Srinagar/Anantnag: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday welcomed the approval of a ₹100 crore Integrated Aqua Park Project in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, calling it a strong step towards boosting fisheries and economic development in Jammu and Kashmir.

The project was announced during the National Conference on Cold Water Fisheries, organised at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) by the Ministry of Fisheries Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

The project was formally sanctioned by Rajiv Ranjan Singh, who also released the Model Guidelines for the Development of Cold-Water Fisheries during the conference. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Boost for Fisheries Sector in Jammu and Kashmir

Speaking at the event, LG Manoj Sinha said the quick approval of the project reflects the Central Government’s commitment under the leadership of Narendra Modi to promote development and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir.

He said the Union Territory has huge potential in cold-water fisheries, with around 27,000 hectares of water resources suitable for aquaculture and fish farming.

Key Features of the Integrated Aqua Park

The ₹100 crore Integrated Aqua Park in Anantnag will focus on strengthening fisheries infrastructure and increasing fish production in the region.

Major components of the project include:

  • Modern cold storage and fish processing facilities
  • Improved packaging and branding systems
  • Development of aquaculture infrastructure
  • Promotion of sustainable fish farming practices

Officials said around 42 percent of the investment will be used for upgrading fisheries infrastructure.

One of Four National Cold-Water Projects

The Anantnag project is among four cold-water fisheries projects approved across India, with similar initiatives planned in Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland.

The project aims to increase fish production, improve supply chains, and create employment opportunities for fish farmers and local youth.

Support Under National Schemes

The initiative will also support programmes under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP).

These schemes aim to improve fisheries infrastructure, establish fish breed banks, and develop modern fish markets.

Awards and Scheme Benefits Distributed

During the conference, benefits under government schemes were also distributed to traditional and progressive fish farmers, fisheries cooperatives, and Kisan Credit Card beneficiaries.

Awards were also presented to the best Fisheries Farmer Producer Organisations (FFPOs) and fisheries startups from Jammu and Kashmir.

Economic Boost for Anantnag

Officials and local stakeholders believe the project will give a major boost to the rural economy of Anantnag, which is known for its trout farming potential in cold-water streams and mountain rivers.

The Integrated Aqua Park is expected to increase incomes for fish farmers, create jobs, and strengthen the fisheries sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
