Kashmir Makes History: First Car Freight Train Unloads 116 Vehicles at Anantnag Railway Station

Car Freight Train

In a groundbreaking moment for Kashmir’s connectivity and commerce, the first automobile freight train rolled into Anantnag Railway Station today at 12:15 PM IST, unloading 116 Maruti Suzuki cars and marking a historic milestone in the region’s automotive and logistics sectors. The event, reported live by journalist Shadab Gilani, signifies a leap forward in integrating the Kashmir Valley with India’s national rail network, promising faster, greener, and more cost-effective vehicle deliveries.

The dedicated rake, dispatched from Maruti Suzuki’s Gati Shakti Terminal in Manesar, Haryana, traveled 850 km in approximately 45 hours, crossing the iconic Chenab Bridge—the world’s highest railway arch bridge—before arriving at Anantnag’s newly operational Goods Shed. The consignment included popular models such as the Brezza, Dzire, WagonR, and S-Presso, destined for dealerships across the Valley.

Revolutionizing Car Deliveries

“This is a game-changer for Kashmir’s automobile industry,” said a Northern Railway official at the unloading ceremony. “Previously, cars were driven from Jammu to Srinagar, risking wear and increasing costs. Now, they arrive factory-fresh by rail, saving time and money for dealers and buyers.” The rail transport cuts logistics costs by up to 30% and reduces road congestion on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.

A Boost for Regional Connectivity

The automobile rake is the latest success for the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a 272-km engineering marvel navigating the Himalayas’ rugged terrain. Since August, the line has facilitated freight like cement, army supplies, and Kashmiri apples. The Anantnag Goods Shed, now fully operational, is set to become a hub for regional trade.

Maruti Suzuki, which has transported over 5.18 lakh vehicles by rail nationwide, called the event a “landmark for sustainable logistics.” The service aligns with India’s push for eco-friendly transport, reducing emissions and easing pressure on highways, especially during Kashmir’s harsh winters.

What’s Next?

Railway officials confirmed plans to increase freight services, with more automobile rakes and goods trains scheduled in coming weeks. The development is expected to lower vehicle prices, boost sales, and support local industries. For residents, it’s a symbol of progress. “This isn’t just about cars—it’s about Kashmir’s connection to the world,” said local trader Bilal Ahmad on X.

As the Valley basks in the season’s first snowfall in Gulmarg’s upper reaches, reported earlier today, this rail milestone adds to the region’s growing momentum as a hub of tourism, trade, and innovation.
