Week-Long Power Crisis Hits Sallar, Aishmuqam and Pahalgam After Transformer Failure

Several areas of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district have been facing prolonged power outages for the last one week following the failure of a major transformer at the Gopalpora Grid Station in Mattan, officials said.

The breakdown of the 10 MVA transformer at the 33/11 KV Gopalpora Grid Station due to a serious internal technical fault has severely disrupted electricity supply across large parts of the district. The worst affected areas include Anantnag town, Tehsil Sallar, Tehsil Aishmuqam, Moverah, and the prominent tourism hub Pahalgam.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Residents said that erratic and extended power cuts over the past week have caused significant hardship, particularly during evening and night hours. The situation has also impacted businesses and tourist facilities in Pahalgam, where visitors continue to arrive despite unreliable electricity supply.

Officials from Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited confirmed that the transformer suffered extensive damage and requires replacement. Technical teams have been deployed, and efforts are underway to arrange a new transformer at the earliest.

In the meantime, engineers are attempting to provide partial relief by supplying electricity through alternate feeder lines wherever technically feasible. However, officials said such arrangements are limited and cannot fully meet the demand.

Authorities stated that complete restoration of normal power supply will be possible only after the damaged transformer is replaced and commissioned. KPDCL has appealed to consumers to remain patient, assuring that restoration work is being carried out on priority to resolve the week-long power crisis.
