JKPC Chief Sajad Lone Alleges ₹55 Crore for Kupwara Medical College Diverted to Udhampur

Kupwara, September 27, 2025 – Jammu Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC) president and Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone has accused the J&K government of diverting ₹55 crore, originally sanctioned for the Government Medical College (GMC) in Handwara, Kupwara district, to GMC Udhampur.

Speaking at a press conference in Kupwara, Lone called the move a “deliberate attempt to undermine Kashmir’s medical infrastructure.”

The money was part of a ₹325 crore package sanctioned by the Union Health Ministry in 2022 for establishing new medical colleges in Kupwara and Udhampur under a centrally sponsored scheme. However, with Handwara’s project facing delays, Lone alleged the funds were shifted to favor Jammu.

This is not the first time the Handwara GMC has triggered controversy. In March 2025, Lone had a heated exchange with National Conference MLAs in the J&K Assembly, who accused him of “snatching” the project from Kupwara town. Lone insisted he worked hard to secure the sanction despite opposition.

The allegation highlights persistent concerns over regional bias in fund allocation between Kashmir and Jammu. The J&K government has not yet issued an official response. Meanwhile, residents of Kupwara and Handwara anxiously await progress on the medical college, seen as vital for north Kashmir’s healthcare.
