Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, Dr Molvi Mohammad Umar Farooq, on Friday expressed concern over recent arrests in connection with decades-old cases, urging the state government to review the handling of such matters.
Speaking at the weekly Friday congregation at Jama Masjid Srinagar, the religious leader, as per the statement, said that the continued detention of individuals, some of whom have been disengaged from past activities for years, has caused anxiety among their families.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
He noted that thousands of Kashmiri prisoners are currently lodged in jails both within and outside Jammu and Kashmir, with some serving sentences for extended periods.
Highlighting humanitarian and legal aspects, Mirwaiz pointed out that detention outside the Union Territory can lead to delays in trial proceedings and restrict family access, raising concerns over the principles of fair treatment and timely justice.
He called for the transfer of detainees back to Jammu and Kashmir to facilitate quicker and more accessible legal processes. He also urged authorities to consider halting further arrests of individuals not associated with any form of violence for decades.(KNS).
