Heavy Rains Trigger Landslides in Rajouri and Reasi; 3 Dead, Schools Shut, Houses Damaged

Landslides in Rajouri

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days in the Kalakote division of Rajouri district has triggered multiple landslides, resulting in significant property damage, road blockades, and the closure of schools. At least 25 houses have been damaged so far, and emergency services are working around the clock to manage the unfolding crisis.

Assistant Development Commissioner (ADC) Kalakote, Tanveer Hussain Khan, confirmed the damage and said that control rooms have been set up to assist affected residents.

“People have suffered heavy losses. As this is a hilly area, landslides have caused severe damage. We have evacuated residents to rehabilitation centres in Kalakote. Schools remain shut for the second consecutive day,” he said.

Teams from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are actively working to clear debris and repair roads, many of which remain blocked due to landslides. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid traveling through landslide-prone zones.

A local shopkeeper from Kalakote appealed for help:

“After the landslide, debris fell on many shops. Several poor families have lost everything. The government must announce compensation for the victims,” he said.

Reasi Tragedy: Two Labourers Killed in Landslide

Meanwhile, a deadly landslide struck early Wednesday morning in Badora under the Mahore sub-division of Reasi district, killing two labourers and injuring another.

According to Jammu and Kashmir Police, the incident occurred around 2 am, when a sudden landslide buried a tent at a construction site related to the Badora Shiva Cave pilgrimage.

The victims were identified as:

  • Ravi Kumar (23), son of Parshotam Kumar, resident of Channi, Udhampur
  • Rashpal Singh (26), son of Soba Ram, resident of Tuli Kalaban, Reasi

The injured labourer was rushed to Mahore Hospital and is currently under treatment.

Earlier Incident in Poonch: 5-Year-Old Killed in School Landslide

This is the third landslide-related fatality in recent days. On July 21, a landslide in Bainch village of Poonch district struck a local school, resulting in the death of a 5-year-old student and injuring four other children and a teacher.

Medical Officer Dr Ishfaq Ahmad, speaking to ANI, confirmed:

“One child was brought in dead, four others had minor injuries and are under observation. The teacher was also injured but is in stable condition.”

Relief and Rescue Efforts Underway

The administration in all affected areas has deployed rescue teams, medical staff, and disaster response units. Authorities are assessing damage for compensation and relief distribution, while rehabilitation centres have been set up to accommodate displaced families.

With more rain predicted in the coming days, the situation remains fragile. Locals are urged to remain alert and follow safety advisories issued by the Meteorological Department and district administrations.
