Centre Deploys Three CRPF Battalions in Jammu to Replace Army Units in Counter-Terror Role

Three CRPF Battalions in Jammu

The Centre has ordered the deployment of three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) battalions in the Jammu region as part of a wider strategy to strengthen the counter-terror security grid, official sources confirmed on Thursday.

These units will gradually replace Rashtriya Rifles (Army) deployments in Udhampur and Kathua districts, with the Army being re-tasked for enhanced responsibilities along the Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

According to officials, each CRPF battalion consists of nearly 800 personnel. The redeployment reflects a new security blueprint under which counter-terror operations in the hinterland are to be increasingly handled by paramilitary forces under the Union Home Ministry, while the Army focuses on border defence.

The new arrangement follows an “improvement in the security situation” since the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019, sources said.

The CRPF battalions earmarked for this task comprise personnel with experience in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. They are being equipped with modern weapons, advanced communication systems, and armoured vehicles. The units will also utilise existing Army infrastructure and assets in the districts they take over.

Officials added that once the CRPF deployment in Udhampur and Kathua is completed, more areas, including parts of Kashmir Valley, may also be brought under CRPF control.

The move comes amid growing concerns about terrorist movement and attacks in the Jammu region’s forest belts. Notably, about 485 km of the 2,289 km-long India-Pakistan International Border (IB) runs through Jammu, in addition to portions of the LoC, making the region strategically vital.
