Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Friday adjourned the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly sine die.In his concluding remarks, the Speaker thanked the members of the House for their cooperation in making the session more productive and meaningful.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

He described the session as unprecedented, noting that most of the time was devoted to raising people’s issues.“It is heartening to see that all legislators tried to raise constituency specific concerns,” he said.He further said that efforts were made to make the system more accommodative and participatory.

He appreciated the cooperation extended by the Chief Secretary, various departments, including Information Department, Doordarshan, All India Radio and print and electronic media in conducting the session smoothly.

The Speaker said he tried to accommodate all members in the discussions in an objective manner.He further urged the members to continue working to meet the expectations of the people.

Veteran National Conference leader and seven-time MLA, Abdul Rahim Rather on Monday unanimously elected as Speaker of the first Assembly of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory.

As soon as House assembled at 10: 30 am, 78-year-old Rather, who has served as minister in cabinet’s of Sheikh Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, was elected as Speaker after Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Javaid Ahmad Dar moved a motion for choosing him for the coveted post.The motion was seconded by NC’s MLA Ramban, Arjun Singh Raju.

With opposition parties deciding against contesting the post, the pro-tem Speaker Mubarak Gul declared his election as the Speaker.

Soon after his election, Leader of House Omar Abdullah and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma escorted him to the Speaker’s chair—(KNO)
