“Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty give her family the strength to bear this loss,” PM Modi said.

Khaleda Zia died early Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital. According to a statement shared by the BNP on Facebook, she passed away at around 6:00am local time, shortly after the Fajr prayer.

The BNP said, “We pray for the eternal peace of her soul and ask everyone to pray for her departed soul.”

She had been admitted to the hospital on November 23 after suffering from a lung infection. For many years, the former prime minister had been battling several serious health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis and kidney complications. Earlier this month, she was taken to London for advanced medical treatment.

On Tuesday morning, a large crowd gathered outside the hospital as her son, BNP leader and acting chairman Tarique Rahman, arrived to pay his respects to his late mother.

Recalling her political legacy, Prime Minister Modi said Khaleda Zia would always be remembered as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He noted that she made important contributions to the country’s development and played a role in strengthening India-Bangladesh relations.

PM Modi also recalled his meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015 and said her vision and legacy would continue to guide the partnership between the two countries.

“Her contributions to Bangladesh and to India-Bangladesh relations will always be remembered. May her soul rest in peace,” he added.
