At least 7 people were killed and several others injured in two separate incidents of cloudburst and landslide in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, officials said on Sunday. Five people died after a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Jodh Ghati, while two others were killed in a landslide at Janglote during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The disasters also caused damage to National Highway-44, a railway track, and a local police station.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who represents Udhampur in Parliament, said the civilian administration, military, and paramilitary forces had swung into action to restore normalcy. He confirmed that the situation was being closely monitored and extended condolences to the bereaved families. The Indian Army also joined rescue operations, with Rising Star Corps reporting that its teams were rescuing families, providing food, and extending care to the affected people.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and directed officials to intensify relief and rescue measures in Kathua. His office noted that landslides in several parts of the district, including Jodh Khad and Juthana, claimed lives and left many injured. He conveyed condolences to the bereaved families, wished for the speedy recovery of the injured, and assured that all necessary assistance would be provided.
