In a move that’s set to make life a lot easier for locals and visitors alike, Northern Railway has officially announced the extension of the local train service from Banihal all the way to Katra. Starting this Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the service will bridge a crucial gap in the region’s rail network, offering a reliable alternative to the often-unpredictable mountain roads.

Whether you are a daily commuter, a student, or a pilgrim heading to the holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, this extension is a major win for connectivity between the Jammu and Kashmir divisions. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The New Train Schedule

To help you plan your journey, here are the official timings released by the Jammu Railway Division:

  • Departure from Banihal: The train will leave Banihal station at 10:10 am.
  • Arrival at Katra: It is scheduled to reach Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station at 1:00 pm.
  • Return Journey: On its way back, the train will depart from Katra at 1:45 pm, heading towards Banihal and eventually continuing to Budgam.

The train will feature a reserved coach, providing a more comfortable option for those who prefer to book their seats in advance.

Key Stops and Stations

One of the best things about this extension is that it won’t just skip through the mountains. The train is set to halt at all intermediate stations, making it a lifeline for people living in smaller towns along the route.

The confirmed halts include:

  • Khari
  • Sumber
  • Sangaldan
  • Sawalkote
  • Dugga
  • Bakkal
  • Kori
  • Reasi

Why This Matters

For a long time, travel between Banihal and Katra has been heavily dependent on the national highway, which can be prone to landslides and traffic jams. This rail link offers a weatherproof and time-efficient way to travel.

For tourists and pilgrims, it means a smoother transition from the Kashmir Valley to the spiritual hub of Katra. For the locals, it’s about better access to jobs, education, and healthcare across the two divisions.

As the region continues to see massive infrastructure upgrades, this extension is a small but significant step toward a fully integrated Jammu and Kashmir rail link.
