he has been a very good friend of my father and both of them have worked together in Rajya Sabha and also in Maharashtra politics.

“I was also happy to felicitate (Lok Sabha MP) Mian Altaf. We also felicitated the other alumin for their valuable contribution,” he said.

Apart from the CJI, the event was also attended by seven Supreme Court judges, Union Minster Kiren Rijiju, chief justice of the High Court of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh, J-K LG Manoj Sinha, and CM Omar Abdullah.

University of Kashmir to Resume Classes from May 14, Special Allowance for Border and Outstation Students

The University of Kashmir on Monday has announced that regular classwork across all its campuses will resume on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, bringing an end to the recent academic suspension.

In an official statement issued on Monday, university authorities clarified that while most students are expected to return to classes starting Wednesday, students residing in border areas of Jammu & Kashmir and those coming from outside the Union Territory will be granted additional time. They may rejoin from Monday, May 19, 2025, to accommodate travel or safety concerns.

The university’s decision aims to ensure a smooth and inclusive return to academic activity for all students.

The University of Kashmir has postponed all its examinations scheduled up to and including May 10.“It is hereby notified that all examinations of the University of Kashmir scheduled to be held upto and including 10.05.2025 stand postponed,” reads an order.

To emphasize the role of women in shaping a developed nation, the Centre for Women’s Studies & Research (CWSR) and the Institute of Home Science (IHS), University of Kashmir (KU), organized a one-day national seminar on ‘Viksit Bharat 2047: Strengthening Communities for a Developed Nation through Community Science’ as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.

The seminar focused on the crucial contributions of women in various fields, highlighting their role in promoting social, economic and scientific progress. Experts and participants deliberated on ways to empower communities by empowering women for a stronger and more inclusive future.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, in her presidential address, highlighted the university’s dedication to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

“Our university has always provided equal opportunities to women, with a significant number holding key administrative positions and excelling academically as well. This seminar reinforces the importance of women-led development for a prosperous future,” she said.

Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, acknowledged the indispensable role of women in nation-building.

“Women are the pillars of society, and their active participation is crucial for realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. Strengthening communities begins with empowering women,” he said.

Earlier, in her welcome address, Head, IHS KU, Prof. Humaira Azim, highlighted the vital contributions of women across diverse sectors, stressing the need for inclusive policies to support their growth and leadership.

The seminar featured three technical sessions on key themes including women’s health and well-being, economic empowerment and sustainable development. Resource persons from SKUAST-K, SKIMS, IUST, and GMC were also present. The event was attended by various heads of the departments, faculty members, scholars and students of the campus.

The proceedings of the event were conducted by Dr. Shazia Malik, faculty at CWSR KU while Dr. Roshan Ara, Coordinator CWSR KU presented a formal vote of thanks.

In a communique issued by KU, said, “In view of the inclement weather, all examinations of the University of Kashmir, scheduled to be held on December-30 are postponed.”It also said that the fresh dates for postponed papers will be notified separately.

University of Kashmir Announces Winter Vacations From January-01-2025 to February

The University of Kashmir (KU) Wednesday announced winter break for main and its satellite campuses January to February 23.

According to the news agency KNO KU’s Joint Registrar in a notification said, “The teaching departments of the university and its satellite campuses shall observe winter vacations from January-01-2025 to February-23-2025.”

“However, the Departmental offices shall function normally and the heads, directors and coordinators of the Department of satellite campuses and centers shall ensure that the examinations if any, and other activities are conducted as per schedule,” it reads.

It also said, “Further, remedial classes including offline or online mode shall be conducted by the departments to complete the remaining syllabus, if any, during the period of winter break.”—(KNO)
