Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Wednesday inaugurated semiconductor design company ARM’s new office in Bengaluru, announcing that India will design the world’s most advanced 2-nanometer chips here.
“These chips, used in AI servers, drones and mobile phones, will be designed at ARM’s Bengaluru unit, marking a significant milestone in India’s semiconductor journey,” Vaishnaw said.
Highlighting rapid growth in the sector, the Minister noted that India’s electronics industry has expanded sixfold in the last 11 years and is now worth ₹11.5 lakh crore, with exports rising eightfold. He emphasized that electronics is emerging as a major export product for the country.
Vaishnaw said the government’s vision, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is to make India a global hub not only for semiconductor design and manufacturing but also for equipment and materials essential for chip production.
“The semiconductor industry is headed towards becoming a trillion-dollar sector. Our youth and engineers have a historic opportunity, with 278 institutes already engaged in chip design. Students have produced 28 chip designs across 25 institutes. We are moving from India Semiconductor Mission 1.0 to 2.0, focusing now on equipment and materials,” he added.
Earlier in the day, the Minister reviewed indigenous manufacturing of high-precision components for chip-making equipment, with Carborundum Universal Ltd (CUMI) showcasing critical materials.
