Tanvir Sadiq Blames PDP for Aligning with BJP, Says Alliance Caused Irreparable Damage to Jammu and Kashmir

Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq

Tanvir Sadiq, MLA Zadibal and Chief Spokesperson of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, on Thursday strongly criticised the Peoples Democratic Party for what he described as long-lasting damage to Jammu and Kashmir by aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party after the 2014 elections.

In a statement, Tanvir Sadiq said the PDP can never escape responsibility for supporting policies that, according to him, stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its political, economic and constitutional rights.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Speaking at a public gathering after laying the foundation stone of a Community Hall at Jogilanker in Rainawari, Tanvir said the people of Jammu and Kashmir would never forget what he called the PDP’s “political betrayal”. He said the party had campaigned against the BJP, warned people about its agenda, and then later joined hands with the same party.

Tanvir said the PDP-BJP alliance caused deep political damage and pushed the region into economic hardship. He said that by bringing the BJP into power, the PDP opened the door to a series of problems whose effects are still being felt today.

Referring to the major political changes of 2019, Tanvir said the loss of special status and statehood would not have happened if the PDP had not legitimised the BJP’s role in Jammu and Kashmir. He added that the foundation for those events was laid much earlier when the PDP chose power over principles.

Recalling the 2014 elections, Tanvir said both the National Conference and the PDP had promised voters that they would keep the BJP out of power. He said late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti had assured people that voting for the PDP was the only way to stop the BJP. However, he said those promises were broken immediately after the elections.

Quoting a proverb, Tanvir said, “Lamhon ne khata ki thi, sadiyon ne saza payi,” meaning a mistake made in moments led to punishment lasting generations.

He further accused the PDP-BJP government of weakening Jammu and Kashmir even before 2019 by imposing policies such as GST and SARFAESI. He said these decisions hollowed the region from within and added that the PDP has never apologised for its actions.

Reaffirming his party’s stand, Tanvir said the National Conference always chose principles over power. He said the party refused to compromise its values and would never trade the dignity of the people for political benefit.

Tanvir also accused the PDP, Apni Party, Peoples Conference, and some independent candidates of indirectly helping the BJP by targeting only the National Conference. He said none of them had the courage to directly challenge the BJP.

Earlier, Tanvir laid the foundation stone of the long-pending Community Hall at Jogilanker, Rainawari. He said the project would provide much-needed space for social, cultural and community activities in an area facing a shortage of public facilities.

“A peaceful protest in a democracy is our democratic right. Every citizen should be given this right. What happened yesterday was not right,” he said.

On Reservation Policy

Commenting on the reservation policy, Sadiq said the government has followed the same steps that were promised in the party’s election manifesto.

He explained that a committee worked on the issue for six months and prepared a detailed report. After that, the Cabinet took legal advice, and the report was then sent to the Lok Bhawan for final approval.

“If there had been any change, we would have clearly informed the students. There is no change. We are fulfilling the promise we made to the students,” he added.

On Recruitment Process

On government recruitments, Sadiq said job posts will continue to be advertised. However, he clarified that the government wants the reservation decision to be formally approved first before moving ahead.

He said this approach is meant to ensure clarity and fairness for all candidates.

Tanvir calls for Recalibration of Proposed GST on Kashmiri Handicraft Products

Tanvir Sadiq

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Sunday expressed concern regarding the proposed increase in Goods and Services Tax (GST) on traditional Kashmiri products, saying the move has raised alarm within the textile and apparel industry in Kashmir.

Calling on the Government of India to reconsider its GST strategy in order to safeguard the industry and the livelihoods it sustains, Party Chief Spokesperson and MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq emphasized that these products serve as the backbone of Kashmir’s economy and cultural heritage.

“The increase in GST rates will place a heavy burden on local artisans and traders, jeopardizing their livelihoods and reducing the attractiveness of Kashmiri products in the global market.it is alarming to propose higher taxes during a period of economic instability characterized by inflation and stagnant growth,” he said.

Tanvir criticised the proposed hike, stating that it reflects a lack of understanding of Kashmir’s economic realities. He emphasised the importance of balancing revenue needs with social equity for the workforce, warning of severe consequences if this balance is not maintained.(KNS).
